I think the stiffness and the stand-offishness of the Jedi is the point? The attitude and stance of the Jedi Order is ripped straight out of kinda generic Buddhism 101. Humans suffer. They suffer b/c they desire things. They desire money. They desire people. They desire power. If you remove that desire, you remove the suffering. And if you remove that desire, you can be clearer in your decision making b/c you don't have it clouding your judgement (and, as the Sith Code goes, it leans completely into the opposite direction, of course; you lean into your passion, into your desires, into your ambitions). I mean, I think most/all of us know this? But, I guess I'm surprised every time people seem surprised by how the Jedi behave?

Kristian made a great point. A show that cost $180 million you gotta start hot. I wish they would switch up their release model and have 10-12 FULL episodes. It just seems like they handcuff themselves and play it safe. There's no epic or grand scale feel like a house of the dragon and especially for a show of that budget.
@OrionInSpace5 ай бұрын
If you listen to what John Campos said yesterday about it, he brought up a great point. I think the idea of how much a budget is utilized for a show like this for example can also really come down to you as a filmmaker shoot it by the scale of its budget. The Acolyte visually feels like an $180 million show but it’s being shot like it’s on a smaller budget. John mentioned the idea that there are ways that shots are framed that make it look smaller than it probably should be and don’t show the actual scale of the world.

Hey Kristian love the show! I tried a different approach this time with their shows. Like you I was waiting years for this to come out but this time I didn’t watch trailers outside of the first one. I didn’t go looking for reviews, or tv spots or dig for articles that would have bolstered my expectations like it did for kenobi. So I went into the show not knowing very much. I wanted to love the series but after 2 episodes I was like meh. It wasn’t terrible but it’s also not a show I’ll rewatch down the road either. Biggest issue SW has today is that when Lucas ran it, it was about the story and he did it his way, the way he wanted it told and if it made a fortune that was a bonus. A New Hope almost didn’t happen due to budget and yet it’s one of the most successful movies of all time in my opinion. Today’s SW Disney cares more about the profit and the story is secondary and it shows. The franchises is getting pulled in 30 directions with too many visions and it’s not working. SW is surviving because of the name not the stories today. Outside of a couple of hits they haven’t really done anything exciting. I’m 50 so I’ve grown up with it from the start not during the sequel times. Thoughts? Thanks for the content!! Amazing work!!

But man let me tell you when i finished watching both of the Acolyte episodes with my girlfriend we loved it! I enjoy ALL of the characters, the world, the music and the story. Yes it was predictable (it was alreasy speculated that she was a twin before the show)but they spoon fed all the info to you because thats not the mystery, the nystery is what did the jedi do that a master would take the barosh vow and then kill himself? I read most of the high republic books but not the recent stuff yet and itl really liked the subtle nods they made like Yord and Vanestra being stoic and dogmatic. They are respresentations of what the jedi become in the prequels, as they get more involved in politics and move from peacekeeprs to lapdogs of corrupt politicians. Yord was so quick to reach for his saber and start a fight compared to the older Jedi Sol and Indara who never used there sabers and showed much more emotion and compassion (Sol trusting Osha about her dead sister) I just am really into this show.and to me man, it sounds like you need a break from starwars and focus on other content you enjoy more otherwise youll just end up watching starwars with the expectation that itll be bad and then will only look for flaws, idk you of course but just something I noticed and hope that starwars will one day excite you again as this show isnt the one thats doing it for you. I wanted to weigh in because there were a lot of great points in this episode. In terms of fandom I'm somewhere in the middle where I don't love everything Disney has done with Star Wars but there's been things I've genuinely liked. Kristian was spot on in that the last time we as a fanbase were on the same page was season one and two of The Mandalorian. Season Two was almost four years ago. Think about that for a second. In four years we haven't had anything for all of us to get excited about. Everything has been middle of the road at best. After a while you just get tired of it because you know what you're gonna be in for: A show that should focus on one aspect but pivots to the next. Filler episodes. A little too much fan service, and the arguments. One side is gonna hate everything with the other is gonna label you an "-ist" if you don't love it immediately. Sadly the Acolyte is no different. And I don't see it changing any time soon. It's gotten to the point where I might bow out soon. It's exhausting and what they've churned out isn't worth going through this new pattern. I think we should watch things we enjoy rather than hate watching (which I never understood) or not enjoying something but sticking it out to see if it eventually gets better. There's other shows out there that deserve our attention and time.

