Me too. best version is arcade of course. Genesis loses a lot of sprites, but the ones it has are crispier, the game is also way more responsive. SNES MK 2 has a very inconsistent input responsiveness. people say MK 1 played worse. No. MK2 is too inconsistent. There was a story I read about that the snes version was being developed for 32mbits then at the last minute nintendo decided that 24mbits was going to be the size and that the port had to be finished several weeks before the expected time, which obviously took a big hit on frames of animation and sound had to be heavily compressed, the music had already been done so gameplay took a hit with the compressions techniques for animation and sounds took computing resources. There was another version from sculptured that attempted to address some of these things but fell quite short as well. I still feel the magic of the arcade was better captured on the SNES, the comparison on these emulated captures don't have a fair comparison on how it looked when they were played on a CRT.

I played geneasis MK2 for years since childhood, managed to beat the game on 1 credit on hardest... just because of how responsive the controls are. Snes is terrible because Controls respond whenever they want. Its even worse than MK1, in mk 1 you had a consistent delay, in MK2 sometimes it's instant, sometimes it's delayed and in rare instances it doesn't respond, i just say another youtuber play it and it's not just me, sometimes he just couldn't pull off a fatality he can flawlessly on his arcade. the game ignores your inputs sometimes . Try the gensies version, beat it with any character, and then try the same with the SNES. Once you adapt to it's problems you may beat it. but you will find the Genesis version to be more responsive.

But it’s typical of Nerdtendo fans to place voice samples and colors over smooth and responsive gameplay.

I agree 100%! I would call it brainwash. Or programming if you wish. Even now, years later, I see people automatically claim every Nintendo's port being better because it was on Nintendo. Excellent marketing, that's all ;) Is everything Nintendo actually better than everything Sega? Definitely not! Of course, 2 years newer SNES is more “modern” and had better technical capabilities (more colors on screen, more hardware GFX effect and modern wavetable sound) but if we speak about “power” then the Sega Genesis is definitely more powerful than the SNES. The 68000 CPU and the real 16bit architecture used in the Sega Genesis definitely put the Sega hardware a magnitude above its competitor in term of raw power. The SNES uses the basic 8/16 bit 65816 CPU with a 8bit data bus and honestly we can easily see the difference between the 2 when you compare animation intensive games. Contra HC, Gunstar Heroes, Batman and Robin or Alien Soldier are games than you won’t be able to put on a SNES without reducing heavily the action / animation intensity. On many aspects, the Genesis outperforms the SNES, “common” display resolution is 256x224 on SNES while it’s 320x224 on Megadrive, DMA capacity is better on the Sega system as general sprite capabilities. Whole MK series is an excellent example that there were a lot of ports that were actually better on Genesis :)

I just played the Sega 32x port, and it's not bad, but it's horrible at the same time. Let me explain. Here is what the game has going for it. The Good - The round announcements, on point, arcade sound - some, not all sounds, were updated to sound more like the arcade. Uppercuts, round house attacks and uppercut sound when you are knocked off pit or into acid in dead pool. - some animations restored that the Sega genesis did not have - the life bars updated to have the character names in the life bar and updated to look more like the arcade version. - when you fight secret character, you actually go to goros lair and not a blue portal stage - Animation for floating character in background moves up and down and isn't floating still The bad - Graphics in stages are the same as the genesis port - multiple sounds from the genesis version are still present - many of the sounds from finishers are missing or still sound like the genesis port, not like arcade at all - frame drops happened a lot, gameplay not smooth as people claim and you can see missing sprites often - Forest stage has missing animation and no sounds from the trees - Music and animations are from genesis port and not close to the arcade when you are told that you are going to fight a hidden character. - Shang Tsung and his morphs are horrible, and his flaming skull projectile isn't even close to what arcade sounds like. - Kintaro has missing sounds from game that SNES and arcade have - Shao Khan has only one saying "You will die" That's it, compared to SNES and arcade having much more. - The ending where Shao khan dies is closer to arcade, but still not arcade Shao khan does not yell, no a few times before he dies - character ending is missing the correct images that arcade and SNES have. We know SNES is not the perfect arcade port, but aside from the hurt sounds that 32X has and the round announcement, kitana's fan sound. Life bars being correctly displayed. It is the closest port to the arcade. Play the SNES port and Arcade version. Then play the 32x port. You can clearly see the differences here. The SNES port had a lot of good and bad things going for it. Some sounds are from the arcade, and some are not just like the 32x port. It has goros stage and the sound effects in ways the 32x didn't have that also the arcade port had. I do not agree with the soundtrack for the genesis or 32x. I have found the soundtrack music to be similar to the arcade version more. They had their time and both had good and bad things going for them. Today we can play the arcade version at home no problem. Which version is better. Certainly not the older classic ports. They are great for nostalgia and that is where they should stay. The Arcade version tops them all 100%

