These are all my gripes surrounding YuGiOh and how people have been thinking about it all these years.
Working title for this video was: "YuGiOh is Good You're Wrong Shut Up," but that sounded too childish.

Kaito is killing people and preventing Astral from regaining his memory, but we find out he's doing so to save his brother Haruto from a disease. We then find out Haruto's disease comes from an alien world and over time corrupts him. kandace haith yeah, I know it’s just to sell even more cards. It’s not always bad. Like with synchro and Xyz you could pretty much ignore it if you want to and there’d be no difference. The same pretty much with pendulum. The problem is when the edition radically changes the game and makes other decks useless if you don’t use the new mechanic. Looking at you link summoning. 10 bucks says the some how change the board again or change it to make link summoning less relevant like they did with Pendulum.

@@theruoc147 I agree there was nothing wrong with the original plan of the card game. Is it just me or in this age of reboot the changes that people make feel completely useless? Idk what's more distracting to me the technology within the game , the lack of story constantly being about the end of the world, or the fact that the new cards are odd. For example there's now four different dark magician girls.

I’ve always been “that guy” who complains about differences from the manga. Kaiba‘s role in the TV adaptation was expanded so much that he’s basically become the heart and soul of the franchise when he was originally supposed to be the exact opposite. Also does anyone else ever feel like Joey’s character in the manga was partly about reducing his violent tendencies?! Throughout the early seasons he was pretty much a degenerate, but after getting more into card games he becomes like... an almost functional member of society. Card games were like REHAB for Joey, which was the whole reason his goal of becoming a “stronger duelist” in battle city actually meant something. But that’s all lost in the anime because he’s nowhere near as tough. Kaiba is portrayed as being like 2-feet taller than him (and more buff than he ever was in the manga), and Joey specifically gets manhandled by Bandit Keith in the anime - whom he actual beat to a pulp at one point in the manga. There’s also the simple detail that Yami Yugi was never once actually taller than Yugi in the manga... which is kinda mind-fucky if you’re only used to the anime version. I could go on and on about how the original manga provides answers for so many of the show’s widely accepted inconsistencies... but the point is these changes were more than simply adapting to a new medium, they changed the fundamental themes of the story.
@Arella17
@Arella17 3 жыл бұрын
I know in the manga he seems taller because Yugi is usually slouching while Yami Yugi is more confident and standing with a straight backed posture.
@gameking8809
@gameking8809 3 ай бұрын
Yami is only drawn taller so the viewer can differentiate. The characters don't notice a size difference. And for Kaiba the Manga tells us repeatedly that he is Yugis equal but he only wins against fodder. While the anime gives him more to do and he has actual wins against powerful duelist.

Hm...I honestly still think Arc-V is a pretty good series. It has flaws, like a pretty stale middle during the synchro dimension arc, and an ending, that leaves a pretty bittersweet taste with a bunch of plotpoints not fully resolved, but I still really like it. I cant comment on Vrains since I only watched a couple episodes and I have a certain nostalgia for Zexal since I watched it as a teen...still not the best series overall, but its not as bad as some people say in my opinion. As for the older shows...I remember liking GX but not to a massive extent, 5ds was good, but the setting wasnt quite my thing and as for the original Yugioh...it has its charm, for sure, but at the end of the day its not really my thing. Iconic as it is, to me, the characters just arent as interesting as they could be. All of that is just my opinion though XD.

Konami doesn't make the story for the anime. The stories are made by the anime studios. Konami only provides resources (like card mechanics and monster mechanics) and restrictions (basically, get a sinopsis for the hole show and approve it or not, and if approved say if you want certain elements to take more front stage). Konami is basically a client for the anime studio.