My issue is that the High Republic era was built on and heavily advertised as this is the era where the Jedi live up to all the legends and expectations that Obiwan told Luke about. Knights of Truth and Justice in the galaxy, and yet in the first live action show set in this era the Jedi seem no different than those in the prequel era. I feel like the show is going to continue down the route of “the Jedi aren’t who you think they are and they’re not as good as they believe”. Which is the same drum Disney/Lucasfilm has been banging on for every era and every movie/show. It’s like I get wanting to subvert what is known or be a deconstruction of how Star Wars is viewed but if that’s all you do it’s no longer subversion and it just ruins the original. Example I’m tired of dark,gritty,evil Superman I just want to see the blue Boy Scout, that’s how I feel about the Jedi. Can I just get a character like Luke trying to do good as best he can without being some example or metaphor for oppression, corruption or military/religious zealotry.

Why would you cast a taekwondo black belt (Manny Jacinto) to play a bit of a buffoon poison-maker who can "get us off this planet" (emphasis on us), knows where the wookie is (on a jungle planet). Now think about the kind of scenery/environment we see the jedi face this sith in the trailers (spoiler: jungle). TLDR Manny Jacinto is the sith.

I SURPRISINGLY liked it so far. Andor is the only Star Wars I’ve loved since Rogue one, but this show I feel has the most POTENTIAL out of everything we’ve gotten recently. Fight choreography is top tier, actors are actually showing emotions, sets and everything look great…….. the down side is we’re a quarter of the way in and we’ve only had an hour with these characters. If each episode was able to spend an extra 10-15 minutes to dive more into the characters I actually think this would be great. The writers not only have to write ALL new characters, but they also have to make a strong compelling story, yet each episode is short as shit so they truly limited the quality this show could have hit.

This just makes me even more excited for the DCU shows now. I really think that James Gunn is going to have his creatives put their all into the DCU shows and that the DCU shows are going to hit much harder and be more exciting to casual fans than the recent Marvel & Star Wars shows and because of that it will force Disney to put a little bit more work into crafting their stories for fear of being left behind. A sort of rising tide raising all ships. If the DCU can hit like Fallout S1, House of the Dragon & Last of Us it will do much more for Marvel/Star Wars than Deadpool 3 can long-term

I think starting the show with a flashback to what actually happened, like why Mae wants to kill these four Jedi, then the whole context and tone of the show would be so much better. Right now, we have no idea why they are being hunted, or if what they did was all that bad, so there's not a lot of tension, it's just like "oh ok this is happening." If we knew what happened up front, we'd be having the internal debate of who's right, who's justified and it would be a lot more tense and dramatic. And this way, we would have gotten to know Indara more before she was killed?

Don’t understand why he stands out so much lol. I really enjoy hearing the Jedi converse with each other (on Coruscant) and discuss some of their philosophies on overcoming emotion and avoiding the need for revenge. That’s the kind of stuff George wrote about and it’s my favorite part of Star Wars.
@martfp885 ай бұрын
Here are my predictions for the plot: Why is Mae looking for vengeance? : the Jedi had a vision of her being a powerful sith in the future and made the decision to kill her (attempt to), or something along those lines. This is like what Luke almost did against Kylo. I think Mae will die, but not before planting the seeds of doubt across jedis, making some of them turn to the dark side (or maybe just one)... Basically showing that Maes Master used her for this purpose, because the fight against the Jedi is not about a direct confrontation but slowly make them rotten.

