The third episode of the Acolyte has an abrupt ending. We go from a casual argument between siblings, to first degree murder and the massacre of an entire witch coven. The thing is we only see the events on Brendok from the eyes of Osha, and although she's an objective observer, she was also stuck in a maintenance shaft and therefore is unreliable. We theorize what actually happen on that fateful day with some color commentary from our editor Congo.

Did she, though? Sol tells us not to believe our eyes. She burned the book, then Osha turned away and when Osha turned back the whole doorway (a lot of dense wood) was burning at a good clip. I could be wrong, but right now I don't think Mae started the fire.

I mean it kinda seems pretty clear that the whole episode is shown almost solely from Osha's perspective with the smallest scenes focusing on either wide shots to establish the area or to give us some context from mother Aniseya's perspective. So to me it seems like this episode shows Osha's memory of her time at the fortress and her recollection of the jedi visiting and the slaughter of her mothers. To an eight (?) year old "Your sister started a fire and then the fortress burnt down" sounds pretty logical, especially seeing as she was scared and angry at her sister at the time, and watched Mae set a fire. I have no idea why people had such an issue with this episode besides the standard "woman bad" reasons ngl, I thought it was great and gave us a good insight into Osha's memory of her past

Two more things are, that Mae gets to the tree in the end because she knows that if Osha is missing, she has to look there. And she looks extremely distressed when Osha is not there, so its unlikely she really wanted to kill Osha, at least not in any way that is beyond some strong childish emotions like everyone of us has. The second thing with Torbin is, that its actually terrifying in how quickly it happens. And there is no warning sign, no chanting, words, spell or even gestures. He just in a second completely disembodies and falls on his knees in a posture that looks weirdly like a trance of even like he is worshipping something or someone. And the way he snaps out of it suggests that he completely blanked in those moments and maybe wasn't even concious. And as far as we can tell, the Jedi felt nothing during it, they had no warning from the force either.

Given this show is supposedly taking the 'Rashomon' (arthouse for 'non-linear') story-telling, I can guarantee there will be another flashback episode. Which will mean this show will have wasted 25% of the season on flashbacks instead of the actual present-day story. This sort of story telling just doesn't work well for Star Wars imo. The fact the show makes the people involved unlikable and the coven as obvious bad guys while trying to claim 'the Jedi are in the wrong' just makes the flashbacks seem unnecessary at best, actively harmful to the plot at worst (before episode 3 we could at least pretend the Jedi might be in the wrong. After showing what the coven was like... yeah no, Jedi good, power obsessed darksiders bad, this is the High Republic, purge the Sith wannabes.)

I think the problem was the Jedi were going to take the girls without the parents permission. In their mind they thought they were saving two kids from dark side witches. So like torn in said they “ thought they were doing the right thing. “ when instead they slaughtered a bunch of people who were trying to protect the children in their group. I doubt it will happen but would love it if osha finds out the truth at the end ,finishes Mae’s work and she ends up the acolyte.

I think the Jedi were in the area to pick up Osha so they were able to sense she was in danger when the fire started so they showed up to investigate. It possible the fire caused by Mae and the explosions are unrelated. Koral probably caused the explosions to rile up the coven to attack the Jedi, and when they arrived, I think they mind controlled Torban to attack the other Jedi which is how he got the scar. I think the reason Torban felt guilty is that from his perspective, as a padawan, they were there to help people, but their interference resulted in the death of an entire group of people. I think this would cause anyone with a conscious to feel guilty.

It kind of shocks me that people will call the abrupt ending 'bad writing'. If we get an ending with strange circumstances and unusual moments, we shouldn't jump to conclusions and use it as a criticism. It's an indication to take a step back and wonder what else could be going on. If the show continued on as normal, with this ending playing out exactly as we see it, that would be the time to criticize it. But I guess some people might be a bit to excited sometimes.

Jedi would not tolerate the existence of a darkside cult [their rhetoric/attitude toward the Jedi might as well say 'we're bargain-bin Sith!' in neon letters], the fact the coven's solution of 'let's just have the children lie to the Jedi instead of killing them using our Thread powers!' (despite one of the witches SUGGESTING just that), the fact the Jedi are so passive after Torbin is straight-up violated with Force powers, the Force only coming into play when it seems convenient for the story... Osha was packing her bags, I didn't second guess Sol's closeness thinking he might have been there to collect her anyway. My current thoughts are: • Koril and some witches confronted the Jedi to orevent Osha leaving. • The Jedi confronted the witches about the twins, foreshadowed by "if the Jedi learn *how* you made them" • Darth Smiles has been drawn here early, like the Jedi were, and was manipulating events (Mae even?) behind the scenes, culminating in this moment. I think they are going for a rashomon type thing but i don't think they pulled it off skillfully enough. For instance in the flashback we have too much info of scenes that osha never saw or heard for it to be just her pov. That said there is obviously info we don't have about what the jedi did and how the witches died. My initial thought was that the witches poisoned themselves in a cult way. Not sure what the jedi were doing...maybe they were sabotaging the generator thing and got caught?

