See I always loved the design of the STRV-103 as a tank. It is perfect for a defensive style of combat. Yes it has disadvantages but advantages as well.
@kintho1

After all that happened in the last 12 months and information coming up about the effectives of the T-series, I think with the 103 and adding a little more reactive armour, can easily take on available russian tanks.

I still don't understand how the S Tank was designated as a main battle tank. In fact, its existence has me asking again what makes an MBT an MBT
@Luluchan00
@Luluchan00 Жыл бұрын
@@kintho1 The 103 is completely obsolete. There is no viable amount of ERA you can place on the front to block 3bm60 or 3bm59. The base armor is just too thin. There's a reason the Swedes went for the Strv 121 and then the Strv 122 which is just an up armored 2a5. The 103 has poor mobility, poor usefulness on a open battlefield or a city environment, and poor ammunition selection. As bad as Russian armor has proven, there's a reason people don't expect the Leopard 1 to do well in Ukraine, and the Leo1a5 is superior to the 103.

A tank is never a defensive tool, you use it to attack with speed and firepower or counter attack if you were attacked first, Setting up tanks in idle positions for a long time is wrong use of a tank. Tanks = Cavalry.
@louisbabycos106
@louisbabycos106 Жыл бұрын
The STRV is a horrible choice for an MBT at best it's a niche tank destroyer and even in that role outside of Forrested areas it would be sub par in that area as well . An effective tank or even a tank destroyer from the 1960s onward needs a rotating turret . If somehow you could mount a rotating turret to the STRV you would have something special because of it's suspension was awesome. Being able to kneel and hug the ground is incredibly useful up until the widespread use of top attack munitions. A good use of the STRV today would as a javelin, hellfire or tow 2 missel carrier with a small turret . I'm sure that a small displacement turret large enough for hellfire, javelins ,spike ,nolols or tow could be fitted to the hull . The cost of conversation would be prohibitev and logistics would be constraining for such an out of date vehicle but it would work very well if it could be adequately supported .

Sorry to disturb this adulation for the Leopard II, but back in 1997 we ran with our Leopard I A5's several free manoeuvres against regiment from the south of Germany with their Leopard II A5's. They were clearly in favour of the army commandments and were set out to win, but with strategies from known WW2 aces (Knispel, Rommel, et. al.) we were able to eliminate a whole platoon of II A5's with our old outdated material. Their last tank has even been fought with a sabre duel between their commanders standing on the rear motor cover side-by-side. ;-) This proves that even old scrap metal may play a vital role if handled properly or is in the control of well trained or guided units.

@Wessel Reynierse Unfortunately, since the 1950s, the rise of anti-tank weaponry has grown considerably from what was available in WW2. The antitank guided missile systems enable infantry to confidently take out a tank from 2 or more kilometres. Yes, tanks are still handy items, but on a modern battlefield with Medium and heavy combat teams need infantry, aerial, and artillary support. Otherwise, if used by themselves, they can get destroyed very quickly. Even allied infantry managed to knock out german heavy tiger tanks when they were confronted with them. In Syria 10 leopard2 A4 tanks were knocked out by infantry alone with whatever means they had at their disposal. There is KZbin footage of women Kurdish fighters knocking out a Turkish Leopard 2. One hit huge fireball and plume of black smoke. The 1973 Yom Kippur war showed up the Israeli tactics of using tanks unsupported as deadly 300 knocked out on the first day by the Egyptian infantry with Saggar missles. There was a good horizon documentary about this in 1975 / 1976 The Bull's-eye War was the title. The early electronic systems shown in this documentary have only gotten more powerful in computing and lighter.

@damianousley8833
@damianousley8833 Жыл бұрын
@gun fisher The system I think you are referring to is an Israeli development against projectiles aimed at a tank where an incoming projectile or missle triggers the detection system which is a microwave radar and a small explosive charge is deployed and detonates causing a shock wave that detonates the incoming weapon before it strikes the tank. However, I was talking about mines which can be deployed ahead of a tanks path of direction and lie in wait for the tanks weight to detonate them. There were systems where infantry could project these mines by a throwing system from cover, not exposing themselves to direct fire from the tanks, secondary armourment, or tank supporting infantry. Simple, you can place the mines ahead of the tank safely without getting yourself shot up in the process. This process means you do not have to plant extensive mine fields, which the enemy can either circumvent or avoid. So if they do, you can deploy more mines rapidly in a targeted fashion to imobilise the enemy armour.modern mines utilise plastics and limited metal component's and are hard for metal detectors to pick up. But then again, there is always the reliable old favourite mine, the Claymore, which kills and maims infantry and also does extensive damage to light armoured vehicles.

If anything, at this point the disaster and humiliation for Russia of invading Ukraine has greatly reduced the ability and likelihood of Russia trying to project any power at all outside their borders. It's clear at this point they would have no answer for NATO infantry with anti-tank weapons let alone modern western MBTs. With most of their modern tanks lying in ruins on Ukrainian lands it will be years before Russia once again has a threat capable tank force. Recent reports suggest at most Russia can manufacture around 60 modern tanks per year...less than they would need for 1 month of operations in Ukraine at their current loss rates.

@@Mal101M Although what you say it true, the weapons sent are ones that are being replaced. Either by upgrades, or new larger orders. So even though there is a temporary dip in the amount of weapons they have, it is quickly being refilled. For example Poland has been placing orders for huge amounts of weapons, so they have a lot of old stuff to retire, or give away. Likewise with most of what the US has been sending, older systems that has been replaced with new ones. As a result from this conflict, and the threats russia has made, pretty much everyone has increased their defense spending, as it has become clear that diplomacy, economic coercion and common sense, is of no use in stopping an invasion. putin has made it clear that he will stop at nothing, send every last man he can, and never ever back down, no matter the cost. So it is painfully clear that the only way to stop an invasion, is by having superior firepower. Sweden for example, has been building their defense on the premise that it would be far too costly for anyone (russia) to invade. With the hope (and under the table agreements) that they will get support from NATO. But it has become painfully clear that putin doesn't care how costly a war will be, is and keeps getting, he will not back down. And that putin will threaten with nukes to prevent anyone from assisting. Sweden can no longer count of common sense to tell an aggressor that 'no, this war will be too costly.' or rely on assistance when other nations are being threatened with nukes. So they officially asked to join NATO. The point being that even if russia somehow magically retains the ability to quickly rebuild their army, the rest of the western world will already have built a much stronger force by that time. The only point in time where they will be 'weak' is from now, until their orders are being fulfilled. And that is debatable, because if anyone else gets invaded, they too will be able to count on the same support as Ukraine, with less steps, as putin's threats has shown to be ineffective. And with joining NATO, they are guarantied to get the support regardless of threats. So I would argue that even IF russia somehow still pose a threat, they are still less of a threat, because now, through the actions of putin, pretty much everyone is allied against russia. At least on the European side... Unfortunately on the middle eastern side , or russias south side , so to speak, things are looking ,,, restless. With old and new conflicts all they way from Turkey to China boiling. I suspect that even if russia somehow comes out on top in this conflict, they will quickly be involved in conflict over there. if nothing else, as a means for putin to stay in power. Which also would divert the threat from the European side. So no matter how things turn out , I think for the near future, russia will be less of a threat to Europe, one way or another.

The Abrams is just a heavier Leopard 2 with a jet engine. And American Grunts inside it . The Marines use to have Abrams until 2021 when they were taken away from the Marines. After that it hits high level composite Armour on the main part of the turret. So long as the space in the cheeks is longer than the tungsten rod the tank is safe from anything.
