" not a large budget"? Hmnn compared to what I may ask. The budget for series 1 was £5M each. The classic series budget might just cover the catering budget of modern who. That from a behind the scenes interview. Though i will say. I just watched Horn's of the nimon the other night. ( i have most of the 4th doctors stories on DVD. listening to the commentary of Llala Ward ( Romanna II). The story holds up. The acting does too. Vs little budget. It was 1980 and inflation had really shrunk the budget over just the one series Tom's penultimate one. The next and last episode was supposed to be Shada. With the industrial action ... Aka strikes. The story was never finished. Lost a good 3rd of the story. Now how much have they spent on the latter stories of modern who until it ended with Capaldi. Lots of dumb stories and uninteresting people. More money seems to hurt not help. You fall back on looking good instead of good storytelling.

Eccleston is the best Doctor of modern Doctor Who. No other actor who played the Doctor was able to portray him with such an acting ability as Eccleston. Even in the weaker episodes of series 1(I'm looking at you Aliens of London and World War Three), Eccleston's high level of acting carries the episode and in the good episodes, he makes them even better. Someone such as Matt Smith would not have been able to pull off the scene in Dalek where he first meets that dalek.
@thegreatpufferfish96384 жыл бұрын
I disagree, Matt pulled off a wonderful scene in "Vicotry of the Daleks", where you can feel all the hatred the Doctor has for the Daleks. What Nine has going for him is his presence imo. You can really fell it, when he said "Yes, me" in World War Three and just stared down the Slitheen
@biscuitsandbananas34334 жыл бұрын
@@thegreatpufferfish9638I consider Victory of the Daleks to be a strong contender to be one of the worst episodes of modern Doctor Who and Matt Smith's cringe-worthy acting plays a large part in that episode's failure.
@jpdicey789 Жыл бұрын
@@biscuitsandbananas3433 Almost as cringe as Tom Baker talking nonsense to himself in an intricate, complex serious way to attempt to sound both funny and deep at the same time lol the younger me would have completely agreed with you about Matt's performance in "Victory of the Daleks" as I thought Matt was just overall cheesy in his role and the whole "...I am the Doctor and you are the Daleks" monologue just sounded incredibly forced and a throw away line to end it on! The kick from the Doctor seemed uncharacteristic aswell, as you would expect the Doctor to be calmer and more measured in his approach since stopping the Daleks from whatever they were upto would seem like a higher priority than just losing his temper?! Logically you would think that considering how dangerous they are and his past experiences with them, that the Doctor after a few regenerations would opt for a more calculated approach! On the other hand though, his history with them sort of speaks for itself and already explains his dialogue and overreactions. Could the delivery have been better? Absolutely, but I'm not as critical of it now as I was then! Why? Because this incarnation of the Doctor has detached himself to the point where it's just business as usual! He's still hateful and angry towards the Daleks, but it is more surface level and it isn't as relevant as it was with 9 since he came right after the War Doctor! It's sort of meant to have a "hits different" feel to it! Unpopular opinion, but having rewatched these seasons even though I've grown to appreciate both Doctors a lot more (as I found 10's quirks and Tennant's over acting even more annoying back then) I still prefer the 11th Doctor to the 10th and having now watched the classic series appreciate both of them more than the 4th! I think from the classic series the 3rd and 6th Doctors are also highly underrated too! As for the 9th, had he had as much time as 10, based on his performance in the 1st season of New Who, he had the potential to possibly be the best Doctor of all of them! Bare in mind I haven't listened to any of Eccleston's Big Finish stuff yet and just haven't listened to the audio stuff in general.

I remembered the old Drs so when he burst onto the screen he was a breath of fresh air. You always understood that being The Doctor could be marvellous but now you finally saw him dealing with the centuries of hell it brought just being him. Everything he had seen over those lifetimes had actually affected him and the Time War was a massive blow on top of it all. That made him truely magnificent. David Tennant wouldn't have worked if he'd came first because we NEEDED that character development from Eccleston's gritty, hardened Doctor to add personality and progression to Tennant's Doctor. He was more important than a lot of people realise so thank you for this video acknowledging that.

The 10th Doctor is without a doubt the definitive Doctor of the NuWho era just like the 4th is for the original era; setting the tone and expectation for all that comes after it and being the standard by which future Doctors are measured. There's a reason why Eleven and Twelve wore suits (and why Thirteen just looks weird and should probably wear a suit too). But the 9th Doctor is my favorite. He is the bridge between the old and the new, a more subdued and serious character who gradually opens up over the course of Series 1, to help newcomers - like me, at the time! - really get to grasp what Doctor Who is all about before Ten and later Eleven get outrageously wacky with a lot of their stories. While Eccleston left because of his differences with the production people, it's honestly good in a way - Nine gets to introduce us to the show, the setting and lay out the basic backstory, have his gradual character arc, and then a satisfying resolution to it, ushering in the "real" beginning of the new era. It helps a lot that Eccleston's performance and the writers did such a great job of making the 9th Doctor feel ancient; even though we only got to see him for 1 series, you get the sense that this incarnation of The Doctor has been around for a very long time by Doctor Regeneration standards; he's worn out, he's tired, he's just getting on with his last few years before things catch up to him, and then he picks up Rose and begins to make that transition into a new life - and the new Regeneration is the capstone. I think it's honestly perfect.

