If you’re a fan of the spooky and macabre then chances are you’re a fan of one or both of these bone-chillingly funny families. The Addams Family and The Munsters have an eerie amount in common…
Both shows premiered a week apart in September of 1964. Both were shot in black and white and mixed dark, kooky comedy and celebration of non-conformity with genuine family love.

Personally, I don't think the Addams family were normal humans. They put themselves through all kinds of danger that would normally cripple or kill a typical human. And if creatures like Thing and Cousin It exist in the Addams universe, then it's even further evidence that the whole family are unnatural. I always saw the family as a bunch of ghouls with a human guise.

I think calling the Addams family completely human is a bit of an oversight. Obviously they aren't monsters but there's plenty supernatural about them. They often display super human strength and the ability to survive certain death, especially Fester. Not to mention a disembodied hand for a pet/butler and a cousin that it presumably entirely made up of hair and talks like an alien.
@wdd3141
@wdd3141 7 жыл бұрын
I remember when Fester was ailing, and a conventional medical doctor was called in to help. The doctor put a thermometer in Fester's mouth, and Fester began to chew it. He swallowed an ounce of (supposedly poisonous) mercury, and it fixed what ailed him. "That really hits the spot!" he said.

It is often stated that Morticia is a witch, like Grandmama (who is, depending on the series, either in the first series Morticia's mother, then Gomez's mother or mother of none) Uncle Fester (whom I always compared to some kind of Frankenstein with the electricity thing) was first Morticia's uncle, not Gomez's brother. So I think Morticia and her side of the family are not normal humans. And it was once said that Gomez, before meeting Morticia was a sickly youth, so I assume that being in love with him, she cured him with her magic and gave him extra resistance. I think Gomez was first a normal human, very excentric though, but changed with Morticia's magic while all the others were not human (witch does not count as human here).
@mmestari

"So I think Morticia and her side of the family are not normal humans. ""all the others were not human (witch does not count as human here)." Witches are humans. That's like saying that people that know how to use the internet are not humans, because not all people know how to use the internet.

Addams family copyright might belong to family of artist Charles Addams or New Yorker magazine and Universal studios had copyright on The Munsters which was based on universal version of the monsters from 1931 Dracula, Frankenstein and later Bride of Frankenstein and daughter of Dracula and Lily resembled both. I really liked the Munsters as a kid and I still like how they just seem like a normal, sweet family totally oblivious to their own quirkiness, but as an adult the Addams family just entertains me more. It's a little more original and snarky and it doesn't rely on one particular joke the way the Munsters tends to rely on the family's cluelessness in every episode.

I am definitely in the Addams Family camp, but I like the Munsters. The Munsters are funny, but they are basically a lazy reiteration of Universal movie monsters. The Addams family are a weird, surreal and very original creation of the strange mind of cartoonist Charles Addams. The AF TV show is subversive and encourages us to root for the "weirdos" against the clueless normality of the outside world. The Munsters are monsters, but they are weirdly conventional in some regards, except for loose cannon Grandpa.

Actually The Munsters were very conservative in some ways. In fact, there´s an episode in which they´re chosen as the typical American family. The Addams, on the other side, were very well-off but more groundbreaking, as Morticia and Gomez were both equals, and that´s pretty uncommon for a series that aired in the 60´s. Besides, The Addams were much more friendly than The Munsters, who were actually very prejudiced. Love both shows, but nowadays The Addams remain better because of how fresh it was and a more sophisticated humor.

I LOVE THE ADDAMS FAMILY. Never liked the Munsters.. I was an instant fan of ADDAMS at age 9 in 1964. I thought that the Munsters had corny, goofy humor with unlikable characters who were ALL clueless. They all seemed like losers to me which made the show less attractive to my nine year old eyes.. Even the house looked shabby, dirty and falling apart. No sex appeal either. House Frau Lily and big bumbling Herman didn't show any real passion. Herman and Grandpa always sneaking around trying to do something behind Lily's back. Never understood its popularity. The Addams were super weird but super sexy. I had a huge nine year old crush on Morticia. All the characters were so exotic but all had their place, and all supported each other. They exuded such confidence and generosity. They remind me of the way characters are portrayed in ANY Doctor Seuss book. As a family show, it was a great example of a high functioning Bohemian family engaged with life passionately. These two shows are often compared with each other, but they are VERY different at their core. Addams showed us BDSM, with graphic show of playful torture. Yoko Ono style singing. I think Gomez Addams introduced Yoga to the world in 1964.

