Get the ALL NEW Classic Gaming Quarterly t-shirt here: www.cgquarterly.com/shirts/ This is a completely re-written and re-produced Genesis launch video that was made from scratch. The old one was delisted after the release of the Master System episode, and I made sure to have this one ready to go to take it's place. The SMS, GEN, and SAT videos now make for a nice contiguous trilogy, with the Dreamcast episode set to finish out the series next year.

After the Sega CD episode, can please do the NES, subscribers of your channel, like me, as a retro gamer, would love to see a video based off the NES, and instead of talking about the launch titles, talk about some games you wanna talk about that were released in the years 1985-1990 because those were the times the NES was popular (I guess you can also say that it was still popular in 1991 to its death date 1995, but not that popular).

Yeh, they just don't make things with such visual appeal anymore. I did like the look of the remodeled Xbox 360 though and I think the PS3 fat is a pretty nice looking system. It looks premium , which is something the other revisions don't... I also like the Super Famicom/Euro SNES look too.

Indeed. I think European Mega Drive (and its original branding) is prettiest them all. Then the Japanese one and Genesis last (the actual logo is nice tho), mainly because of that huge Genesis logo at the wrong place. It should be down there where Mega Drive logos are on European and Japanese machines.

Man NES is still my favorite system though hands down. But I'll never forget the time my brother and I got our new Sega Genesis. My mom made us get rid of our Nintendo. I'm not sure if we did a trade-in deal or if we sold it but we had to say goodbye to the Nintendo if we wanted a Sega Genesis. It came with Sonic the Hedgehog. We stayed up damn near all night on a school night playing Sonic. Man the good old days.

I agree. 'Family Computer' is a 'cool' name. It gets the target demographic's attention but 'Genesis' is a cool sounding name and stands for something in terms of Sega's history (As told in the video). Dreamcast was another cool title as opposed to X-Box and Playstation 2 (Just numbering your systems feels spiritless).

Born in 1984 with an Atari 2600 already in the house, and a NES thereafter. In 1990 or 1991, my dad got me the Genesis. Not sure why we didn't get a SNES instead, but I think for my age, the Genesis had better games. As an adult, I now prefer SNES, but Sonic was just too damn cool when I was 6 or 7. My Vietnamese friend and I were a couple of horny teenage virgins when we played Streets of Rage. As you recall, there were women enemies who attacked you with a whip. They would kneel down in a defensive position, during which time you could not attack them. You had to wait for them to stand back up before you could hit them again. They were copies of Roxy and Poison from Final Fight. You could play as one of 3 fighters: a white blond guy, and black guy, or a woman. All three had jumping maneuvers, which could turn into jump kick if you pressed another button while the fighter was in midair. When the woman enemy attacked you with a whip, my firned would crack dirty jokes by saying, "Oh yeah! Whip me baby! It's sexual. She likes it rough!" When the woman enemy knelt down in her defensive position. My friend would move his character near her to where the fighter's groin was near her head, and pretend that she was sucking his dick, and emulate sounds from porn movies. My friend would play as the blond guy and hit the jump button and say, "Here comes my wiener!" I could not stop laughing.

Another great video -- after watching the Master System video, I had to check this one out. My brother and I's Genesis was a workhorse machine for us from the day we opened it -- Christmas 1989. By getting it at Christmas time, we had access to lots more games than at launch, and we played the living heck out of them. My Genesis is still hooked up and running to this day -- still chugging along, good as new. Countless hours were spent on that machine, including a full 162 game season on Tommy Lasorda Baseball with my brother playing as the Yankees and I playing as the rest of the AL, with stats kept in a notebook. We would do the same in NHL Hockey, which followed on from Lakers Vs Celtics as we logged too many games to count across all sorts of EA sports games. These videos really bring me back to a simpler time, thanks for your great work!

I'll always be an Altered Beast fan. THat game used to scare/intimidate me for some reason I can't explain. The music mostly. The general atmosphere. The deep voices. Having that come with Genesis as the package game was actually awesome, in my opinion. It was like moving to a different video game world, from Nintendo Mario Kiddie Land to a darker, more powerful place where there were decent voices in video games now and slightly creepy Greek mythology games