I've got 2 aspects I want to talk about 1) The conflict over the house should be an "Episode 0" event, happening before the story begins and should be between the adults, with Protag-kun caught in the middle. This detaches the "Family Drama" conflict from the "Need Money" conflict, letting the story start simple and become more complex as more context is given. Personally, I would give the aunt a real, terminal illness (or accident) and have the uncle willingly work with the shady organization to try to treat it. The aunt would take to the treatment better than they expected the first of whatever they were trying to make. She might not even remember her family after "awakening" and this could be why she has no issue confronting Protag-kun. 2) You seeming to be ignoring examples of what you are asking for. Zexal is the only season that didn't start with a personal goal. GX is less conflict and more school life until "Dark Forces" become part of the story (only watched some of the first season and season 3). 5D starts as a "Wronged by someone I trusted" story like what you brought up. The "Save the World" aspect was gradually introduced as time when on. Arc-V starts with Protag-kun trying to become an entertainer, drip feeding hints of a larger plot until all hell breaks loose. Vrains doesn't event have a tournament and the first season is a story of revenge

The dark forces are the focal point of GX S4, it's pretty good. Spoilers: Jaden s now an actually serious protagonist thanks to being merged with Yubel, the reality-breaking events of Seasons 1-3 take a heavy toll in the area around Duel Academy allowing the "Darkness" (basically the cosmic embodiment of one part Apathy, another part Death, and another part Depression) to take root in this dimension. Jaden/Yubel's arc in the season is one of finding balance between enjoying the game (like Seasons 1-2) and also accepting the consequences of your actions (Season 3), while the other cast are all wrapping up their minor arcs and getting ready to move on thanks to their individual episodes, they also help Jaden/Yubel stop being such a buzzkill and regain his faith in humanity and in himself. That lightheartedness and "good ole days" character wrap ups is cut short though due to the emissaries of Darkness convincing people to essentially allow themselves to be disintegrated and said emissaries tricking duelists into dueling, and then through psychological manipulation/torture, losing - thus dying and getting absorbed into Darkness Shadow Games style. It eventually gets to the point where there are several scenes where duelists within sections of the island and streets of Domino City get disintegrated, and the list of names of various DM, Season 0, and Manga exclusive characters (Miho, Ushio, and Seto Kaiba being among them) just vanish one by one. Eventually, everyone in the world is dead except Jaden/Yubel where he must battle Darkness lest Darkness swallow him too. Aaaaand he does. Then Atem thanks him for bringing everyone back to life (including Yugi) by sending him back through time long enough for Jaden/Yubel to duel Yugi/Atem in the finale.

To be fair, a card game series where the main conflict is literally over an illegal gambling subculture surrounding the game would be pretty rad. Why do these duels matter? Because actual money is on the line. Where does the danger come from? The fact that some of these gamblers are hardened criminals, who don't care about things like Fair Play or Not Hurting Children. Like, make it a Gambling Anime, except with a trading card game rather than games like Poker or whatnot. the thing that makes sense about the whole “card games being more than a nerdy sport” is the whole magical concept. the card games aren’t just cards: it was basically a wizard fight using spirit monsters. Yugi vs Marik and vs Bakura wasn’t just two dudes playing cards, it was the ghost of an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh trying to get his spirit to rest, overcoming his enemies, and the card game represents the magical wizard fights or whatever. thus, the narrative uses card games as more than just card games.

I think it's pretty clear that Takahashi is pursuing a personal project that's near and dear to his heart. It's pretty clear that he wanted Zexal to be his second magnum opus, but didn't get the creative freedom he wanted. Most of Takahashi's recent work looks a lot like the scenery from Zexal and focuses on the themes of "hope and the future". I really disagree with what you said about Yuma. I think he perfectly exemplifies a character with personal goals. In Zexal, Astral wants to regain his memories and Yuma just wants to get some respect as a duelist. Sure, there are evil forces that threaten the world, but Yuma is mainly involved to help astral and his other friends who are directly involved. It's such an underrated series and it's the only version of Yugioh since the original to have that classic Kazuki Takahashi feel. I would love to sit down with the guy and talk to him. He's my idol as an artist and writer.

i think the biggest thing that shot Zexal in the foot was Yuma's stupid hair. yes, all of the protagonists have stupid hair, but i feel the others had a more appealing factor to them. In general I feel like the 'crazy hair styles' of characters in general started to get a little too wild with Zexal, and that may have contributed to it being treated like the black sheep of the franchise.

