well that depends on what press - you will see plenty of lies if you watch Fox News or it's wannabees, but if you use media that is driven by journalistic values and the search for truth, you will get balanced coverage based on actual facts. There is also the 'both sides' issue on news programs where they attempt to show 'balance' by having one person from each side of the argument - I think that's a huge problem when the majority of experts and the population are on one side (as they are in every country on abortion). For example, it has emerged that when the UK was debating Brexit, the people commissioning BBC news could 'get multiple top 10 economic experts' in 20 minutes to speak about why it would be a disaster, whereas it could take them 3 days to track down a single, much less qualified and credible, economist to speculate there was anything positive about leaving the EU. So the viewer saw 2 experts with opposing views - I wonder if the result would have been different if they'd had, say the 99 top experts arguing against it and only 1 for? Spoiler alert - Brexit's a disaster, the experts was right and every single person in this country is suffering financially because of it (well except for the small number of rich people who made a fortune on our currency dived).

Minor corrections: 1- it went to the 5th circuit, not the 7th. 2- the Scotus got involved because there was a conflict between the 5th circuit ruling and an 11th circuit one that confirmed the FDA classification as a safe medication.
@rachelsnee8926 Жыл бұрын
As a Brit, I don't even know what a circuit is! Surely the problem is that it is going to Scotus, one which already struck down Roe v Wade, despite all the GOP judges saying they wouldn't in their confirmation hearings. In that ruling, they cited English law from witch burners from centuries before the US even existed, so they are clearly not basing their decisions on the US constitution or laws, and some of them have made it clear they want to make contraception and gay marriage illegal too. So they are (as the lower circuit Trump judge did at the start) following their religious beliefs, not the law they are supposed to uphold. If a highly funded extremist group can pick a single judge from anywhere in the country to guarantee a ruling in their favour, you don't have a functioning legal system any more...

There are decades of practical use in the US and other countries that prove it to be safe. What does it matter anymore how FDA approved it? In anyway why should courts have anyway second guessing such an approval and how could those suing have standing. You cannot sue just because you do not like something. The law has to harm you. In Finland that it to my knowledge for hospital use only - which is good as it is not cheap and you do not pay for drugs used in hospitals.
@tearainey1 Жыл бұрын
In America people can sue for anything they want to. It doesn't mean they'll win, or that they'll escape unscathed financially, but usually it rarely holds legal consequence for them. That's where the term 'Frivolous Lawsuit" came from. There are many cases of people suing just because they didn't like something (some very high profile cases even concerned religious nuts suing gays because they didn't want to have to serve them in their business). Unfortunately with a system so heavily rigged in favor of money, justices will oversee any case that comes to their desk. Only the morally upstanding ones will toss such frivolous suits and tell the people to knock off their ridiculous behavior. In this case the fringe group knew which judge to target to have their grievances heard. They knew that politically the judge would side with them, and that if they could game the system hard enough they could actually succeed in banning the drug. I've heard that some states are trying to ban it on a state wide level now as well, a result of these extremists pushing their foul agenda and getting away with it. They'd gladly watch the masses suffer just to uphold their minority religious bullsh-t agenda, and unfortunately they have the money to do it. They've also been funding putting their own brand of doctors through medical school, and have even been found to be funding their own judges and lawyers in hopes to get them installed in key regions to continue pushing their fringe agenda. And somehow... It's completely legal and they're making progress.

But once you open it up to millions, you have so many other medications possibly interacting, health problems that may be causing an unknown adverse effect, etc. These side effects probably were never known about because their test pool wasn't large enough to encounter the large variety of people/health conditions/types of use. Interesting 🤔 I think there is conflict of interest by the people who went perposely to have a conservative Judge hear their case on their belief. I'm on the autism spectrum aspergers and have an interlectual Disability I do research the heck out of a medication before I use it and do know how to read medical literature but this group should perhaps have a lesson in reading medical literature just a friendly thought.

This is why we need national licensing for medicine. We need to disbar doctors who push BS like this.

The president of Alliance Defending Freedom, Alan Sears, said this: "We are on a winning trajectory. It may be that the day will come when people say the birth-control pill was a mistake."

I can't image a world view where he thinks 'people' would say that - the people who agree with him already think that, and the majority of the human population will never think that - how many millions of women were spared abortions and unwanted pregnancies and their health and life complications because of it. If he and his group want to go back to pre-science, pre-modern medicine times when women weren't educated or allowed to work outside the home or had their own money, then they should just find a rural area and set up a commune, like other such groups do, not try and force their views on everyone else. I'd also like to know what their solution is to the problem of massive numbers of extra children born to people who don't want them is...

Here an idea if they want to prevent abortions instead of legisating to ban them why not offer financial support to single mothers or couples struggling. Its disingenuous because when life begins is objectively subjective. They equate a fetus without any neural activity or ability to feel to a person because that fetus isnt asking for anything. So if you want more ppl to see it your way offer financial support to new parents, free maternal health, support finding child care to empower those who would carry to term if they had the means. Adoptions aren't the answer, children who are adoption even at birth to loving homes have an increased risk suicide bc the maternal separation is felt. Offer love & compassion. Offer your support to help them with child care & community

Legislating to ban abortions never decreases the number carried out - there are literally millions of data points on this from throughout history and all over the world. And although I agree that support for new parents e.g. maternity/paternity leave and pay, child support payments, free healthcare, free or low cost childcare should be available to all parents (here in Europe we've taken that for granted for over half a century), that is only going to tip the scales on the decision for people who want a child but can't afford it, particularly those who already have children (which I think is the majority of abortions in the US). But it's not an alternative to adoption for those who are victims of rape or incest, who don't wish to interrupt their studies or careers, who are in abusive relationships, who feel they are too young or too old to take on parenting a child, or who just don't ever want to have children. So abortion will always be needed, especially as no contraception method is 100% effective.