Of course Arcade's original is the best but this video is about home ports ;) I have all three versions. I never see any slowdowns on Genesis or 32x versions, they both run smoother and faster than the SNES version. They both have better contrast, resolution and soundtracks (in my opinion). There was a period when SNES games seemed to look and sound good but over the time, SNES has aged worse than Genesis. SNES version soundtracks sound like underwater and graphics look stretched and washed out. Not only Mortal Kombat but most of the games have blurry graphics. I am sorry but this is what it is. I know we are talking about ports but I don't understand why everything needs to be exactly the same as the Arcade's original? I actually take Sega's approach as a bold move. They made a fantastic game that might be a little detached from the original but we are not comparing here which game looks and sounds closer to the Arcade's original. We are comparing which game plays, looks and sounds better ;)
@Binary_Deviant7 ай бұрын
@@Retroconsole Okay, you want to know why people compare Mortal Kombat II Home port to the Arcade Original? Let me see.... Because we fell in love with the game because of the Arcade Original. If not for the Arcade version that we all saw those many years ago. This game would not have sold so well, so a game that plays as good and sounds like the original arcade machine is what makes a great Home port. Why do you think the 32x tried it's hardest to match the arcade sounds as much as possible, why the names in the life bar look more like the arcade version and not generic? The Sega Genesis hardware was and will always be limited when you compare SNES and of course Arcade. Its audio chip was only capable of so many sounds, which is why the 32 x retained some sounds from the genesis port, why the graphics are similar to the genesis port. While the 32x could push more graphics it still relied on the genesis, it was not a stand alone. They worked together. The SNES was a stand alone and had most of the sounds and animation from the arcade. The SNES was a fantastic port for the time. Now, do not get me wrong. I will agree that after playing both versions the 32x port was fun to play and so is the SNES port, but yes There are very minor slow-downs in the SNES, but the 32x and genesis are frame skip and there are missing frames and makes it look choppy. The SNES port has more sounds and animations closer to the arcade, while the 32x has great sounds that if the SNES had, we would not be having this conversation. I would look at your video and laugh. So I give them both a tie. Just because the 32x has improved some sounds and some graphics doesn't make it better. I think they equal. Especially where there are so many missing animations that I remember from the arcade that should be there. Living forest has limited animations, and you do not hear the sound from the trees, for example. I can go on and on. Also look at the specs, The SNES is nearly on par with the 32x and handles its own. The genesis gets shit on by the SNES with power, performance, colors, and audio The genesis port shouldn't even be in this discussion.

You contradicted yourself. You know the arcade version is the best version, so of course back then everyone playing their console ported wanted the closest to arcade version. which would make it the best Home Port. 32x is highly impressive, and there are great things for SNES version. I like them equally. which is credit since before this video I would not have given 32x a shot since sega genesis version was so unplayable I would be offended even back then if I had to play it after playing the SNES version in 1994

@@Binary_Deviant You know it's all debatable right? Genesis ACTUALLY had more power than Super Nintendo. I agree, SNES could put more colors on screen simultaneously and had better audio chip, but Genesis had more powerful processor (blast processing) which allowed to handle sprites better. That's why we have so many fast paced games on Sega Genesis, that is why most of the fighting and sports games play better on Genesis. Genesis also had higher resolution. That is why Genesis version is in this debate. It just runs really really smooth. And that is what is the most important aspect of fighting games. Being fast, smooth and responsive. SNES at times gets clunky and unresponsive due to lack of power unfortunately. Maybe I was too harsh with SNES version of MK2. I know there are lot of people who just love the SNES version. That is also totally fine. We all have our preferences. But I think it's rather 50/50 nowadays. Half of the retro gamers actually prefer Sega's versions. Why? Because it has sharp sprites and some of the people actually choose fm synth over low bit midi (It's like comparing Vivaldi and Prodigy). What's not talked about often is the soundtrack. The Sega ports did NOT have some of the same music as the arcade. For example, the character select screen theme present in the arcade and SNES is completely missing. Instead, the Sega ports recycle the music from the Kombat Tomb stage as the character select theme. Also noteworthy is that while the instrumentation of the music may sound nice in the Sega ports, the music itself does not replicate the arcade soundtrack well. Just listen to the opening titles; the music in the Sega ports sound off, almost as if it's a completely different tune.
@Retroconsole4 ай бұрын
I get your point, but for me (and also many others) this is one of the best things about this Sega's ports. It's different. Visually different, soundtracks are different. You think it's a con that it's not exactly like Arcade's original, but many (like myself) think it's an advantage. Especially now, years later. Why should anyone play SNES version if you can emulate Arcade. But Sega's version is like a different game, different experience. And while Genesis was missing some stuff, 32x version even fixed that, while preserving amazing soundtracks :)

