This has to be by far one of the scariest film's I've seen. Here we have someone who has done despicable, unspeakable things without remorse, and should be brought forward to a UN tribunal. And here he is, walking the streets like a respected citizen, given the chance to show his atrocities in all their glory as if it were no big deal. The fact that this person actually exists and is willing to present what he did is unflinchingly terrifying.

@agus joharudin Propaganda or not, communism always leads to a deplorable outcome and should be condemned EVERYWHERE. However, that doesn't justify what happened in Indonesia

I don’t think most people feel it’s not a big deal. Does ending one more life make it better? I don’t believe it does. But the knowledge of such possibilities can perhaps remind us of why it is important to value peace and respect one another.

Worth noting: Research and declassified documents demonstrate the Indonesian authorities committing the anti-communist purge killings received support from foreign countries such as the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

"War crimes are defined by the winners." You can do anything and never be convicted, blamed, as long as you are so powerful you can't lose. You write the moral code. No matter what you do, you own the world's media, and thus all public perceptions, and can be hailed as HERO...no matter what you do.

One big question most of us have is if was this an attempt for Amwan to redeem himself? Or if he actually wants people to see what he has done

The Act of Killing / Indonesian: Jagal, dirs. Joshua Oppenheimer, Christine Cynn and Anonymous. Haji Anif, Syamsul Arifin. The directors turn filmmaking on its head, is it a documentary, docufiction, or a surrealist black comedy nightmare? A unique portrait of the mass murder (genocide) of innocent people by thugs in service to a corrupt Indonesian government. In fact, the thugs parade themselves before the camera, with their own re-enactments apparently free from prosecution and an international court’s hangman’s noose. Bewildering. These crimes against humanity were tolerated by the United States and the United Kingdom. The film focuses on the perpetrators of the Indonesian Killings of 1965-1966 where killing was directed against the Communist community and up to a million people were killed. The Act of Killing won Best Documentary at the BAFTA Awards. “In accepting the award, Oppenheimer asserted that the United States and the United Kingdom have ‘collective responsibility’ for ‘participating in and ignoring’ the crimes…” (Wikipedia). One delusional gangster states, “Listen, if we succeed in making this film - it will disprove all the propaganda about the Communists being cruel. And show that we were cruel! - We’re the cruel ones.” Another gangster: “It’s not about fear. It’s about image. The whole society will say: ‘We always suspected it. They lied about the Communists being cruel.’ It’s a problem for us. It’s a problem for history.” Documentary. Denmark-Norway-England. European Film Awards: Best Documentary. Geneva International Human Rights FF: Gilda Vieira de Mello Prize. Human Rights Human Dignity IFF: Aung San Suu Kyi [Now disgraced, due to her tacit approval of the genocide of Rohingya ] Award. The 86th Academy Awards nominated The Act of Killing for Best Documentary Feature, but awarded the Prize instead to Twenty Feet from Stardom (Morgan Neville, 2013).

To understand where this horror came from, look to the West not the East. This savagery came from the calculations of Cold War warriors. Read Vincent Bevins book The Jakarta Method

The U.S. is guilty in big parts for letting Indonesia get away with this genocide. Thankfully history is now having its reckoning, and Indonesia must confront its past sin like Germany and many others have.