I was floored with the first one but this one is definitely more thorough so far from what I've seen. I'm at the part where you're discussing Thunder Blade and Super Thunder Blade but I'm of the mindset that it's safe to say Sega definitely was influenced by Blue Thunder because the abundance of other instances of Sega tapping into american pop culture things at the time like Conan, Terminator, Marvel Comics characters, Michael Jackson and so on. I'm willing to bet that if somebody took the time to go back and critically analyze footage of Blue Thunder that there's probably a snippet where Sega hit pause on the VHS, brought in a graphics person to recreate that still for the title screen, and then used that in the game. Because also, notice that the "Gunship Gladiator" depicted during gameplay is far more late 80's boxy and blue color while the title screen is eerily similar to the curvy, early 80's black design of the Blue Thunder lol. On a side note you do a damn good job pronouncing Japanese releases. Are you studying Japanese like me or you had to retake those instances 10 times to get it right? lol. :D
@CGQuarterly
@CGQuarterly 8 жыл бұрын
TheDrunkMonkShow Yeah, I read the thing about Thunder Blade maybe being influenced by Blue Thunder, and then I watched the intro video for BL. Obvious "influence". Did I pronounce that right in Japanese? I consulted some online pronunciation resources for that one. Usually I ask my Japanese friend but he wasn't around this week, and I don't speak any Japanese at all.
@thedrunkmonkshow
@thedrunkmonkshow 8 жыл бұрын
To me you did but I'm just some American learning Japanese. Maybe someone fluent will come behind us will critique both me and you, which I appreciate, but from my years of studying the language you did it right. You seem to have a knack for it. Do you happen to know Spanish because Español shares the shame vowel enunciation as Japanese so it's far easier for Spanish speakers to handle Japanese words than anybody else naturally.
@thedrunkmonkshow
@thedrunkmonkshow 8 жыл бұрын
Oh and sorry to be extra chatty but I also wanted to say your opinions about Super Thunder Blade greatly persuaded my opinion on the game. With that game just like Super Hang-On on the Genesis I blamed the shoddy controls on the VDP not being savy enough to handle line by line raster graphics in conjunction with the Motorola just like Super Hang-On. But you're right like I can remember the arcade version, the TG16, or Sharp X68k version having quick pixel controls while the Genesis version having floaty controls but I never could articulate it quite in the same way and that's exactly what the frustration issue is. Of course framerate would help tremendously but fundamentally on a programming level by the developers the controls seem to have incorporated this acceleration/deceleration algorithm with going up, down, left or right to where in end result your plane slides too much during non-input. The Master System had arcade controls but the frame rate caused a lot of frustrating deaths kinda like After Burner lol. But it's good to have these discussions and once again I thank you for all you do!

What places this head and shoulders above so much similar content on KZbin is the careful research, literate writing, the rare images and footage you've dug up, and the excellent pacing, which provides context without ever becoming distracted by side issues. I also appreciate that you are not overt with your opinions, and that you don't treat this as a comedic platform.

John De Visser Why the facepalm? Shinobi sold a ton of Master Systems. I agree it was a shame not to get a close-to-perfect arcade port on the Mega Drive but obviously Sega wanted newly designed-for-home-play versions of Shinobi at the time, hence Super Shinobi and Shadow Dancer MD
@DominikSobolewski
@DominikSobolewski 8 жыл бұрын
John De Visser Shinobi is an arcade game ported to Master System. Sega should have ported a near arcade version of the game, as it wasn't too old since the launch of Mega Drive in Japan (Shinobi:1987, Mega Drive: 1988).

John De Visser Shinobi in fact ran on Sega-16 hardware, which the Genesis/Mega Drive derived from. Would have showcased the powerhouse that was the Genesis, in addition to the other arcade ports that came around. I guess it's a resource thing.

As a Genesis owner, I always hated how the NES owners would rag on my system. Back in late Fall 1990, I proudly told my friend John that my father was going to get me a Sega Genesis for Christmas. John was an NES owner, and immediately started bashing the Genesis. He just went on and on with his badmouthing. It really got under my skin. It was like racism. Later on, John got a Super NES and he rubbed my nose in the fact that the Super NES controller had 6 buttons, while the older Genesis had only 3. He also criticized Sonic The Hedgehog as a copy of Bonk's Adventure. Other NES lovers said that Sonic the Hedgehog was too easy and not enough of a challenge. All those bad experiences made me prejudiced against Nintendo in general. That was why I would never get a Super NES or a Nintendo 64. It wasn't until many decades later that I got over my anti-Nintendo prejudice and got a Gamecube. I got it so I could play Resident Evil: The Remake. Later on I got a Wii. In retrospect, I will now admit that the Super NES was superior and more technologically advanced (It came 2 years later, after all). The Super NES was the first to carry the legendary and groundbreaking Street Fighter II, the mother of all fighting games. You had to have a Super NES to play SFII. Super NES also carried Final Fight, which was extremely popular in the arcades. And carried the classic Art of Fighting. It managed to get all the cool games. You couldn't get any of that on the Genesis. However, I still loved playing Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Batman (based on the '89 movie), Pitfighter, Valis, Streets of Rage, Fighting Masters, and Sonic the Hedgehog on my Genesis in my early college days.

In the late 90s i found a store that bought and sold used gaming systems that was going out of business. I bought over 75 Genesis games including the 32x adapter and what games they had for it. It did make a big difference in quality imo and loved most of the 32x tittles. Its great to play these older games and see where gaming started and all my kids get a kick out of see how things have changed(for the better) over the years. The Genesis was released in NY first I believe. So I order and as it's in transit, it arrives a town away. I bought Space Barrier and waited a day for the system to arrive. It was a lot of fun. I will say the Dreamcast and master system are my favorite sega systems.