As the Backstreet Boys would say: iiiincooompleeeetee (comparison) The PS1 MK2 is considered to be the most "arcade perfect" release. I know it was only released in Japan, but there are obviously many ways to play it in other parts of the world. Also wanted to add that there was another glitch/fatality on the Genesis version. I grew up playing that one a lot and I remember that I think it was the finishing move where Shang Tsung transforms into Kintaro, if you press the B button at the right time, it freezes the game and looks like Kintaro is "Hung Low". After this, you basically have to hard reset the game, but this was still really funny to my 11-year-old self and my friends.

One statement in case people are lost with my comment. I am stating my personal opinion on what I think is best ( Pros and cons ) Hardware performance, graphics, audio, etc. What is closer to the arcade. Genesis has no claim I truly think SNES is more powerful than Genesis, and 32x is on par I believe. However, the 32x and SNES has things that work well with each other. Take them both together and you have the best port. However, each as a stand alone. They both have pros and cons that don't hold up well compared to Arcade.
@Retroconsole7 ай бұрын
I still think it is not possible to say that one port has better graphics or sounds than the other ;) Just personal preferences. We can't compare Vivaldi with Prodigy or Picasso with da Vinci. Some people like SNES port more because of the graphics and audio, others Genesis port for the same reasons ;) Only thing we can really compare is the performance and here Genesis beats the SNES version - smoother, faster, more responsive and heaven sent controller that accidentally has 6 buttons under your thumb ;) PS! I am not saying that Genesis controller is actually better, but it suits better for MK games. Once again, I am sorry if I somehow offended your opinion! I respect your opinion 100%! Thank you for commenting!

@@Retroconsole You do not offend me at all. You just make no sense. 1. You state that its not possible that one port has better graphics or sounds than another and then say people like SNES port more because of graphics and audio, and other like Genesis for the same reasons. Then you go on to say that performance here and that Genesis beats SNES but do not have the specs to back that up. Let me enlighten you. Sega genesis Display Resolution 256x224, 320x224 Max colors on screen - 61 colors on screen without raster effects Max sprites - 80 SNES Display 256x224, 512x448 Maximum colors on screen - 32,768 max sprites - 128 Now the 32x aids the Genesis and boosts the max colors on screen to the same amount of colors on screen. The audio chip is superior on the SNES than the Genesis. That has been proven over the years. Now the 32x aids the genesis a lot. It is what makes the SNES port and 32x port similar in pros and cons. However, the 32x port still uses a hardware from the genesis and this is why the 32x has things updated, but still acts a lot like the genesis using frame skipping. That is not smooth. It is trying to compensate for poor performance. I can see and feel the frame skipping. Without it, the game would feel and play horrible. But it still doesn't make the game smooth. The SNES has some slow-downs, yes, but not to where it's unplayable. The worst I have seen is Shao khan round announcement says 2 twice. That's it. If you are going to compare genesis to SNES, that's a losing battle. However, the 32x is on par with SNES.
@Retroconsole7 ай бұрын
@@Binary_Deviant Few things to correct. Genesis in-game resolution is 320x224 vs SNES 256x224 (only some games use the higher 512x448 for menus, but not in-game). Not only has SNES lower resolution, but it gets stretched to fit the screen (which I do not think is a good thing). Another thing to clarify - SNES maximum colors indeed is higher, however. Even though, SNES has a huge 32,768 color master palette, it has only 256 colors to choose from (due to 8 bit data buses). Making actual maximum pretty much 256. Which of course is still higher than Genesis ;) So far I would say it's not so clear after all, and we even didn't talk about power. Genesis was able to run games faster and smoother. While, not necessary more RAM, it has better CPU speed. SEGA's configuration made it much easier to achieve high performance than Nintendo's. And then they made Saturn :D So here we are now, is more colors better if the picture is smaller and stretched. I think it is debatable :) Audio chip is definitely better on the SNES, I even said it before. And there is no debate. What I do not like with SNES sound is that they used TOO MUCH REVERB. I mean, just because you can, doesn't necessarily mean you have to. SNES games in general tend to have too much reverb. But this is already Vivaldi vs Prodigy talk. Whatever one prefers. I do not think Genesis is better console overall - but I like how it handles sports and fighting games, fast running shooters and platformers like Sonic. I also like Genesis FM Synth a bit more than low bit midi on the SNES. And I actually think Genesis has better game library. More games that I like and I would want to play today. It's actually incredible that we talk about this in 2024 :D To make you understand me a bit better, I also think PS1 is the best Playstation ever made. Does it have more power, does it have better audio or better graphics - No! It's about fun you have when you are playing. Sometimes I switch on my Atari 2600 and I spend hours and hours and hours. When I want to play MK2, I turn on my Genesis. I also have it on SNES, but I don't enjoy playing it. I like my games run consistent, smooth and fast. I want my fighting games to be sharp as Swiss knife :)