Rando thoughts: *Floaty/Meditation/Guilt-Complex Torbin/Torben(?) What I wanna know is how in the hell did he get those horrifying scars on his face and why bacta didn't fix him? Hasn't talked to anyone for -what did they say?- 10 or 15 years. Holy shit. While we're on it, holy crap, those "local yokel" Jedi at that temple? Damn.... *Re: Sol and "everyone" liking him and comparing him to Qui-Gon....They two don't feel the same to me; not really. I can see why people would draw a comparison where Sol (and he uses the very word, "faith") believes in and advocates for Osha when QG does roughly similar things for wee Anakin, but past that, I see in Sol more uhhh, more warmth. Sol is what OB1 should have been to keep Anakin from the dark side. He's a more caring figure to me. Qui-Gon was somehow more majestic or some shit like that, less down-to-earth. *Sol had that line, tho: about the enemies of the Jedi who might capitalize on some kind of media cluster-f if it became known that a former padawan was knocking off Jedi, like that would be scandal; he was responding and agreeing with Venestra Rho's reasoning. Okay, fine: I wanna know more about that. I wanna know more about who the enemies of the Jedi are at this point in the supposedly peaceful era of the Republic. *Yord. Okay? Yord Fandar. Damn mofos, get it right. For me, dude started out flatter than an old dusty carpet; felt exactly like all the talking d-bags in the Jedi Council during the Prequel Trilogy. I'm softer on him now then I was at the very beginning not because I think he's any more interesting to listen to talk (he's not) but because it's obvious he's kinda perceptive and he has some integrity. Good for him........and then, later on, Kristian says they feel just like the Ep1 Jedi. Boom. That's right. *Osha's on the outer hull of the Neimodian bucket with that other dude and they're doing work. When the fire started, I literally yelled at the screen, "where the EFF are the astromech droids?!" It was nice for me that the show straight away addressed that little detail. Was it an important thing? Nahhh. Did it help me to think to think to myself that Ms. Headland cared enough about SW that she'd dot her i's and cross her t's? Yeah; Absolutely. On the flipside, that in a galaxy as big as that one it, that the Jedi could mistakenly track down Osha in less than two or three days made me irrationally angry enough that it almost killed the series for me? Uhhhh, yeah, almost. I know that I'm being a total idiot, here, but that's how I felt. People will say, "yeah, dude, but Headland and crew were under serious time and pacing constraints and they had to get the plot rolling. They had to get Osha and the Jedi into close contact, etc. right away." I would respond, "really, they had to? Why not tell a slightly different story without this crappy unrealistic and forced thing?" I dunno, maybe I'm spoiled by Andor. F you, Tony Gilroy!!!! :) *Mando S1 and 2 were pretty good. I still have 'em on my HD now. Everyone likes to talk about them like they were some kinda benchmark for "uniting the fandom." Okay, sure; whatever. I thought they were good, honest, I did. But they weren't Empire Strikes Back good; not even. Andor was that good. *Re: The money going to visuals: I saw SW in the theaters in 1977. SW has been in my life since I was a five year old kid. I can absolutely see a mat painting now when I couldn't when I was a kid or, I could, but I didn't care. I didn't care. I didn't care. I know why the volume was created; I know exactly why: primarily because highly reflective surfaces look way way more realistic and become easier to do when they can reflect the ambient environment AND, because lighting looks way better when the ambient environment light colors match up with what what the rest of t he production team are trying to do in terms of setting. Don't believe me? Don't cry about it, ask a vfx pro or a game industry artist and STFU. That being said, the production could have saved a small amount of money by not featuring Neimodians. Their Neimodian-ness was cool but didn't serve the story. They were just eye candy. *Humor: "Can you give me a hand?!!!" *Oh so convenient that Osha and Mei/May have the same hairstyle. Not in any way realistic but makes it more believable that the yokel bartender and the Jedi actually believe that Osha is the perp. *Jacinto/Qimir is def not just a clever and talented drunk and d-bag. We see aspects of this reality twice: He very briefly uses competitive martial arts vs. Mei/May for a few seconds when he has to. Second, he figures out Osha isn't Mei/May in less then 45 seconds; "you look just like her." So, not only possessed of uncommon physical prowess, but also very perceptive AND capable of dealing with surprise and stress with balance and aplomb. At least as