Ooffff if you think Thing, Lurch, Fester & Grandma were sexy you really need some help. 😂 A boy your age should've related to Eddie not Pugsly. They're both similar and great because they're both fun. Anyone trying to pull out undertones and over analyze the shows by pinning them against each other and saying one was sexy, exotic, counter-culture and etc. and the other was goofy and such, that person is clearly trying to cling to something specific to seem different and stand out. There's nothing wrong with being "goofy" and not trying so hard to be edgy and "sexy" or "exotic". If you can't appreciate the beauty and goodness in everything you only have your one niche. What's so great about living in a niche?

Honestly, I love both series equally. If someone where to redo and combine the two into a single sitcom, perhaps with the two as neighbors and the werewolf son of the Munsters taking a romantic interest in Wednesday that could make for an interesting if weird and macabre series.

I preferred the Munsters myself. It always cracked me up how they didn't see how they were any different than any other suburban family. I also loved how Herman and Lily were just a happy old married couple and good parents to their son, even though they were obviously monsters. Nothing against the Addams family, that's just my preference.

I'm glad we have both and the hell with choosing one! I saw Yvonne DeCarlo (Lily Munster) "live" onstage in the Broadway musical "Follies". I also used to see Al Lewis (Grandpa Munster) seated outside his restaurant, Grandpa's Bella Gente on Bleecker Street in NYC's Greenwich Village. Lastly, when I visited Universal Studios, Hollywood back in the '70s, before it became an amusement park, the Munster house was a highlight of the backlot tour. I had no intercourse with any Addams Family cast members but I did see the Broadway musical. Not very good. I don't think it was mentioned in the video but a bit of trivia: Jackie Coogan (Uncle Fester) was briefly married to WWII pin-up girl with the million dollar legs, Betty Grable. Also, Blossom Rock (Grandmama) was MGM musical legend, Jeanette McDonald's, sister).

Someone's only middle class when they assemble a total of three shitters in their house, none of them outside either. And all of them with extractor fans to get rid of the smell. Of shit. None of this "I'd give it five minutes if I were you" bullshit that the working classes do. And when they stop calling the paper one wipes the shit off one's arse with "Bog roll" and starts calling it "Quilted toilet tissue" - then and only then is someone middle class. Oh yeah and they need different magazines to read when they're having a dump, like "Cunt-ry living" and "Horses weekly" - the glossy ones. Not "Russell Grants horoscope from the Daily Mail" that the working classes have in the shitter, which they may then use to wipe their arses on.Then, and only then is someone middle class.
@sheilabree1991
@sheilabree1991 6 жыл бұрын
Where did I say nine bedrooms ? They had nine ROOMS, which I explained earlier. That's a four bedroom home which is very typical of a family of three and especially having an extended family of a father in law and a niece/cousin live in. Let me repeat myself, Herman's/Lily's bedroom, Eddie's bedroom, Marilyn's bedroom, Grandpa's bedroom. That's 4 bedrooms. Let's add a spare bedroom for spot under the staircase, a living room, dining room and a kitchen. They never showed a ninth room that I'm aware of so grandpas "basement room" (dungeon) must have counted as the ninth unless there was a nursery or sewing room we didn't see. Or perhaps a spare guest bedroom upstairs. Yes, that size home for a family of 5 was a very typical middle-class home of the 1960's. Sheesh, I know many people today with only 1 child that own 4 bedroom homes w/a full basement. I even know single mothers of one child with three bedroom homes.

One enduring problem is when people refer to Grandpa as "Grandpa Munster." He's Herman's father-in-law, not his father! It should be "Grandpa Dracula." I simply refer to him as "Grandpa on 'The Munsters.'" We get the same problem on "The Beverly Hillbillies" with "Granny Clampett." It's "Granny Moses"! She's Jed's mother-in-law, not his mother.

Thank you for this! I just stumbled across your video. I remember watching these shows as a kid in the 80’s. I always liked the Munsters more. Thinking about it now, I think the sexual advances of the Adams parents probably grossed me out as a little kid! Lol! As an adult, I can certainly appreciate both shows equally now. I had no idea that they premiered a week apart, and ran for the same amount of time. I wonder which show received better ratings back then. I will admit, I was a little disappointed that Cousin Itt wasn’t mentioned. I’ve always had long, straight brown hair, and when I was a kid, my cousin Itt impression was my claim to fame! Lol

I have this odd trait of when I see another show similar to a show I already like, I think it'll be just as good.