The Sega versions of the game remind us that regardless of how good your graphics are if the controller is dysfunctional for the type of game you're playing then it won't matter. The tiny thumbpad and shoulder buttons on the SNES gamepad make quarter circle, half circle, full circle based, and many other moves in fighting games more difficult than with the awesome and superior Sega 6-button controller with it's raised d-pad and Capcom-esque button layout. The graphics and sound may be superior but if the controls suck then the game sucks. I usually side with the Genesis with most games that appear on both consoles due to the higher resolution, no cropping (the SNES cropped and squished a LOT of games), faster and thus smoother gameplay, and much better controls. I also prefer the Sega music in games over the canned squeeky tooty samples used on the SNES for the most part.

I grew up playing the SNES version and I'd say, comparing it to the genesis one, it feels slower in terms of gameplay, sound is muffled and character sprites are washed out, but besides that, Genesis MKII also feels inferior in some aspects. The stages look like comics due to the small amount of colors the Genesis could show on screen, many sound effects are missing including the iconic "Fatality", the menu doesn't have any sound at all. Although It's fair to recognize they made it look, play and sound very "genesis style", it's also the version that is least close to the arcade one. Talking about the 32X, it would've been the best version EVER if it had better sound effects, specially the soundtrack. This one was my favorite version of all until Arcade Kollection came out and there's really nothing any home console version could do, it's just perfect as is.

I played the arcade, and the SNES and Genesis ports. What I noticed. heard, saw, and felt was that the both were Sega and Genesis were poor ports compared to arcade, but this was which was closer. The SNES hands down has a better looking stages, better sounds ( even though many sounds are missing that the arcade has ) the stages and characters are smooth and look great and much better than the Genesis ports as the Genesis has missing textures that the SNES is capable of using. The Genesis can't. The Genesis port is missing frames during a lot of movement, jumps, flips for example. Winning stances, and finishers. It may feel smooth to some. I disagree. I felt horrible playing the Genesis port. Today I'm not fan of the SNES port as I can emulate the arcade or play the Arcade Kollection. These both both the Genesis and SNES ports away Back then in early 1990s SNES was best hands down. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Hands down SNES version is better. I wouldn’t sacrifice graphics, colors, sound effects, music and all its features over genesis minor speed response. It’s not like MK1 delay speed from SNES we are talking about here. MK2 for SNES got a huge improvement. If you play the genesis version after playing the snes you may notice the response is smoother but will notice everything in the game got downgraded. You don’t even notice there’s a speed issue which is subjective, on snes unless you do side by side comparison. As for the music on both, that’s subjective. They are both different takes of the arcades score. The genesis is unique as it says but if you choosing one over the other means you’re loosing on the other ports score. I have MK2 on both systems. And like how MK1 looks on SNES just not gameplay, edited violence and response, though I played MK1 more for genesis (more gritty looking) … I NEVER play MK2 for genesis. The look and even feel of it on SNES doesn’t feel cheap as segas.