That's true but that all could have been done with the game at all. The example he's giving here specifically requires the game of Duel Monsters to work but 5Ds isn't like that. It's still a great series, especially if you watch the Japanese version, but it feels like the characters only solve their problems with dueling because the script needs them to. The original series wasn't like that nor was the first half of Arc-V.

Vrains didn't have a tournament arc. Looking back I honestly felt like the card game in Vrains was treated like an after thought. Like it barely played much into the overall narrative role compared to the other yugioh shows. GX has the duel spirits, 5D's had the signer dragons and synchro monsters cause the apocalypse, Zexal had the Numbers, and Arc-V had all the dimensions be based on various summoning methods. I can't really think of any major story or plot points that connect to the game. I guess you could say the lost incident considering the kids had to constantly duel. But that's treated more for it's psychological effect on the kids rather than the duels.

There's actually this idea for a story I've had rumbling around in my head for a little over a year now. Not involving Yugioh, but a new card game called Overlords. Unlike in many game based shows, there would be no supernatural threat determined to take over or destroy the world. The main conflict comes from the main character's drive to help his crippled brother walk again by winning enough money through tournaments to have a special procedure perform that would grant him a new set of legs. The biggest conflict would be how the main character approaches each battle and what his opponent's goals are. They could range from the want for lots of cash, to fame, to personal problems, or even loved ones. Now, when I said there would be no supernatural threat, I failed to mention that there would be some supernatural tidbits here and there. It's just not what carries the story as a whole. It's used in a couple of fights where someone may be in a worse position than he, and one character is particular is connected to it all. This may sound really dumb, but I've always wanted a game based story that's more grounded, with maybe some supernatural elements. Cardfight Vanguard almost did this, but it ended up evolving into a world ending game later on.

RIP Takahashi. I keeps feeling like it just happened today for me. Vrains feels like the odd one out here because the fact that the character play with trading cards barely matters. Card games just sort of happen and nobody questions why they choose to duel each other instead of any other form of fighting. So we can't really say it has a focus on the card game, nor to sell the cards, but maybe it's missing the "game" part of the trading card game. Vrains doesn't even have a tournament arc (btw there's the answer to 11:52).

Yep. It's sad because Duel Monsters was originally a tabletop rpg using cards so they think the plot twists in Duelist Kingdom were stupid because the actual product was a CCG. IMO, Cardfight Vanguard is more of the series that learned from YGO's commercialization since Itou is obsessed with getting CCG mechanics right even if it's only a tool to move the story.

I think there’s a lot of interesting lore in the yugioh series which often skipped over. The talk of other dimensions in which the cards live, presence of mystical powers and otherworldly creatures taking power in the main world. How the cards are often manifestations of the people or certain desires or how people grow and evolve. The cards themselves have subtle stories in them, if you look closely and a lot of the themes and moments in said stories are enough to make you feel emotion. Don’t even get me started on all the things Darkness warned Judai of, at the end of GX or the parallels between the Meklord genocide and the ignis warfare of AI rising up, as part of humanities general ignorance and hasty actions, leading to inevitable destruction. Plus the possibilities of branching timelines, in relation to main character’s actions in the series creating new technology. It’s theorized that Kaiba’s choice to become a “better” person or not lead to the creation of either Xyz and Synchros, respectively. There is so much little details which can be found that they just need some polish, to truly stand out. The issue is definitely Konami pushing of products over stories or character. It really shows in the last 2 series of YGO (VRAINS & ARC V) being lesser and missing something. VRAINS had serious budget issues and production issues but you can see glimpses of glory in there. Characters get to talk about philopshy and really complex stuff about human existence and there is a good amount of synergy between the cards and the characters. It does start to make you wonder if every person in the world has their own specific deck but it works. Soulburner, for example, uses Salamangreats, which focuses on reincarnation, which reflects how he is trying to reincarnate himself to move past his PTSD of loosing his parents and the whole lost incident fiasco. It just needs more polish because, as it stood, the character only had the Hollywood PTSD of selectively getting emotional, at plot points. Not to mention he does come across as hogging the spotlight from other characters who ended up being neglected. Many other characters in the show have themes in their struggles which are reflected in their cards. AI’s @Ignister deck is a straight homage to the rest of Ignis. I could go on but Vrains is a whole barrel of worms. Also there was no tournament arc, HA!

