Nice vid. Collection of my thoughts: - I think when viewing this year in a vacuum (not ignoring records and stuff but not being able to say "now she has 3 gold medals etc.") Tara is higher up on the pecking order than Nafi. - Chebet's cross country as I understand counts as "out of stadia" and so can't be considered, but I would also have her in the lead for track. Separating out of stadia and track is going to be why Sifan Hassan never wins one of these for the rest of her career :( - I think the WA points system isn't ideal (which they implicitly acknowledge by occasionally updating it in light of recent statistics, which is the best they can do I suppose), but I especially think that, for events that were previously underdeveloped, the point allocations are very uneven. For this reason, I'll look at them but not usually take them as gospel. I feel like I'd need more evidence for Alison Dos Santos' 400mH season's best really being better than the 800m WR besides the points system saying so, especially given that Rai said he didn't execute most of his races this year and was in 45 shape (which I genuinely believe)
@RunnerBoi
@RunnerBoi 2 ай бұрын
I think Tara is honestly another candidate that can just tie the others for 2nd. Thiam's heptathlons weren't to die for or anything compared to what the other women have done performance-wise, but they were still really freaking solid, especially given how delicate the heptathlon can be when it comes to anything above like 6700-6800 points. Ooh, you're right, I guess Chebet's XC win has to be omitted. I wonder how that would work then if she wins her category and is then considered for athlete of the year. Would a panel consider her XC win then? I guess they just stick within their original criteria to be consistent, but that would just feel so strange to just omit an entire world title when considering. Also yeah, I've generally considered the WA points system a little off here and there, but I do think the men's 400mh is genuinely *that* strong. It's always been a generally competitive event, especially with the way Edwin Moses revolutionized it, but the top 3 we have now are just on a different level given they occupy a comical amount of the top-50 all time marks.

You can’t use the barely raced argument against Sydney, but turn around and reward Rai for it
@RunnerBoi
@RunnerBoi 2 ай бұрын
@IiDHOPE Why not? Rai's competition for the track category wasn't as fierce, so it was a much easier decision to make. I also said that Syd basically ties Chebet for not just her category, but for even athlete of the year despite racing her main discipline 3 times.

Re M&F Field AotY, would've liked both lists expanded to 6 (to match the number of M&F Track AotY Noms) to include Camryn Rogers & Arshad Nadeem to highlight their achievements this yr with both awards going to Mondo & Mahuchikh given their Euro Champs Golds, OLY Golds & WRs despite Yaroslava's surprise Silver @World Indoors which unfortunately prevented her 'perfect season' unlike Mondo who won World Indoors. Re Female Track AotY, Beatrice Chebet literally being the only T&F Athlete to win 2 Individual OLY Golds in Paris (5/10K beating Faith in the process) plus her massive 10K WR @Pre Classic & XC WC Gold at the start of the season should give her a slight edge for the Award, but the public vote suggests Faith & Tebogo are currently running away with it! Too many ppl seem to be misremembering or conflating Faith's much stronger '23 season when she did the WC 1500/5K Double & set 3 WRs (1500/Mile/5K) with her '24 season! Even as a Gabby fan & with both winning 1 Individual OLY Gold each, Keely should've had that Nom instead having had the stronger season by staying unbeaten in her primary 800m event while Gabby lost a couple of her 200m races. Keely also ran an impressive 1.54.61 NR moving her up the notorious W800m all-time list to #6 just behind Semenya's 1.54.25 & Quirot's 1.54.44. Re Male Track AotY, don't feel comfortable giving it to Jakob despite his OLY 5K Gold & impressive 3K WR as he literally failed to medal in his primary 1500m event @OLY! Happy with Grant winning it given his impressive unbeaten indoor season (10yr streak) culminating in another indoor WC 60mH Gold & WR and unbeaten outdoor 110mH season up to Paris resulting in OLY Gold, most sub 13s ever & 4th fastest time in history. Lost twice post OLY but at least he continued to race compared to other nominees who immediately shut their seasons down after Paris! Honourable mention to Sifan Hassan after her OLY Gold (Marathon), Bronze (5K) & Bronze (10K) Triple in Paris plus 4th place in the Tokyo Marathon earlier in the yr. Very curious as to what the '25 season looks like for a 32yr old Sifan i.e. more or less focus on the track seeing as she's won 3 of her first 4 Marathons while still winning medals on the track at the same time?!

I truly do believe that Sydney should be 2nd in the athlete of the year standing, but I don’t like how the reasoning is because she doesn’t race often. She’s only doing what her coach says for her to do to avoid injuries and to remain in absolute peak shape for when it matters most. Because without that, I truly believe we wouldn’t see half the world records she’s produced let alone in the championships that she does them in if it weren’t for her conservative approach to keep herself healthy. Aside from that whole she broke 2 world records and beat the 200m Olympic champion at her own game, it is important to note Chebet ended on of the most dominant undefeated streaks of any athlete in track and field history by beating the middle distance queen at her own game, was the only track and field athlete to leave Paris with 2 individual golds, and had a world record of her own. Thus more, her resume based upon who she beat and her own individual success is what makes her on top

I agree with Sydney. She only ran 3 400m hurdles races that weren't preliminary round races, and set 2 world records in those 3 races. That is the epitome of efficiency. She was also the leading contributor of the US women's 4x400m relay that came within 0.1 seconds of a 3rd world record for her.