Somehow, the Genesis ports were always more playable :) And don't forget the 6 button controller, which felt like it was designed for MK..

I mean, how can it be bad, it's the only version on console, Atleast until the N64 version. And yes... also the N64 KI was better than the SNES, but it's to be expected. When it comes to SSF... both ports are really good and responsive, so Point goes to the snes version for having better sound and video chip. It's not that the snes has bad versions. by default. Acclaim made a really bad port with MK 2 despite having superior hardware wich could deal with the assets, and probe did an amazing job working around the genesis handicap. Sometimes developers can really make the difference, see traveler tales on genesis and what other companies did with their games when it was time to port them to SNES. Toy story has some questionable changes. MIckey mania has tons of lag and Loading screens.... on a SNES game... But those games on Genesis are like black magic, i don't know how Traveler Tales did to put those games on a genesis.

eeh. MK can easily be played with 4 button and shoulder schemes. TRY a street fighter with that scheme. In MK case the shoulder buttons are for blocking but in SF case. Shouder buttons are HP and HK. i played all my childhood SF with 6 button controls and later in life could never get used to HP and HK being in the shoulder side. Also you forgot some details. Genesis version missing features. For example, no goro pit, it was replazed with a blue version of the portal stage. Half of the character lost victory frames. for example Baraka doesn't cross his blades, Cage doesn't cross his arms, Jax doesn't punch his knuckles, Due to hardware limitations Shao kahn has only one taunt, and when he wins he just points at you. Most of the genesis problems were fixed with the 32X version, wich includes better voice samples than the SNES version and more voice effects overall, more sprites (like the missing victory ones), characters recovered the low punch (genesis mk2 has no crouching punch, both were uppercuts like MK1) and the missing victory screens, wich were text only on the genesis version. Music is the same... but doesn't matter because Genesis MK2 music is amazing. At the same time the SNES version made some weird omisions. When cage rips someone in half it uses the wrong sprite for throwing the upper body. Even if the SNES respects more the arcade OST, the audio chip isn't that good and the port doesn't really seem to work well around the console limitations. The genesis version has it's own remix using the best the genesis could do. Probe did a far better job than Acclaim with its port overall The SNES gameplay is dogshit. I mean the og MK1 for snes had some input lag. but it was consistent. MK2 snes port has a very... inconsistent responsiveness. wich means the game may respond to input immediately or take a fraction of a second or not react at all, making the game annoying to play. the genesis version has perfect controls, something Gen MK1 also was praised for.
@Retroconsole Жыл бұрын
Thanks for such a detailed reply :) True :) I have also learned to use the shoulder buttons. It is playable like this for sure, however. It is way more comfortable with all 6 buttons laying under your thumb and block in the middle. In MK2, there was no advanced combo system yet, later in MK3, Ultimate and Trilogy it makes even more sense to have them all under your thumb :) I am also aware of these missing features. And your are right, this is one of the biggest victories for the SNES version. On the other hand, SNES version was missing a lot of animation frames throughout the game, making character movement a bit clunky. 32x version of course, is the best version of these three in my opinion :) Genesis version actually sounds better - soundtracks are louder and easier to hear (SNES sounds a bit like underwater because they just liked to use too much reverb in many games) and sound effects are crispier. Many people say, even too crispy (grainy). I suppose, it depends what you prefer. I am more of a techno person, I suppose. Genesis also has sharper graphics, better contrast with darker tones and higher resolution. It's also more responsive and runs smoother. I recently tested it once again and made another comparison video, this time I only concentrated on responsiveness and lag: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJPIm2dmqr6AndU

But I definitely knew the difference in the day. Muffled and drained of character is the snes version. I remember every Nintendo fan would rave about more sound in the mk games... I can see and remember the difference in controls... The snes was definitely inferior!

Without shaders the SNES version looks like pixelated shit compared to the Mega Drive and 32X versions. The SNES one plays incredibly clunkily as well, whatever its ubiquitous fanboys mumble. I don't give a damn about its graphics either. The grim look and music of the Mega Drive version make its MK2 port stand out.

Respect! You don't even have to be Sega fanboy, just open your senses! Every Mortal Kombat game plays, sounds and looks better on Genesis/Mega Drive. MK2 might be the closest, but still victory for Sega 😎🥇

@@Retroconsole I'm not a Sega fanboy, not even close, but I genuinely like the gameplay on Sega's MK ports, especially the MK1&2 hacks by Linkuei. They tweak the AI so that it becomes reasonable and the fights more enjoyable. The arcade MKs are cool, but the AI is no fun there. The sounds, voices and music in MK1, I like them even more on Sega than on the arcade.