What probably happened is that Sol sensed Osha was in trouble, and when the Jedi showed up a fight broke out, with the witches being super aggressive and the Jedi acting quickly to take the witches out because of the previous possession. The witches are the aggressors in this whole situation, and the Jedi seemed like the reasonable ones. And Osha agreed to take the test, which includes taking the blood sample, so she does, indeed consent to him taking her blood.

Torbin, Telnacca and Sol being padawan at the time makes me wonder how they [all relatively young] managed to reach Jedi Master in only 16 years from being Padawan. Edit: Torbin is the only padawan of the group, but even the promotion from Knight to Master in 16 years during an era of 'peace' is still suspicious and may have been a reward for cooperation and remaining silent under Master Indara.

Maybe I need to rewatch, but I thought just Torbin was referenced as a padawan. Assuming Sol and Telnacca are knights at this time. Torbin might be right at the end of his training too. Though it's still a pretty quick set of promotion, maybe as referenced above its part of the corruption. Stay quiet and you all get to be masters.
@AmosDohms
@AmosDohms Ай бұрын
I could maybe see them getting promoted as part of the coverup, otherwise they wouldn't get to be masters that quickly. As the Order is in dominant, stale, and complacent position, you don't get promoted to master quickly, and for most Jedi, the only way to get there at all is going by the book and not rocking the boat. You might get to master quickly by playing a role in some important, heroic operation(or a coverup), but those will be very few and far between.

Do we actually know Telnaccas age and "service record"? Because if i remember correctly Wookies can reach several hundred years, so he might be more experienced than the rest of them and more deserving for the role. When I first saw the trailer for The Acolyte, I got interested because of the era it was taking place in. Now I'm excited to see how this murder mystery plays out. I think Koril had a role in the demise of her coven and I wouldn't be surprised if she survived and is Mae's ,Master. A lot can happen in that 16 year gap. As far as the reviews for the show. I'm ignoring them. They haven't seen the whole show so any negative review is a moot point. It's trendy to hate on Star Wars. Which is hilarious to me. Once again, Allen proves to be the voice of reason when it comes to digesting and reviewing content. As a lifeling fan of this franchise (I'm 28) and as someone that has been bitten in the arse several times in my life due to lack of patience, it's important to view something in it's entirety before passing judgement. There are tons of plot holes that seem deliberate in episode 3. Many things aren't matching up. It brings many aspects of previous lore into question, and I am honestly intrigued. I'm hoping this and future Star Wars projects end up like Andor. Providing the same level of storytelling, understanding of the source material, clever writing and world building. Andor also featured strong characters, story and philosophy all the while maintaining diversity. The characters all felt like real people. I think everything comes down to good writing, and an engaging story. If anything, Disney should give their directors and writers a FAR larger window to write, develop amd film these movies and shows. Give them more time to sit on the story and cook up something phenomenal. Anyways, thanks for your videos Allen! Keep em coming!

You get a like cause you have well thought out videos but I don’t think I can agree really about episode 3. Now that’s not to say it all wasn’t intentional because it very well could be but another chosen one well 2 seems sloppy and just points to how fanatical force users in general can be … does every force group get there own chosen one ? Was anakin the jedis and we have yet to see the sighs and these 2 are the witches chosen one or ones … is everyone now suddenly the chosen one like video games used to do … we open the story with you the chosen one this nameless holy prophesied warrior of something ? In either case we don’t have enough information and I do think they did purposely withhold and splinter the narration so to speak. Also good ole one eye was still a teen by the look of him and in only 16 years was it 10 of which he was a mute he became a master somehow. That feels really rushed and hasty … 6 years to go from padawan to knight to master cause let’s bare in mind the 10 years of meditation he wasn’t trying to rank up in the Jedi army unless they were like you know what he been napping for like 6-8 years now why not he a master yeahhhh he won’t even know it and we can cast his vote however we want right am I right free plus one vote for whatever we wantttttt ….. also another question I have is where is kids in all of this too set 100 years before the prequels ok so then yoda is like what 700 years old say 500 even is he a complete nobody ? There are a lot of things not adding up … I mean sure they could be doing the justice league thing but I dunno really I smell something fishy somewhere

I definitely think (and thought at the time) that the whole scene showing the witches dead was suspicious. None of them are burned so it can’t be that a fire swept through. Mae could have done something using that whole “power of many” thing they talked about. Like maybe it gave her the ability to steal their life force or something. It’s also possibly Mother Koril’s doing, and I don’t remember seeing her among the dead like we did Aniseya. She may have survived or she may have saved Mae OR told her what to do. Or it could have been something where the Jedi where provoked into fighting. Many possibilities. But you also got me thinking about something. Is it possible that “Mae” IS Osha (or vice versa) and tgst thry e always been the same person but one is some sort of Force projection? Could we have a weird Fight Club situation here?

The issue with how people consume their media nowadays is that they treat TV shows like movies. If their questions aren't all answered by episode two, then that means the writing is bad and the show is terrible. Nobody allows themselves to be confused, they don't want to wait, they want all of the answers and they want them now. I myself have done that in the past with some shows, and it's a problem. TV and episodic storytelling is not meant to be consumed or treated like movies.
