You missed out. This is a great movie if you watch Director's cut. But original version is "meh" in the end. And you didn't get to see a thousand foot wave at the coast of California or understand what aliens actually wanted.

This is a great reaction combo cuz they’re both movie nerds that appreciate nuance. They also don’t sit there and try to make lame jokes instead of paying attention. The Abyss is one of my all time favourite movies. Really dig that this reaction is so long so we can appreciate many scenes and get the in depth analysis afterwards. Thumbs up. 👍🏻

Ed Harris' scenes where he is screaming at his men to cut the hose to the door so he can save them, and where he's screaming at Lindsey to fight, are so well done. He conveys such helpless desperation that I get choked up every time no matter how many times I watch this.

Correct. There was a whole conversation Bud had with the aliens (the aliens communicating via visual montage of historical media clips...basically saying "you killing each other is effing up the planet with your NUKES, and now you're about to start ww3 (all the broadcasts of USA and USSR pointing fingers atbeach other and gearing up for war) so we're gonna reset you all".... and Bud arguing that humanity could get better and maybe ww3 wont happen and "but how do you KNOW"... and THEN we get the repeating of Bud's last words to Lindsey...his knowing self sacrifice to save his crew and his love for Lindsey, which ultimately gives humanity a 2nd chance.... the poignance of that is lost in the theatrical cut.

There's a SUPER good documenatary about making this movie called "Under Pressure: Making the Abyss." Almost everything in this movie is practical, they made (to this day) the worlds largest underwater set. Cameron literally invented a bunch of new technology to make this movie. All the actors had to go through intense training and hold their breath for 3 mins.. Ed was able to hold his nearly 6 mins! The liquid breathing is real and has been tested on many animals with success.. although it's never been approved for human use.

Got a couple for you. Regarding the liquid breathing, it is a real thing. Ed Harris didn't have to do it, but it was a real thing. The rat did have to do it when they submerged her. The other thing to know is that the novelization of this movie was done by Orson Scott Card. James Cameron was invested in the novel being great as well so he gave Card a huge amount of access to the production. It is one of Card's best works! The first three chapters are stories from the younger days of Virgil, Lindsey, and Coffee. The chapters are so well done that the actors utilized them in the character backstories! Glad you liked this one! I had fun with your reactions!

As a former US submariner, this movie is also one of the more accurate depictions of an SSBN on film. When they were talking about the capacity to hold 192 warheads, each with the yield of 5x Hiroshima, they weren't lying. And we have 14 of those boats. We used to have 18, but converted 4 to SSGNs to hold a much larger capacity of conventional missiles. Due to arms treaties, a number of the missile tubes are also left un-filled now, but still. That's definitely "end a country" in a can, with more than two six packs (formerly three) in our inventory.

Fun fact: liquid breathing breathing is a thing! Though it's a bit complicated and last time they tried (in the 90s I recall), it was costly and you needed alot of equipment for it to work right. In short, tech wasn't there yet to make it reliant, small, cheaper and worth it. It's not really worth any company investing much into at this point.

The first Terminator has some personal applicability and resonance to my own life that makes it one of the most powerful pieces of Art I've ever experienced. However, in a more 'conventional' sense this IS Cameron's best movie overall. It is baffling how a man who made 'The Terminator', 'Aliens', 'The Abyss' & 'Terminator 2', could then create the mediocre, 'True Lies', then go even lower & release the Shiny Dreck that is 'Titanic' and the 'Avatar' films. The last 3, other than the special effects, feel like they were made by a different person. Paper-Thin characters, phoned-in plots, uninspired writing & dialogue, _Everything_ but the technical aspects are just bland at best.

"Armageddon is even less original than I thought!" Not only was it greenlit in direct response to "Deep Impact" the story is damn near identical to a Japanese space movie made the same year as 2001: A Space Odyssey, called "Green Slime" directed by "Battle Royal"s Kinji Fukasku. (There's a toxic slime on the asteroid that will kill everyone rather than the dust cloud kicked up by the impact, but otherwise, the story beats are nearly the same)

Gary Oldman delivers a line that shares a similar sentiment to your statement about Coffee not being evil for the sake of the script needing a bad guy. In 1998's Lost in Space he says something close to "Evil isn't an affliction one falls under; evil is a moral choice one makes". That's actually a pretty decent movie too. Nice! I saw this movie on Blu Ray for the first time, the 35th Anniversary Edition, contains both the 140 minute cut and the 175 minute Special Edition. This movie suffered a lot of problems behind the scenes: James Cameron was going through a divorce with his wife, Gale Anne Hurd at the time and would yell at the cast at the crew for not doing a good job on any of the scenes, blaming them for his mistakes. Ed Harris, Bud, punched Cameron in the face as he was tired of him yelling all the time. A hurricane had hit near the set of the movie and production had to be shut down until the repairs were made. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Lindsay, walked out of the set, crying her eyes out following her resuscitation scene was filmed with her getting slapped over and over again, until Cameron yelled cut. She said to the crew, "We are not animals!" Cameron almost drowned during the scene where Bud and Catfish are swimming from side of the platform to the other. Cameron punched the stunt coordinator for not helping him. The cast and crew tore apart the set with their bare hands after filming had wrapped, to let out all the frustration, rage and anger for working with Cameron. While driving down the road from the set, Ed Harris pulled over the side of the road and broke down crying, as he knew that 4 hellish months of filming was finally over.