Im willing to argue this change started twards the mid point of filler in the duel monsters anime and took hold fully in GX In GX they do specify that dueling is just a part of culture. They outright confirm that its a socially bad thing to do, to turn down a duel. The implication is Kaiba as always is really really big on this card game, the card game was reponcible for jumping ahead decades in technology with card games being an arbitrary but intended purpus for it I would say a real world analogue would be like how everyone started buying Playstations because they were better than DVD players and that probably got people that didnt play games to be comfortable with playing video games but because anime, make it times 100.

While I agree with your video in pretty much its entirety, I do feel as though some of the things you said about the original yugioh that the spinoffs lacked is actually present in the first spinoff, yugioh gx. I understand why you didn't bring this up because it seems like you only watch some of the anime not all of it when it comes to the spinoff animes, so its understandable why you didn't see a lot of these aspects in gx but I'm gonna bring up why I think Gx actually does have quite a few of the qualities that made the original so good. Firstly, character motivation. This is probably the easiest one to explain as you don't really need to read through the lines to see that almost every major character and villain in yugioh gx have a personal character motivation that drives them, at least at first, the only real exceptions for the villains being Darkness and Saiou(and to be fair it would be hard for Saiou to have a super personal motivation when he's possessed by an outer worldly force that wants to destroy the world.) and Hell Kaiser Ryo for the heros during s1 and s2(in s3 he gets a more personal motivation outside of just wanting to win in the form of him wanting to have one last incredible duel before his heart condition killed him) On the hero's side of things, Manjoume Jun the main rival in the series was attending duel academy and aiming to be the king of duelists because his two older brothers were pressuring him to do so, he felt as though he was obligated to do it to be worthy of standing side by side with his brothers. Asuka Tenjoin the main kinda sorta love interest was often getting involved with the various things going on at duel academy because she was looking for her older brother who disappeared. Edo Phoenix became a pro duelist and did other various things throughout the show because he was looking for the man who killed his father and stole the final card his father(who was a card designer) made so that he could exact revenge on the man who caused him so much pain and took away the person he loved most. Finally Sho Marifuji wanted to prove that he was a true duelist and live up to his older brothers name, as well as not be a burden to his friends. Some people would bring up that Judai had no real personal motivation for the first two seasons of the show outside of pretty generic stuff but honestly thats pretty much the point of Judai early on. He's supposed to be the every man, the one who duels just for the fun of it and even then, you could argue he had a personal goal of wanting to become the next duel king to be like his idol Yugi Muto, and even if you say that isn't a personal goal that really works the same way the others do, he gains much more personal goals during s3 and s4. As for the villains Amnael was trying to get the sacred beasts so he could save himself from dying not to destroy the world or anything like that and in the end he ended up deciding to change sides and act as a test for Judai to find out if he was ready to stop Kagemaru and Kagemaru wanted the Judai's soul so he could control the sacred beasts and regain his youth(For the sake of context to get the sacred beasts you needed to win all 7 spirit keys from their holders, hence why the duels were needed and we'll get to the stuff about Judai's soul later). Yubel was obsessed with Judai and their relationship as well as what Judai did to her without knowing, in the end while she was going to destroy the world the reason why her plan went the way it did was because it was all just a way to get Judai's attention back on her as well as destroy everything but them so that they would be together forever like she always wanted. Finally while Darkness and Saiou did not have super personal motivations for why they were trying to destroy the world or why they were using card games to do it, its explained why each of them had to use duel monsters to do so. Saiou needed to get the two keys to the satellite he needed to complete his plan back from Judai and Edo and when he got them both he tried to enact his plan without dueling Judai only to be stopped by elemental hero neos. As for Darkness, he actually tried to kill Judai but Judai was immune to his powers for the most part so to fully exact his plan and plunge everyone into darkness he needed to defeat Judai in a duel. Secondly, the importance of magic and spirits in the game. Honestly a lot of people downplay exactly how important the magic and spirit stuff about duel monsters was to the plot of gx. You could maybe argue that the sacred beasts were an afterthought though I'd argue they weren't, but some of the other stuff in gx you just can't deny were heavily important to the plot. At first the entire reason why Judai is branded as special to the audience is because he was able to see duel monster spirits. One of the numerous reasons why the sacred beasts were locked away is because their presence in the normal world was literally sucking the life away of all of the duel monster spirits in the world, and Judai's soul was needed to control the sacred beasts because he was stated to have "the strongest power over spirits"(which gets expanded upon in s2 and s3). In s2 the neo spacians were basically duel monster spirits who came to aid Judai against the light of destruction and Destiny hero bloo d(or plasma) was literally consuming the souls of its victims because of it being infected with the light of destruction. Not to mention as I said earlier Judai's "power" is expanded upon and revealed to be something that stood against the light of destruction, something that prevented the light from corrupting Judai to its will like almost everyone else. In s3 the main antagonist of the entire arc is a duel monster spirit and most of the arc takes place in the duel monster spirit world, not to mention Judai's powers were finally revealed to be something called "the gentle darkness" which Judai has because he is the descendant of an ancient king, and it is revealed to be that the antagonist yubel was that king's protector and lover who then found Judai and continued her mission to protect him which is what led to all the problems that led to Judai sending Yubel away which lead to season 3. Sadly s4 did not have nearly as much importance placed on the magical and card spirit aspects of things(most likely due to the change in writer) but Judai's and Yubel's powers were still heavily important to why they detected Darkness and why they were able to stop him. In conclusion while I don't disagree that the main purpose of gx was to continue to sell cards, I do think its unfair to say its as bad as the other spinoffs in this regard. It may be used to sell cards but I thinks its worth bringing up at the very least that gx tried to keep that same feeling the original series had in some ways and sometimes it even succeeded, theres a reason why out of all the spinoffs, gx is the only one that really seemed like a sequel to yugioh duel monsters and its not just because of the occasional reference to the original series or Yugi's, Kaiba's or Pegasus's occasional presence in the series.