@@user-cg9ng2mx8l Uh.. Sure, if you REALLY stretch your definition of "suit" for Five, Six and Seven, and ignore Three, Four and Eight altogether, then yes, "literally every Doctor" wore a suit. That is to say, the First and Second Doctors wore suits.

If you don't mind, I actually am in the process of writing a video essay on the 9th myself, showing how his portrayal actually helped me learn a lot in my life, and how a lot of people can genuinely relate to his Doctor, including myself. To take that one quote you mentioned, about a locked door. The quote of how every other doctor would do something like a puzzle solver, but the 9th would be the first one to use a bit more of common sense. I do wish for that to be in the video essay. Eccleston didn't deserve the crap he went through. He deserved treatment that was just as fantastic as he is.

Dalek and Heaven Sent are tied for my favourite episodes of the show. Dalek because it perfectly portrays how rage and vengeful The Doctor is deep down, the sight of his worst enemy sends him completely off the rails. And Heaven Sent because it is a perfectly executed allegory for grief. Showing just how truly humany wumany The Doctor is. Showing that he would rather spend 4 and a half billions years in pain than let go of his friends.

What I loved about the 9th was his connecting a very hands on, son of the soil kind of way of being with a higher being in ways very few can. He's got a labourer's competence and an intellectual mind. A supreme being capable of childlike wonder. And he manages this by mostly BEING. He gets one series in which to reboot an iconic series, build a profound relationship with his companion, establish himself as a new kind of battle scarred doctor who also values the wonder more juxtaposed with the darkness he knows is there. And he is so profound that you can extrapolate his character like this endlessly and be able to see it in the acting all the way through, because it is portrayed through behaviour which can be endlessly interpreted, without limiting it with too many defining words, unlike the recent trend of an episode being a script reading performance.

I am still trying to watch some of the earlier Doctors to catch up... and I missed a few of 10 apparently, but ?13? the "woke" Doctor almost destroyed my fandom completely. Hopefully, the BBC will drop "Chibner's" run, and find someone with a "STTOS" brain, touch base with the story writers from STTOS or Stargate, and rescue this staple of the BBC. Maybe reach out to the writers for The Orville, since Orville is now behind a pay-wall... I hope that Seth McFarlane feels some MAJOR PAIN for leaving his REAL Orville fans behind. McFarlane needs something to wake him up to his mistake. hopefully The Orville will make it into the torrents and TV sites, but I have been watching TV since 1965... It's weird, because he's probably my least fave Doctor of all of them (including the Classic Doctors). He just never resonated with me as the Doctor for whatever reason (he always came off like an actor pretending to be the Doctor and not the Doctor himself, in my view) and I never really enjoy rewatching his stories (and generally avoid them). In fact, had I not watched all of Classic Who and already been a fan coming into S1, I'm not sure I would've stayed watching the show, as I really find the episodes with him mostly pretty meh and kinda boring (with a few exceptions, like Moffat's 2-parter and 'Dalek'). So, anyway, all that to say I come to videos like this to try and suss out what I'm 'missing' with him, as no, he just really doesn't do it for me. At all.

It wasn’t until the end of Smith’s tenure going towards Capaldi where I had to re-evaluate who my Doctor was. Regardless, I think the casting was a good choice as he could have easily broke the series. While he’s no longer my Doctor for a long time he was. This pertains to new Who. I understand David Tennant's appeal, but I didn't like it. The 10th's purpose always seemed to be to draw a broader audience rather than to make the show better. I think that Eccleston and Smith were much better. I think Capaldi was better due to the contrast he had with Smith. I think Smith's Doctor would break down a door quicker than Capaldi could think.

There was a new generation of people watching the show who sidnt know anything about it. As much as i love 9, its good that the bandage was ripped off.

Anyone who says to skip 9th's season is a gatekeeping neckbeard who doesn't deserve to watch Doctor Who.

No.. it’s an impressionist. Even for people who don’t refuse to do Doctor who media after they leave they don’t tend to go into big finish Audios

Can you do videos on Classic who?

Potentially- Right now all of my focus is on my #New13 project, re-writing the Chibnall era of the show. If and when that's done, I might go back and break down what made Doctors 1-7 so great.
