What's going on peeps! Today on our journey through the mesmerizing realm of theatrecore, we delve into the captivating musical odyssey of singer-songwriter Will Wood. Following our recent Tally Hall adventure, I was flooded with recommendations for acts similar to the band, and one name that stood out like a Disney supervillain was Will Wood. Now, I don't always cover every artist suggested, but I believe in giving each one a fair shot. So, when I hit play on his hit track "Give Me A Shovel, I’m Going In," I was unprepared for the sheer brilliance that unfolded before me. Trust me, folks, this is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. With hooks that'll reel you in and a composition that's both chaotic and thrilling, Will Wood crafts a sonic experience that left me utterly speechless. But enough about one song, let's dive deeper into the intriguing history and musical catalog of Will Wood himself that is anything but normal.
We got albums "Everything is a Lot", "SELF-iSH", "The Normal Album", and "In case I make it" being analyzed in whole!
UPDATE: had to cut a few personal bits about him from this video that were on the internet. I obviously didn't have any malicious intent but I got to respect his privacy as pointed out by fans.

27:00 yeah euthanasia was witten about his rat, bert. he had to put him to sleep and wrote the song about how he wished his death was more peaceful and because the experience changed how he viewed religion as a concept. he used to believe religion only really existed because people feared mortality and wanted to prolong their own lives, but after loosing bert he realized that maybe religion was more about loved ones that you don’t want to let go of. “now i know why they say that there’s a better place that waits beyond the grave. and i know it’s not true, there’s just no more you, but as long as there’s no proof then i choose to believe that you can still hear me after you’re put to sleep” truly a gorgeous and heart wrenching song

I thought it was about a mouse he found in his flat and his roommates and landlords told him to trap it, he brought a tomcat brand disposable mousetrap and placed it outside the hole. The lyrics about having to run away and a night without food because the mouse couldn't steal it. He talks abt it in litwtc, obviously not the most reliable source but it seems like a believable story

hmm no hate but this video kinda rubs me the wrong way. will has said that he doesn't like people talking about his personal life, especially his pre-strange thick stuff. and while i think your interpretations of his songs are interesting, i feel like some of it is a bit surface level and lacking nuance. not all of his songs are written because of his mental health issues or his past, some aren't even written from his perspective. also while you mentioned a lot of personal details about him you didn't seem to do research on some of the most widely known things about him, like the fact that he has pet rats and not mice, and that euthanasia is about one of his rats, Bert. the way you laughed while talking about that song felt really disrespectful. idk man, you seem pretty chill but parts of this video were kinda a miss.

Okay he literally just explained what Will has already stated publicly, which is when he started getting into music and also using music as a coping mechanism. He literally does not go beyond any reasonable boundaries here, I think you're misinterpreting what "looking into stuff" looks like. He throws out a couple names of high school bands he was a part of to emphasize he's always been writing music, literally does not go any further than that. Will doesn't want people digging up old songs or trying to find people he used to know and crap like that. It's not an invasion of privacy to say 5 vague things about someone across 2 decades in less than a minute to develop a narrative.

to possibly clear up some confusion about the black box warrior title- i believe the song is actually talking about the fear of taking heavy prescription meds. the title is referring to a "Black Box Warning" which is a label that will be put on prescription meds to state the worst possible side affects. this can also be an explanation for all the medical references, especially the one about Steven Johnson Syndrome, which is a life threatening illness typically as a reaction to medication. the line "if it was gonna kill you boy it would have by now" is basically him just trying to minimize the fear of taking the drug by saying "oh well if the side affects haven't happened yet, then it probably won't." anyways, just wanted to help with the reference confusion! i've written school essays about his music, and i love looking into it and sharing it with people

Will has said that almost none of his lyrics are literal, most of your self-ish analysis is taken literal and trying to understand him from exactly what he wrote (specially in the Cotard's Solution one). Will has a lot of knowledge in weird psychologic stuff and he puts them in his songs, not meaning he relates. The whole of self-ish is almost like an identity crisis and trying to find out who you are and why you are but from different points of view, not just the points of view will has. It happens the same with the normal album, it has a lot of points of view on the same subject it criticizes (normality) but it doesnt mean he relates to all of them (also, his lyrics are very well thought out, your inability of understanding or researching them doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's writing). Also at least try to go to genius or sth before doing a bad analysis, the Marsha one also was very inaccurate

Yeah really, this whole essay also lacks the very nuanced, kind of delicate analysis of the themes of BPD within the music, which I don’t think are even mentioned correctly cause he calls it bipolar. It comes off as heavy-handed, and almost like it’s stripping the very intentionally crafted, deeply nuanced lyrics of that deeper understanding and just taking it at face value while trying to present itself as very deep and understanding of the material, which it just isn’t.

