The Abyss DVD's were from a non-anamorphic (letterboxed) transfer kicking around for pre-DVD VHS and Laserdisc releases, 25% less vertical resolution than anamorphic, so this isn't a strict comparison of an optimal DVD and UHD/4K. But still, let's remember that 4K/UHD has TWENTY-FOUR and TWENTY times the pixel count of NTSC and PAL (and SECAM) respectively).

I'm sure it looks amazing (wouldn't know, myself, as it's no longer available), but I'm still troubled by the total lack of film grain, and the process by which they achieved that: A.I. upscaling.
@jozdundar5 ай бұрын
I got a chance to see this new version in theatres. I've also seen the 35mm many times in theatres. The lack of film grain and waxy nature of the faces was quite noticeable. While light years ahead of the waxy look from a decade ago, it was still quite distracting. As was the new teal colour grade, which differs from the print film look significantly in my opinion. While not incredibly terrible, it was still disappointing to see after how long we wait for an Abyss Blu-ray 😢

Tons of 4K discs use AI upscaling, including some of the transfers you love I'm sure. AI upscaling is just a tool, and as is the case with any other tool used by an artist, it all comes down to the choices they make in how they wield it.

The 2014 theatrical cut HDTV remaster looks better than the UHD. It's more filmlike, with grain retention, no waxy DNRed faces, genuine detail and 35mm texture, and no AI crap. The only reason to get the UHD is to have the special edition in a constant quality as opposed to fan reconstructions.

You're wrong. I've attended a 70mm screening in 2019 and was shocked to realize how accurate the color grading people had been complaining about since 2014 actually was. Before the 2014 remaster shown on Cinemax, there simply never was an accurate video master, and people got accustomed to bad ones, hence the complaining. The 2014 remaster and this mildly tweeked UHD color grading share the same color palette as the 70mm print I saw. It's in the ballpark, like 95% accurate. I wish all remasters would retain such amount of accuracy.

@BeberDag1304825 ай бұрын