perceptive as the Jedi. Great under pressure. The Jedi were ALL up in his grill and he acted exactly as he should have: like a rube; freaked out and 100x out of his depth. Ohh, y'all get into this very thing, later. :) *Osha fire's the stun weapon and misses wide on purpose. Mei/May rolls out of the scene immediately. Both sisters showed remarkable control under stunning and high-pressure circumstances. What would you do if you found out that a sibling you absolutely loved was not only alive but also, on the other side from you? How would you react? * If t hey focus on "the sister thing" it makes avoiding continuity/canon conflict easier to avoid. Headland doesn't have to make a liar out of Ki Adi Mundi. *Steve "the hair" Harrington is not dead. * Re: Turns.....If there's a "turn," Mei/May AND Osha at the same time, will both run away. They "good" sister AND the "bad" sister will leave the chessboard. together. *As bad at Ep8 tLJ was, Ep9 RoS was considerably worse. At least the Last Jedi was trying to be something kinda sophisticated and interested. It failed in a lot of aspects, but it was trying. Rise of Skywalker was undoubtedly THE crappiest piece of canon SW media ever created. Both seasons of Resistance were better and most of your subscribers probably don't even remember what I'm talking about. *On "coming back swinging," People were totally fine with MacGregpr as OB1 and Glover as Lando, but they hated Ehrenreich as Solo. Why? For the same reason that a cover band won't have to deal with shit from the fandom if they do a really good job. When Baylon Skol gets recast, the fans will be totally okay with it if whoever looks REASONABLY right (the fans will be forgiving about this part) and is really good. If he's not good, he'll get crucified because Stephenson was excellent and has established expectations and woah to the sorry bastard who fails. Fans will forgive and accept when shown excellence. House of the Dragon S2 (I'm not watching) is probably no exception. If you can get about 75-80% of any fandom to buy in? Yeahhh, you're good. If not, you're going to attract the usual gaggle of opportunistic and clever social media dipshits making bank off of disrespect. *On growing out of Star Wars: Lucas was recently at Cannes, right? He said stuff. The Old Man was a Cannes, right?" He reiterated that SW was a kids story. That's the story he wanted to tell, and (mostly) tell it, he did. Now, we have Andor, (and snippets off other canon shit) that really do feel grown up. This makes sense because you have fans, like me, who are now in their 50s or older. Kids are only kids for a short time. Adults are adults for much longer. What if the SW canon was to shift to an adult focused "story/universe/franchise" with generous open hands extended to kids instead what we have now which is the other way around. I'd bet Steff would be a lot happier. Like, what if uhhh, what was her name? Petunia Dursely? What if she actually said, "fuck the Empire?" *Okay, I'll watch Dark Matter. I wasn't going to, but I will now. *Mei/May isn't all that good; she's athletic and fancy which makes her fun to watch. Indara (who she gets with a cheap shot) and Sol both make her look like a loser. For that matter, so does scarface Torben. Aw yeah, you guys totally get it. :) *On The Book of Bobba Fett as a gangster story: This is repeat of the previous issue where SW is still seen by the great media powers of the world as a kids thing more than an adult thing with Andor being the exception AND THE ONLY REASON Gilroy got away with that is because he made something so good that Disney couldn't say no. If you flip that, THEN you free up Rodriguez to have made B of BF as an actual gangster story. SW has an issue right now where a significant portion of its fanbase, myself included, are way WAY past childhood. We want things we're usually not getting. Sometimes, we're don't mind that much, sometimes we mind a whole lot. The other thing with this particular show that the fans are kind of expecting, particularly given Ms. Headland's rhetoric about the story giving lots of time and focus to the Sith is the challenge of how to make the bad guys protagonists while not making them particularly sympathetic. SW has almost never had interesting bad guys. The Empire villians were mostly carboard and the First Order douches were even worse (F you, JJ, you lousy hack; you messed up Star Trek AND SW) for instance, pretty much the only time Palpatine was interesting was the opera house scene in RotS. But the trouble with making the bad guys interesting and maybe sympathetic is that you make the entire story more realistic and "murkey" in its morality and ethics; more like a classic novel. THAT can't really be done well in a "kid's story" format unless a bunch of creators are absolute geniuses.