Hey, heres a quick thought! Shouldnt you dive into the meanings of his songs more than you dived into his personal life? Will Wood had said he didn't want people to dive into his past life, and you pretty much doxxed him. Not only this, but it's clear you didn't take much effort to learn about his songs and just make associations on his songs. Most of Self-Ish wasnt based on him, but moreso his knowledge on mental health. Please, for Will's sake, take down this video or make a new, less revealing one.

When you question whether or not Will Wood even knows what he is talking about or writing about, you come across as skeptical of the legitimacy of his artistry. Like, do you actually believe some artists just write nonsense and don't have their intention figured out before sending it out to their audiences? Let alone someone as meticulous and self-concerned as Mr. Wood? As an essayist, when you write things like that into your scripts, you come across as though you are padding the document for extra opinions and words to make yourself seem like you're actually scrutinizing his work to such a high degree, and yet have come to the conclusion that it's nonsense instead of just figuring you're probs not the target audience.

1. Euthanasia is about one of his pet mice who he had to put down due to medical issues 2. I disagree somewhat with your interpretation of the Normal Album. I don't think it's so much about the complete rejection of normality, though that theme is present, but more about the distress and ostracization that comes with knowing you aren't normal and can never be normal even if you wanted to be, including commentary on the toxicity of conformity, references to the Cold War era, and with Memento Mori serving as a conclusion that in the end it doesnt matter because we will die so even if you cant be normal you can at least try to make the most of things. It's also important to remember that not every song is from the perspective of the musician or a 1:1 representation of real things happening in their lives. Will Wood said something along those lines himself in the Genius Lyrics annotation of Well, Better Than The Alternative.

Memento Mori was actually a really amazing message for me, because I had been getting nihilistic thoughts when I found Will. I was struggling with the thoughts that maybe what I did didn't really matter. But then I heard that song and it really hit for me. Nothing I do truly matters, so why worry about things going wrong? Why not enjoy life while you've got it, because you won't later, and it sure is a better option than not enjoying it. It's a positive way to see when you have a viewpoint that is normally negative. Something about that is just fascinating and surprisingly uplifting

The 'marimba in Jimmy mushrooms last drink is supposed to imitate Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett-someone who was as an inspirations in some aspects. The piece serves as a tribute piece to him almost as it tells the story of a guy coming home from drinking at a Margaretville restaurant at a mall and dying in a car crash driving home drunk. A lot of Will woods songs are told from the perspective of characters and where as they do relate to his experiences they aren't always about him.

I really love Will Wood. 1,5 years ago I listened "Normal album" for the first time. Week later I relistened it 10 times. Then I listened "In case i make it" I fall in love with this one too. Firstly it was hard to listen because of some long songs, but then i started enjoing it. I really love this album. I love the way how almost every song mentally builds to the state where will wood shouts about life and sad things. I remember how i cried when listened "Tomcat disposables" with lyrics. And then "In case i die" released. It was month or two later after I started listening Will Wood. I heard some songs that i never heard before, and month later I discovered "Will Wood & The Tapeworms". I listened to all of it and fell in love with "Everything is a lot", and some time later i started loving Self-Ish too. And after that i was listening all of Will Wood songs almost every day. I really like how I discovered later version of Will Wood firstly and then I discovered his past version. I love every song. I heard all of them more then 300 times. Also not long ago i listened "The Real Will Wood" and I really like it. Some songs really match with each other ( wonder how it happend ( Will Wood is a genius )). Also some songs are just better in this album. It's the best version of "Red moon", which i never expected to become better song. All in all, I'm still listening Will Wood almost every day. I don't know when I get bored of it but 1,5 year later i did not. I listen to other music, but nothing catched me as much as Will Wood. ( dunno who will read this but it was a random message that i wanted to type ( also maybe i practised my english for a bit)).

I think "The Normal Album" was his best album. The absudity and nonsenciclness of the album potrays how mental illness feels very well. Constantly unsure of who you are, only knowing where you are and the output of what you want to be.

blackboxwarrior referenced the treatment of mental illness, he's thrown out the term "OK ultra" a lot as a reference to the government experimenting on people with drugs, and a black box warning is a label put on medications informing the user of serious side effects, so the title combined with references to medical malpractice and experimentation paint a really bleak picture about the song's meaning. that's just my interpretation though!

If you take it off of a website with information that was posted without his permission and it’s something you’re not sure if he’d be comfortable with, just don’t put it in the video, especially because you knew this video would gain traction because of the requests for it and his cult following. Just because he is a music artist doesn’t mean that he’s comfortable with certain basic internet freedoms like your real name and while childhood not being public information despite how large your following is. Will Wood's music is perfect to stim to. The chaos, the cooldown, and perfectly capturing the rage I felt in school towards my bullies (that's who I picture when listening to Thermodynamic Lawyer). I only really found Will Wood's fandom (and adjacent music fandoms and how much my taste overlaps with other peoples') late last year (2023) despite being a fan of his music since 2018. It's been cathartic and wholesome, though I find it funny that people joke about the fandom being full of sad virgin femboys (which I think is off the back end of I/Me/Myself going viral?) when I'm a hypersexual autistic woman lol.