Ed harris acted without Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in the CPR scene. She had a kind of nervous breakdown just before the shooting of this scene and left the stage. James Cameron, under pressure for being overscheduled, had to go on shooting and asked Harris to do the scene looking at a sand bag instead of the actress. And then, he delvered this intense and touching performance. James Cameron said that from that day on, he had a lot more respect for actors.

I saw this when it was released in 1989 and at 32 years old it was the first time I had seen such incredible believable effects. Thia has always been one of my favourite movies and a long time fan of James Cameron. Glad to see you enjoying it so much. Thanks for a great review. 🌊💧💧🌊💧

I was about 18 when this came out, unfortunately I didn't get to see it at theatres, but years later after I became a firefighter, one of the guys on my crew, who was a qualified rescue diver, watched this movie at least once a month at the firehouse. I always knew it was a great movie and ahead of it's time, but I never quite had the appreciation for it like I do now, after watching your guys reaction!! I'm more into music reaction channels, but I've seen my fair share of movie reactions, and this by far was the most enjoyable one I've ever seen!! You guys really know your stuff, and are obviously huge movie buffs, and it seems to me you might be film makers yourself, or either know how scenes and lighting and all that stuff works, which made it even better for me. After retiring a few years early, I recently started a small drone photography business to get me buy until my old man benefits kick in, so I've been watching every youtube video I can find on lighting, color grading, exposure settings, ND filtering, etc.. I just today learned what a LUT was...lol. Anyway, just subbed, can't wait to check out more of your guys content! Take Care.

Lindsay's journey in this movie is fantastic. She goes from strong and aloof and arrogant (all understandable) to at the end, strong and knowledgeable but gentle. It's like she learns that she doesn't have to compete with the men anymore and can be herself and still be respected.

My telltale it’s a Cameron film is the Blue tone all his early pics has. Plus the crazy practical effects he was pulling off in the 80’s .

I've been told that the bigger a ship is, the less it will be affected by waves in a storm. So to have a boat that size get tossed around, Fred has to be a severely massive Storm system. Although, I've never been on any ship at sea, so I just have to accept their word for it. Like as an example, a cruise ship would not be as stable as an aircraft carrier would on rough waters. I guess it makes sense though, bigger ships mean heavier mass, which require more force to destabilize them.

*CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND!* I can't help but giggle at your amazement at the technology in filming. LOL. Have a look at Close Encounters of the Third Kind from 1977 by Stephen Spielberg with Richard Dreyfus. It came out a year after I was born. My father's favourite movie. So as soon as VHS came out, it was the first movie he bought. And 1989 wasnt that long ago when it comes to movie makng technology. LOL. The Never Ending Stroy. The Fly. Poltergeist. Labyrinth. The Dark Crystal. Beetlejuice. Back to the Future. ET. Tremors. Ghostbusters. Even The Psoeiden Adventure in the 70s. Lots of amazing, awe inspiring movies.

If you’re interested in learning more about the making of this film, there’s a podcast called ‘What Are You Doing Movie’ that has a commentary that accompanies the special edition of ‘The Abyss’ which I highly recommend watching. The podcast, which unfortunately no longer updates, is a collection of movie commentaries by people in the movie biz, giving their opinions on various movies. One of the commentators was the lead puppeteer on ‘The Abyss’ and has a lot of background info on the making of this film.

The behind the scenes for this movie is even more impressive than the film itself. So worth watching. They spent months under water filming. The actors have actual PTSD from the experience.

The Abyss in cinema was AMAZING. At the time, had no idea whatsoever what it was going to be about, knew it was underwater but it that was it. Grips you from the start and just… escalates. I rented the VHS of this movie 100 times, still one of my top 10 of all time. Peak Cameron.

I'm so glad you guys are watching this movie. I love it so much. It's a great memory for me of going to the theater to watch It with my mom. I remember feeling slightly Claustrophobic with some of the underwater scenes.😅 But it's really masterful and remains one of my favorite movies about extra terrestrial (or should I say extra oceanic) life. The special effects still hold true to me and I love the acting from everyone in it.

From what I understand (and there is likely more involved than my explanation), a submarine's bouey is all the active comms from up until the moment it's lost. Kind of like if you record a call and things get life threatening, you send out everything that's been recorded up until the send off.

It’s not mentioned in the movie, but Bud’s wedding ring was custom made from titanium. (Lindsey had it made to symbolise their marriage as super-strong). On the DVD subtitles, there was a url, to a website that made/sold titanium jewellery. The url no longer works, but the company is still in business, last I heard. Oh, and because of the chemicals in the toilet; Bud’s hand (and ring finger) are permanently stained, blue.
