If, say, he bought a car without wheels and he put some Vossens and Pilot Sports on it, then that would factor into maintenance because it's impacting the ability for the car to be driven on the road.

I think what you meant to say was don't buy the cheapest, neglected 12C you could buy and expect it to not have problems. I'm betting the problems had with it were cam phasers which is caused by not changing the oil on time or maintaining proper engine oil level. The problem isn't the 12C, the problem is the prior owner(s).