Overall, I’m not impressed so far, but willing to ride it out for a bit longer because Sol is giving me all I need really. One minor nitpick: I don’t like hearing phrases like “Go get Lunch” and “What the Hell” in Star Wars. There were more examples than that, but that dialogue Feels very ~earthy~.

I think it is time to take a step back from Star Wars and revisit it when there's something to talk about. I watched the first two episodes last night and I agree with most criticisms out there on social media. For a show that's supposed to be taking place at the end of the high republic era it doesn't feel like the high republic. Disney is so afraid to make more adult related content like Andor and this just opens them up to more criticism down the road.

I thought it was ok. Action was pretty decent but the dialogue and editing are a bit off at times. I think my biggest hang up over the show is that I don't quite get why they chose this instead of finally starting to adapt some of the High Republic novels. The conflict with the Nihil is such a fascinating change of tone and pace yet it feels like they're afraid to even mention outside of minor easter eggs.

I know folks may take this the wrong way, and this is just a thought, I mean no disrespect...but I feel like The Acolyte would have been better served as a High Republic novel (which I would certainly read) rather than a Disney Plus series. To Kristian's point, it is a big gamble to put so much money (170 million ) on a series that is so clearly and intentionally created with one person's vision and ideology. It is then just natural to have a strong opposition to that vision which could turn people off. I know creating a novel and creating a TV series are two different things, but books give a lot more room for vast explorations of ideas and concepts within the established world, and I would presume they cost a lot less to make (I could be wrong). That being said, I plan to see the show through, again, just a thought. I am by no means tying to dismiss the show or anything just curious if anyone shares the same sentiments. Kristian. I love your show, your channel, your content, your guest hosts. I’m a big fan of it all. This show has serious issues with writing, pacing, and characterization. Those are issues with creative NOT the actors. But come I man…”forced casting”. What does that mean? Why is it that when there is a small number of white dudes it’s Star Wars for a niche audience?! Why? You’re telling me if you replace all the actors with white ppl and had the same direction, acting, and writing it’s suddenly Star Wars for everyone? Kristian the problem isn’t the faces. It’s the material they’re given which is completely independent of if they’re white or black or whatever. I sub to you and NOT those other guys because that kind of talk is never your go to. You’re concerned with the quality, not the ppl’s ethnicity. But that comment really bothered me. Who cares if the one white dude is the guy who drinks the poison? The one black man in EMPIRE betrayed his friends and sold out the heroes to the villain for cash. You don’t see me whining about how Lando is bad black representation….

Look at this show like Affirmative action - a very necessary step toward equality in education In an effort to fill a certain amount of diversity, affirmative action might have been taken in order to fill a quota of rolls. There might not yet be a large enough pool of actors to pull from. They also may have overbalanced in their zeal. That is ALL Christian is saying.
@writingref5 ай бұрын
This is a touchy subject. The anti-woke crowd is so prominent as a division and instigators of social war that its impossible to have a meaningful conversation about diversity because of them. So - do the oppressed and the marginalized sometimes become the oppressor? I would say yes, but it is incorrect when the privileged and ignorant say "reverse racism" Christian is obviously far removed Does one black guy in Empire mean we now make sure we have only one white guy? No. Nor is this show doing that. Its relatively well balanced with diversity and has people of color taking the lead, but there is a danger in trying to overcompensate that makes a universe or world feel designed rather than real An example i often point to is the all lady ghostbusters vs the young adult ghostbusters You could have done a terrific all lady ghostbusters - but it turned Bill murray and every male in that movie into a joke
