GS, very true about the cluster munitions being controversial as they do not all 'explode.' Whilst in the Falklands in '82 I parked my 4 ton truck, got out, closed the door and looked down at where the front wheel had stopped. There it was, an unexploded cluster munition, one of our own, and it was a live one. Bomb disposal came over, removed and disposed of it. Lucky for me that day I didn't park in my usual spot next to our tent.

The convention against the use of CBU is meaningless. The nations that signed the treaty didn’t use them and the nations that had a lot of them didn't sign.
@GrowlingSidewinder26 күн бұрын
Exactly correct, seems to be the case with a lot of international treaties these days, all meaningless.
@valaran396826 күн бұрын
Yeah, it seems like all the countries that didn't sign are the ones that can realistically expected to end up in a conflict at some point. Kind of like that treaty that says everyone should share space resources equally that has literally only been signed by nations without space programs.
@dreaminknight26 күн бұрын
Same as mines or anti nuke proliferations..
@andersjjensen25 күн бұрын
Denmark had 155mm DPICM in inventory when we signed the treaty. The army didn't like it one bit, but politicians are politicians. The correct move always was to specify a 0.1% dud rate for submunitions. Ordinary shells have a dud rate specification of 1% (it's typically much lower than that) so it's not like those don't leave UXO behind.

It never ceases to amaze me the sheer volume of ordinance the Warthog can carry, with so many jokes circulating about it having "one engine, split in half."
@ThePrisoner88122 күн бұрын
It never ceases to amaze me that somebody in the upper echelons of the Pentagon thinks the F-35 can replace this beast. Yeah, the A-10 will have a tough time in high-threat environments...but you don't send it into those areas. You send it when the anti-air threat is lower but the GROUND THREAT is extreme.
@LessAiredvanU27 күн бұрын
The issue with CBU's that prompted many nations from banning them is that earlier generation munitions included "area denial" munitions that had delay fuses that went off later or upon further contact. These were capable of inflicting casualties in non combatants or friendlies. Modern sub munitions often do not include these types, but faulty fuses are still dangerous with the quantities dropped.
@chuckchuck626926 күн бұрын
Also, I believe newer cluster munitions (at least the ones from the US) have a built in detonation if they don't find a target. This assures a kid can't step on it months or years down the road.

@dsm375970325 күн бұрын
Depends. If the OBJ (objective) is occupied with a lot of infantry with significant anti-armor capabilities...the tanks get toasted. So alternatively, send in the infantry first to reduce the anti-armor threat and tanks come in second to provide support by fire (SBF) and eliminate hardened positions. Conversely, if the OBJ has a lot of armored vehicles and infantry then the threat of heavy losses to your APC's /MRAP's during infiltration or assault would probably call for stand off and ABF (attack by fire). Which is why we love the A-10.

I never really understood the cluster munition ban in the first place. They are allegedly dangerous because a goat herder, or livestock might step on one. Don't these things get fired at military targets exclusively? Why are people approaching bomb sites anyway? Isn't dying from exploring a bomb site just about equivelant to dying in a freak gasoline fight? (Zoolander reference =)

I'm not sure I understand how sometimes, 'defending' means dropping to the deck, tight turns, flares / chaffs and it looks risky. In this video, you 'defend' missiles by turning around calmly and yeeting countermeasures. The A-10 probably has a radar signature comparable to a blimp so how come missiles are evaded with so little effort required?
@valaran396826 күн бұрын
Because the short-range missiles being fired at it are mostly IR guided, and the A-10 has a very low IR signature.