So awesome to see an analysis of his music! I often struggled on how to interpret self-ish, but the way you put it made things clearer for me and made me decide to do more research. I did find myself disagreeing with a lot of your interpretations of the Normal Album- I think this may be because of my personal projection on the album. I think you tend to project most of the songs onto his backstory in life a lot, when alternate ideas could be mentioned. This is, of course, a nit-pick. Sorry if I came off as too critical. I don’t think giving this much private information was necessary to speak about his music. Also like, very surface level readings of his lyrics. I get his music is new to you to an extent, but if your going to make a video on him, at least pronounce the song titles right. Your speculating a lot but like, some of these songs have very confirmed meanings, he streams, he actively talks about this stuff. Idk, you dug into his personal life and brought up details unnecessary and then failed to actually talk about his music effectively. And frankly the way you talk about will wood is extremely dehumanising, your treating his music as of now you understand his mental state inherently, and then speculating on that “maybe he feels like he’s hit rock bottom” which like, it seems very voyeristic. Honestly man, the more I watch of this video the more I feel very fucking annoyed about how you speculate on a strangers mental health. Will wood is a character, Will is a real dude and you don’t have the right to say “this song was probably based on his past trauma”. You keep tying everything to a past that for one, is not a fucking puzzle key that everything is solved by, and for two, isn’t required reading. His music isn’t made to be listened to with his old personal MySpace open.

It’s true that I don’t understand his mental state, I guess I assumed it all connected in some way. I do hope he’s doing better now then he was them. I promise that I made this video in good faith to show off his incredible talent and story. ❤️

Fr. I also think the wrong pronunciation of Lysergide Daydream really showed how little effort was put into looking into Will's music. It literally says the title in the song ffs, its like he just looked up the lyrics and said "yeah, its good enough if I only analyse this!!". I wasn't aware that Will wanted his stuff about his past to be private but I at least had the common sense to not go digging into his history and to realise that, hey, maybe just maybe this is a character and not a real dude. I never NEEDED to know he was a private guy because, honestly, that's not something I feel is normal to look into!! If any parts of Will's songs are Will speaking, its the "stfu, I owe you nothing" parts. If you're going to make a video essay on Will Wood, at the very least do enough research to know what he is and isn't comfy with. At the very least listen to the dang songs. I'd consider myself a huge huge listener and fan of the music in itself, but not part of his immediate fandom in areas apart from just listening and enjoying myself loads so I'm not someone who necessarily knows a lot of the set definitions and usually just enjoy applying them to myself and my own characters and feeling emotions. But if you're making an ESSAY, that is meant to be INFORMATIVE, do this bare minimum research. If you're making a video essay or want to be part of Will's more involved fandom, I expect you to take more care than an average listener. And you are so right with the MySpace comment. Having additional context, even if said context has nothing to do with the original media, will always change your view of said media. Even though some views in art do come from personal experience, and some things can be directly joined to your experience, it doesn't mean that is inherently the case. A lot of the characters I make stem from my own experiences, but the reason I made them in the first place is to separate those experiences from my present self and move on. Do my dysphoric characters stem somewhat from personal experience? Yes, because its the only reason I feel I can accurately write it as I wouldn't have known a lot about it otherwise! But my characters with bipolar and BPD and stuff stem solely from research and have nothing to do with me. Especially in some of these comments OP's been replying to when he was conflating Will with Cotard's syndrome and talking about his "seemingly bad mental state when recording" even though that is literally nothing to do with Will Wood, it is so so visible that he has zero media literacy. I don't understand why people love actors in their roles as characters but can't give musicians the same grace. Musicians play characters just as well as actors do. I also love your point on the surface-level analyses. While I get he's new to the music, if you're new to the music of a mostly underground artist and can't even be bothered to do the correct research then don't make the video. The analyses are the sort of thing I thought when I first listened to the songs and was an overly curious 13-year-old who had no concept of musicians playing characters - but even then, I never looked anything up about his personal life, that's just beyond breaking a boundary to me. 3 years on, I have way more in-depth learning and I'm still discovering new lyrics with new meanings. I don't expect the guy to listen to Will Wood for 3 years, but I expect him to at least care enough to make way less amateur and careless insights. I was 13. This is a grown dude. Sorry for the rant, I love your comment and I hope you're having as good of a day as you can have :)) Edits: Spelling errors, there's probably so many more lol
