The funny thing about these is, back in the day, you could rock out a virus (or Nord Modular) and a sampler and you never felt like you needed anything else. One of the hidden strengths of the virus is the multitimbrality (which I've seen few people use). You basically have a whole room of synths at your fingertips. I've always said, as you noted in the video, if you are using a Virus TI, there is little you will miss about a modular system. There is just so much you can do it's truly limitless as far as sound design is concerned. You will never be wanting some feature that is missing, there is so much to explore. Going back to the mid-to-late 90s, we have to give credit to Access (along with Nord and Doepfer) for bringing about the revival of analog synthesis and a return to front panel knobs, as opposed to the display + keypad + menu-diving format that reigned (but God Bless Kurzweil anyways). The Nord Lead preceded the Virus by a few years, but it was truly the original Access Virus that "infected" a new generation of artists with a love for analog-style subtractive synthesis.

or sample modular, buy Virus and Rytm, sell modular and be ready for anything. I think that a Virus, Rytm and sampler like a Roland SP 404 MK2 or Octatrack and laptop are really all that is needed for live and studio music.

Multitimbrality is the main thing pushing me toward Virus TI Polar over an Iridium Core for the same price. The thought of having 8 separate tracks sequenced by OT, then having even more I could do at the same time on Deluge or something else is mind blowing. I'm surprised so few people utilize this amazing feature. Just curious, Can you custom group the audio outs - like send 4-8 tracks out of one stereo out and another 8 out of another?

Great demo! Every word is true! I just got a used ti2 with keyboard. Had it for a few weeks and I just cant believe how good it is. Its like every random tweak sounds amazing and fits easily in the mix. Its wierd! It feels like cheating or magic. I sold some eurorack modules to finance it and its probably the best trade I ever did. Using the multimode and sequencing with a pyramid is just insane. Up to 16 parts, one midi channel each makes me feel like my GAS is permanently cured!

"Yeah!" Loved your enthusiasm, while showing off the Virus - even amongst the Quantum and modular synths you have! it would have been nice if you showed off more patches, but it was good to hear a few at the 31 minute mark. I also use mine exclusively as a hardware unit. I don't use the TI aspect. It cracks me up when people bag on that aspect, as if you can't use it as the amazing synth that it is. Great video and overview!

that is the key to enjoying the synth as TI is broken software. I did get the ipad touch app to work well with my new Virus TI2 that makes life 100x easier to change mod matrix and settings easily on the ipad. Kemper Access Music really needs to get off their lazy butts and hire these developers!

On multi-timbrality: the fact that you can have 16 separate parts running simultaneously, each with independent effects chains blows my mind. PLUS the highly sculptable 3band EQ and manipulation of stereo field per part means that each part can sit clearly defined without muddying the mix. The Virus A desktop was the first synth ever to stop me dead in my tracks back in 2002. MANY lesser more affordable synths later, I bought a TI2 in 2019 and have been selling off my other gear since. Truly a sound designer/explorer’s dream. PS PLEASE MAKE THAT EXTERNAL AUDIO VIDEO XOXO THANKS

Great review! I have a Snow and have had A and B. Love them for many reasons, although usually have a hard time to place them in the mix. Viruses take a lot of room in the mix. That's why I got a Snow instead of the big one, cos 4 tracks is already too much if you use it with more gear. Also a great add on to the Digitone. Portability is the other reason. I don't use the plugin except for patch management, and the Snow UI is not that difficult to use giveng the tiny footprint. A Virus is something everyone oughtta have, either TIs or the classic ones, all are great.

Nice walkthrough. I could go on and on about mine but I guess just one story real quick. I have lots of homemade patches I've done over the years, slowly replacing the factory trace stuff. Some of it is neat but when I've made a library of patches, the thing gets more personal and under my control I guess. Anyway, I made this patch called BOOOM. It's an explosion sound effect. It was just another happy accident like you are showing here a bit. I don't know how I made it but it's the loudest thing I have in my room. It doesn't even clip. It does this digital destruction with a ducking thing. It sounds huge. It's like a bomb going off. I still can't believe it. How can it be so loud, not clip and still have this interesting character even in this fit of maximize violence? Something about the Virus DSP is just magic. I thought all wavetable was like this and everything I've run into is a let down. I like the Waldorf stuff and it's very close but it just doesn't do everything the Virus does. I really hope they make a TI3 someday. The Kyra was right there. Idk what happened.

Great vid. Been using Access since the Virus B, which was a thrasher of a synth. I was able to do some amazing vocoder tracks using the Virus C and am still puzzled as to why it's like some kind of secret that it's capable of it. Looking to see how the Polar TI does, in that respect. But... question: what rack system are you using? I love how it's spread out and not simply cascading with everything on top of each other.

The workflow so to play live with it is also the secret weapon, in my mind, as i see you play, comparing with some machines i've already have fun with... All in a box ! Great demo! Sounds are amazing and I'm thinking of adding Virus to my setup by myself too, but I'm doubting about couple of aspects which I haven't found good answers to, yet: 1) how well does the multi timbral capability work in reality (approx how many different sounds at once it can play without overloading)? I want to stay mostly hardware only with my creations so would it serve well enough for multiple concurrent tunes in one hardware box, or would it run out of power rather quickly for that? Example: bass, leads and pad at once. 2) is there anything to worry about discontinued software support? I'm not planning to use it via USB as VST most of time anyway but you need at least some software connectivity for loading/saving patches and such?
