With respect, coulrophobia (fear if clowns) iirc is tied to the "uncanny valley" which is where things unsettle someone because they are similar to things we know, but juuuust different enough that we can't "categorize" it, we don't subconsciously know how to react, and it puts us in a place of unease. That's where the whole clowns are terrifying thing comes from, or so I've been told.

I like that the twist is that the clowns aren't evil- always fond of the episodes where the monsters aren't actually the villains, even if poor chris is still going through it. This reminds me of the Michigan Chillers book Sinister Spiders of Saginaw. Where the main character had arachnophobia until one day there was an invasion of giant spiders in her town. These spiders were actually an alien race that came to take over but there was another race of spiders that were good and were able to turn into people. Well for spoilers when the girl was able to take down the evil spider group apparently two were coming at her home but it turns out it was the good spiders that can turn into people and big surprise it was her own parents. Which meant she herself is an alien spider all along. But instead freaking out she just learned to accept it (especially when she literally fought her own fear of giant spiders).

I think the short story sounds more interesting than the episode, probably given the element of Chris's parents not recognizing his suffering, as the act of one's own parents being amused by your suffering, especially if you tells them and they say something like "you're fine", would be traumatic for anyone. Even before I was exposed to the idea of clowns being scary I never did like them; I never understood why it would be necessary for someone to dress up in such ridiculous outfits in order to be entertaining. I was big into the wild west as a kid but I never wanted to see a rodeo no matter how fun they looked because knowing there would be a clown always ruined it for me.