As yugioh continues to develop, i really want to see some better development because the duels are becoming more repetitive and sometimes i just skip them, although each variation of yugioh is different in there own right, i personally want to see a more interwoven story connected to all the other story arcs almost like arc v but a more thorough better connected story maybe with all the protagonists and antagonists of their respective stories and we get to see the new cards of their respective archetypes and as you said get that magic connection from the original story.

Okay so I understand where you’re coming from. As someone who also loves the manga I can sympathize with being put off by the shift in focus when it comes to how the game is presented from a more realistic thing to a weird, omnipresent way of resolving conflicts that’s just there because it’s yugioh. But I don’t think this influences the writing or soul of the series as much as you’re letting on. I think a lot of stories of subsequent yugioh series have a lot of the kind of thing you described in the latter half of the video. I still find myself attached to these characters, and many of them I’d say are given the weight present in many manga characters. Vrains is a personal story about learning to be close to people after dealing with trauma. Personal stakes for characters like yuma comes from the characters he meets along the way rather than someone we know from the outset like his parents. I like that someone is talking about this shift in writing because not many people have on KZbin but a lot of distinctions between what do and don’t work seem kind of erratic.
@GeteMachine

Well the omnipresence of the game being pretty much the alternative to anything else, is just because the cards are being marketed. Just like how Beyblade pretty much settles everything. Even the government making super soldiers just to play beyblade. They do it to keep the focus on the thing for immersion.

