The Improved Performance M1, often referred to as IPM1 or M1IP, was a stopgap before the introduction of the M1A1 upgraded standard. It was intended to implement some of the features being added on the M1E1 prototype and rush it into a production Abrams while some of the other planned features were undergoing further testing, such as the Rheinmetall 120mm cannon. There were also studies that indicated the increasing lethality of Soviet ammunition, which led to the requirement for the M1E1 project to also increase the protection of the vehicle to withstand these new threats. This stop-gap vehicle featured a new turret based on the one intended for the M1E1, sometimes referred to as the ‘long turret’. This turret offered greater protection and a rear turret bustle rack for more stowage space for the crew’s personal gear and to secure their gear better. There were also some improvements to the suspension and powerpack to accommodate the heavier turret and the rear side skirts were adjusted from field feedback. This resulted in about 890 of these M1IP’s were produced between 1984 and 1986.

The M1IP was always my favourite Abrams. It just screams "Cold War gone hot" scenarios across the Fulda Gap.

The US wished it had M1IPs at the start of the Korean War. The conflict would have been much shorter and ended with South Korea taking A LOT of territory from the North!

We had these in South Korea, circa 1991. Even in 1991 these were considered out-dated, as a bunch of M1A1s had just showed off their capabilities in Desert Storm. But I do remember those outdated tanks were outfitted with very modern Sincgars radios...a weird juxtaposition of old and new. And because of the security situation, the tanks in the motor pool had main gun rounds on board - every month we'd pull them all out to inventory and wipe down. This included the often forgotten APERS anti-personnel round for the 105 mm gun - nasty.

FYI: I left 1st Tank (1/72d Armor), Camp Casey in Aug 95 just before 2ID replaced the M1-IP's with M1A1's....

Remember the new tank smell. Brand new M1IP with a crate of BII on the back deck. B 5/32 Armor 24th ID Fort Stewart Ga way back in 1987. Coming from the venerable M60A3 that thing was amazing!

We took M1IPs (actually had XM1 data plates in hull and turret) to Desert Storm from 2nd Armored Division. I was later on them in Korea in 2nd Tank 93-94.

4/64 Armor (was 1/32 Elvis Presley battalion)in 3AD upgraded from M60-A3. We got these straight out of the factory in 1986. We were doing acceptance training in Grafenwöhr when Reagan bombed the Libyans. The bustle rack was useful.

I am doing some research on this. Do you know which units got the M1IPs? It was a very limited production run, so they weren't as common as the normal M1s or M1A1s. From the evidence I could gather 24th Infantry Division got fully equipped with them, 3rd Armored got them (But I am not sure if the entire division did), at least the forward brigade of 1st Infantry in Germany got them, and possibly 2nd ACR got them.

It's pretty tough to tell the difference between an M1A-1 and M1A-1 AIM or M1A-2 Vs M1A-2 SEP.
@genericpersonx333
@genericpersonx333 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, there really is little difference between them all due to the modular nature of the base vehicle. The A designations are really just a mark of what modules happen to be installed, not what chassis they bolted them onto.