Sega Genesis had the worst 😂 I’m a huge sega fan and I will not be biased about it SNES version was the closest you got to a arcade port besides PC gamers which was not very huge at the time. 32x did a better job but not by much since the setup was too complicated and expensive.

You got to be joking, for one the Genesis original controler has always sucked with it's three buttons, for two the blood, not to mention sound is often worse do to the Genesis always having had bad sound, and sound effects, the way the characters look is usually overly pixelated, and grainy like the first one. I haven't played it in a while, but I remember the blood also looking weird, and shiny in part one, and two, and not like the Arcade.

If you say so! Having played these games thousands and thousands of hours, I almost never want to play the SNES version any more due to slowdowns and unresponsive inputs. Genesis/32x versions are just so much more fun to play, and look better to my eyes. And the music, so much better than this underwater music on the SNES version. But you have your right to like what you like :)

32x>>>SNES>>>Mega drive. The SNES version is very blurred. The early CD versions have bad loading issues. The later ones PS2 and older are were they start to get better. There is a hacked 32x version 1.5b currently and all it lacks is the MSU-MD hack to be great. MSU-MD can work on a real Mega CD. Thus real hardware.
@Retroconsole Жыл бұрын
I also liked the 32x version best back in a day. Now we have all these hacked versions and it is really hard to keep tracking how many versions of MK2 there are in total and which one is actually better than the other :) We live in paradise and we don't even know that...

What you say and what you show weren't even accurate cause the Super NES version does indeed run smoothly and less glitchy than the inaccurate Genesis port. For someone that used the word "truth," you seem to spread a lot of lies. The Super NES version was John Tobias favorite version and he made sure it looks and plays accurate to the arcade original. The other question is if the Genesis version was so good to begin with why do they even need a 32X version? They need a 32X version cause the Genesis sucks. Yes the Genesis version plays faster but it also had too many framecuts, it being faster also means the AI cheat faster too and with no remap options there no custom way to play it. If you use a 3-button controller you only had one punch and if you use a 6-button, both the block buttons gets in the way of the attack buttons. Even worst if you use the Activator the game is literally unplayable. The 32X version was better but it lose too many contents and still use the same awful audio from the Genesis version. The Sega Saturn version had they not mess up with the sounds would had been the almost perfect version over the SNES, Genesis, and 32X ports as well but ala they kept screwing up. Sega had three tries to take over the Super NES version and failed on all three. All of them had to rely on patch and fan hacks to be able to get closer to the Super NES version (and nowhere near the arcade version).

MK1 is better on Sega Genesis than on Super Nintendo, because of the gameplay and the Music that is very good, the only bad thing about the Sega version are the graphics, very bad. MK2: It's much better on the Super Nintendo than on the Sega Genesis, not only in the graphics, but also in the content that is closer to the original Arcade, the only thing really bad about the Snes version is the shitty soundtrack, at least it's not. It makes up for it with the sound effects that are very good and the voices of the characters that are complete. The Sega version is a clear improvement over the MK1, but it simply lacks a lot of content compared to the Snes version. MK3: It's pretty much the same on both consoles, there's not much I can say, the Snes version has a better use of color, but the Sega version has a better OST, for me Mortal Kombat 3 is a tie on both consoles. UMK3: It's MUCH better on the Sega Genesis than on the Super Nintendo, the truth is incomprehensible the huge amount of content that is not available on the Snes version...

Thanks for such a long and detailed comment :) Even though, I don't agree with all of that I appreciate your comment! And that's awesome that the original MK games never died :P I think there is no other franchise with 25+ years old games with so much debate going on..