I love these videos. It's a great remembrance of my childhood that I push on my own kids now, due to the fact that I still have my original Nintendo, Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, each with TONS of games. I am disappointed that you neglected to mention the Crowning Achievement, in my opinion anyway, for Sega Genesis: 'SHINING FORCE'! It has always been, and will always be, an AMAZING game! Thanks for the video and I look forward to tons more!!!

The Genesis is so f'ing good. I'm a little older than you and remember my junior year in college going to pick up my launch Genesis with Tommy Lasorda and Altered Beast. My friends and I played it for years. it still sits in my entertainment center with it's Sega CD. Still going strong all these years later. I'm just stunned the Genesis isn't a better collector's item. Fantastic game diversity, awesome manuals, and the best game cases ever. Looking forward to new Genny releases from Piko

I really wish that I had been older during the 8 and 16-bit years, so that I would have had more money and freedom to buy games. Regarding your second point, I think the Genesis was one of the last systems to be affected by the popularization of retrogaming, but the prices have definitely gone up. I used to be able to pick up CIB Genesis games (good ones, not sports games and shovelware) on eBay for $5-6, and now if you want any decent game in decent condition, it's going to cost you upwards of $20. Had I known that things were going to explode like that, I would have held on to a lot more of my stuff, but at the same time I'm gad to not have so much stuff cluttering up my house (I still have way too much stuff...)

Classic Gaming Quarterly Yeah guess I was lucky to have been an adult during NES, Genesis, 3DO, SNES, Etc. Just really appreciated the games more as well as being able to afford them. Luckily I'm old enough that a college education meant something and have a nice big house with room to have a large dedicated game room with storage for years to come. I really feel sorry for kids today. Unless you go into finance you're not going to make enough to even pay back your student loans.

As one who had a Genesis at launch, I had Space Harrier II, Super Thunderblade, Tommy Lasorda Baseball and Thunderforce II. Thunderforce II was the best of the bunch and Altered Beast was a good demonstrator of the hardware's capabilities. I think as a whole, it had a weak lineup of launch titles but quickly made up for it with games like Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Golden Axe, Revenge of Shinobi and Phantasy Star II.

Classic Gaming Quarterly The first was very very very good and this one was a homerun, I like how you put emphasis on the true experience/reputation of Altered Beast during that time and disagreed with the mag editors...that's *exactly* how it happened, Altered Beast blew our minds when we first saw on arcade cabs and was a gem Genesis release (and even system mover at the time). Seeing it on the Genesis for the first time was jaw dropping and pushed us to scrape quick change in a hurry just to get our hands on the system asap, go figure many of these being the same titles we played at the package stores, mini marts, bodegas and at the "arcades" as we used to say. I was fortunate to have owned the original early Altered Beast [styrofoam] Genesis release and the TurboGrafx right before. The feeling of the Genesis was truly like owning a mainstream mini Neo Geo Aes if there ever was one, today I take high priority recollecting all these gems. Keep up the super vids and have yourself a blessed Christmas, I'll definitely be rewatching this over again...these are the vids that pump us up and make us run back to rescan and replay titles in our collection, the same ones I love playing in the background while messing with my collection.

I hope someone redevelops MK1 and MK2 on the genesis so we could see how good they COULD HAVE been if it wasn't for probe. Sculptured did good with MK3 so imagine what they would have done for the smaller mk1 and 2.

Yes!!! I hated Probe with a passion for the butchered Genesis ports they produced. The graphics and presentation could've been TONS better...but the worst part for me was the voice and music! Most of the iconic speech was either downsampled to garbled crap or just nonexistent at all! The music was pointlessly re-arranged. This apparently was something European developers liked to do for some reason; and in MK2 were placed in the wrong stages. Sega should've hired Software Sculptures in the first place. Probe even screwed up years later with the MK2 Saturn port. There was NO excuse for that. You can't blame it on hardware limitations; they just suck!

It was not up to Sega for how bad Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 turned out since it was Acclaim that published the games. If Probe knew how to program the SNES, Sculptured Software would not have been hired to do the SNES ports. Ironic that the Ricoh 5A22 CPU, criticized for being slow and became fodder for the "Blast Processing" marketing of the Genesis, is what ultimately saved us from shitty SNES ports from Probe, by being an obscure 16-bit processor few European developers know how to program.

Not too long ago I had some personal problems and I had to sell my collection of retro games and I just lost the FLAME like, I could not watch any youtube videos with collectors showing their amazing shelves. But !!!! yes BUT !!!! YOU !!! and your amazing SEGA launch videos, even after all that I just couldnt help myself. I had to embark in this journey of SEGA !!! This video and the one about Genesis in 89 made me want to buy those nice early games. They look so BEAUTIFUL. Back then I only had Sonic 1, T2 the arcade game and Golden axe . But now not only I have those but also Sonic 2, Revenge of Shinobi, Xmen, NBA JAM, Last battle, Altered beast (ALL CIB no greatest hits allowed) with also ON THE WAY !!! Space harrier 2 , Thunder force 2 and Super thunder blade. Your amazing video was enough for me to get back on track !!! SEGA FOREVER !!