That's why I loved 5Ds so much, because at it's core it was about climbing out of a poor life, and the card game takes the position of a professional sport. Jack steps on top his friends and takes away what little they have left (Stardust Dragon) in-order to attain a life of riches and Yusei is trying to get back at him, then the latter half saving the world thing happened and I didn't much care.

“Why people didn’t like ZEXAL” People, generally, specifically didn’t like Yuma early on (or through basically the entire show). However, ZEXAL II’s considered by a fair number of people to be the best anime in the franchise.

If that's the case, then that would make more sense. I liked ZEXAL, but people typically just say they didn't like it because of Yuma. If they actually mean that they liked the story-line then that would make me feel a lot better.

Ive heard people love Zexal as it goes on because of the developpment Yuma goes through during the series, going from a grade school level of dueling (sticking cards that look cool together and playing on autopilot) to actually being able to break boards and use good strategies, instead of being a god clutch master every game. There's also the dub of zexal which turned off a lot of people when they first saw it on saturday morning, since it's really atrocious and butchers Yuma's character. Sorry for my incoherent explanation haha

That's the reason I dislike Zexal they could of made the mc any other character and I would of enjoyed it a hell of a lot more. Kite, Shark, or even one of the side characters would of been so much better. Honestly Kite, Shark, and the duels are what kept me around, also Dextra is bae 😉

I liked zexal and i consider Yuma as one of the best protagonist, because he feels more human and realistic, someone that it's bad but never give up and try to improve, while other protagonists since they born they are undefeatable because yes everyone loves Mary Sue's protagonist right?

VRAINS is probably the spinoff with the most personal story to tell. Most characters and especially Yusaku have personal stakes for why they duel. If fact I remember reading somewhere that Yusaku doesn’t even like dueling he does it because he has to. Which makes me realize he never had a moment where he smiled and commented on having a good time.

season 0 looks old but once he got funding from konami to draw duel monsters aka season 1 onwards it looks amazing cause he had more editors funding to redraw stuff and help and just had better understanding of his craft and they went back and fixed up his panels with more budget
@Trueshogunate
@Trueshogunate 4 жыл бұрын
@@razkable Konami isn't the company that hires editors for the mangaka, that's actually shueisha, publisher of shonen jump. Because of the burst of popularity of the card game arc, it led to Takahashi extending out, leading to Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters. I don't think funding had anything to do with the more polishing of art even though it helps, just that Takahashi's art style changed from the first few volumes up to duelist kingdom. With the manga anniversary a few years ago it led to the releases of the bunkoban volumes I believe, which did have some significant changes esp with the Egyptian arc which Takahashi drew while ill leading to his much needed hiatus. Based on his author notes, I don't think the publisher had anything to do with the remade panels or art, just Takahashi redoing parts to fix issues in addition to the new art covers.

sarthak arora wtf are you talking about? The entirety of the original manga is 100% canon. The Duelist Kingdom arc in the manga reference the first 60 chapters quite a lot and The Ultimate RPG game that Yugi and Bakura play in the Millennium World (pharaoh’s memory) arc is a massive reference to the Monster World RPG board game they played during chapters 50-59 the chapters before the Duelist Kingdom tournament.

So heres my thoughts on this. First of all, the entire 'spin offs worse bc card game bad' has been a mindset among non-game players for a VERY long time. While the point isn't really wrong here, I think saying the rest of the franchise doesn't give a reason for the card game to exist is just... simply untrue. Speaking as a fan of the franchise as a consumer of the shows/manga, and a player of the card game, the evolution of the Duel Monsters game from a magical mcguffin to give it's shonen a hook to a full on in universe way of life is an interesting one. You see that slow progression from DM to GX, and it's more realized in 5Ds, where dueling has become something of a hyper popular competitive sport. It's used to solve problems and settle disputes and for entertainment in the same way you'd use any kind of sport or contest of wit, just with a bigger, more bombastic anime twist. And also, again, as a player of the game myself, the heavy focus on marketing new cards is one of my favourite aspects of the show. Anime fans of yugioh tend to have this mindset that they're the only people these shows are made for, when theres plenty of people (like myself) who DO watch these for the new cards too.