There's a difference between preferring the gameplay of the Genesis version versus which game more accurately reproduces the arcade original. The SNES is objectively better on all fronts. The Genesis version is missing so many more frames that jumps, regular attacks, and combos don't even function the same. You talk about clunky SNES gameplay....that seems more like your lack of ability. I feel like videos like this exist just for views and controversy. The developers of the game and every media outlet back then all agreed the SNES was the superior version.
@Retroconsole5 ай бұрын
That was back then. Nintendo always had better marketing. I feel (and not only me) that Super Nintendo has aged way worse than Sega Genesis. These graphics considered good back in a day, look so blurry and washed. Music sounds underwater (too metallic, too much reverb). Now talking about Mortal Kombat series, only MK2 on Super Nintendo offered slight competition, all MK1 MK3 and UMK3 were undoubtfully better on Genesis. Now what makes Genesis version of MK2 better than SNES version? It has aged better, it's more responsive and has more stable gameplay overall. SNES has slowdowns from time to time. Also many stages (except Deadpool) actually look better thanks to better contrast. And 6 button controller. No, I am not thinking Genesis version is better, I know it is better..
@JB-tp6uj5 ай бұрын
@@Retroconsole Ok, now I'm questioning if you actually lived through the era. Only a young kid would say that Nintendo always had better marketing. Sega was literally leading the first half of the 16-bit generation due to (among other reasons) their innovative marketing. Nintendo had to rethink their marketing mid-generation to counter. Of course you would know that if you actually lived through the era. And I loved how you glossed over the fact that the developers of the game said the SNES port was better, but I guess you would know better than the actual makers of the game? You talk about slowdown, but don't acknowledge the truckload of missing frames that make the Genesis port's gameplay and timing completely different than the arcade game. You talk about the contrast in colors...that's a personal preference, but not accurate to the arcade original. If you like that, fine. But stop using in an argument when there is a clear visual winner in the SNES port. You talk about underwater sounds, but conveniently missing the garbled sound chip on the Genesis. Heck, the stage backgrounds might as well be a remix on the Genesis with as bad as it sounds. And the fact that it's missing several sound effects. And then you casually want to use the 6-button argument when that wasn't the standard controller with the Genesis. And then when it couldn't get any more ridiculous, you claim the ports of MK3 and Ultimate were better on the Genesis. That's laughable. But hey at least you got one thing right, the MK1 port was better on Genesis. So your argument wasn't a total loss, but I have to call into question if you're just some poser acting like he's older because you wouldn't have dropped a video with as many holes and obvious bias.

@@JB-tp6uj We all prefer different things. Thanks for sharing your opinion ;) Yes, I lived through the area. Where I come from, everyone knew SNES was better console. It was suppose to have better graphics (more onscreen colors), more built in visual effects and transformations, mode 7, better audio. That's what I knew when I grew up. I think developers saying SNES had better version is also part of marketing. Everyone knew it looked closer to Arcades original. I this might be true - but you can't underrate Genesis version which may have taken more different approach. I had strange opportunity to play Genesis at home (I owned it), my best friend had SNES and another good friend TG-16. And before that we also all had 8-bit consoles (both Sega and Nintendo). I before that I even had strange Atari2600 replica called Rambo. Old good times.... And guess what, even back then, whenever we wanted to play any of the MK games, I had 4 of them, we came to my place. MK2 was the only one that gave slight competition. But like I said, It played better on Genesis. When we did competitions we always chose Genesis version because it had less slowdowns, it was more consistent, less input delay, more precise character movements, better soundtracks and 6 button controller. In the SNES version characters got "slippery" in tight moments. But now I have both consoles and I rarely turn on SNES. Mode 7 looks awkward, graphics blurry and I am not that big RPG fan. So I dare to say, Genesis has better library and many games they both have just play better on Genesis. Genesis has aged better. But of course you are allowed to have different opinion ;)

I was hardcore genesis fan But mk2 was such a big disappointment. And when I played the snes version I was so upset I owned the genesis and mk2. This was a. Turning point in the console wars & it was not even the genesis fault .! It was that shitty developer probe being allowed to touch the damn genesis again . Mk1 on genesis was so much of a butcher job it made no sense. They should have contacted sega for Japanese devs that knew how to develop games for the system . Maybe sega would have assigned Treasure to them . The genesis deserved better than this crap

It's funny, for me it was the opposite :D We might live in different realities, dimensions... I had the SNES and when I bought Genesis with Sonic, MK2 and NBA Live 96 in a bundle, I was sold :) I could never go back to Nintendo, I loved the original NES but it was over... The only game I really liked on the SNES was Donkey Kong Country 1 Turning point for Nintendo - all the games became more colorful, more childish.. I suppose I always liked Streets of Rage vibes, techno and punk That is why PS1 blew Sega away for me :) More gore, more horror, more darker vibes
