One thing that Herman may have 'won' against Lurch was that Mr. Gwynne was required to wear very heavy facial, neck and hand makeup, head prosthetics, lots of padding and enormous bulky shoes to play Herman while Mr. Cassidy wore facial makeup and a wig but just a regular tuxedo and fancy formal shoes to play Lurch. Alas, this resulted in Mr. Gwynne sweating off roughly a gallon every shooting day -despite constantly drinking huge amounts of lemonade and having fans aerate his suit between takes! I somehow doubt Mr. Cassidy sweated anywhere close to that!

One thing you have to give Ted Cassidy -- he was on QUITE A FEW TV series and had spots in many movies! He was in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He appeared on Star Trek, The Monkees, Six Million Dollar Man and also did a lot of voiceover work for animation. He was the original roaring voice of The Incredible Hulk (live-action) AND that show's opening narrator! He had a very effective speaking voice. Too bad he died young. I appreciate him a lot more and realize how much he was a part of my childhood by the numerous shows he did work in... I can't choose between him and Fred Gwynne. I liked both of them as actors!

Fred Gwynne's boots were 4 inches at the toes, 6 inches at the heel. You can see the slope. 6'5'' at height. 6'' boot height, add to that 1 inch on top of head. total 7 feet.

Universal Studios, which produced The Munsters, owned the rights to the classic horror film monsters like Frankenstein, Dracula and the Werewolf. That is why the Munsters had all those characters but the Addams family had to create new characters. Lurch was very similar to Frankenstein but the producers of The Addams family would have been sued if they made him too identical to Frankenstein.
@wardarcade745211 ай бұрын
The Addams Family characters were based on the characters drawn by Charles Addams who'd had no names before the show! Interestingly 'The Munsters' had one 'unfortunate' family member Marilyn who didn't frighten outsiders while the closest the Addamses had to that would have been Pugsley who in one episode alarmed his parents by wearing a Cub Scout uniform and playing with a puppy (which Morticia spelled out rather than voiced the word for pre-adult dog)!

Different networks.
@AvengerII Жыл бұрын
They were on different networks! Addams Family was on ABC, and Munsters was on CBS. Networks are competitors and don't generally try to help each other out. It's nearly impossible to coordinate crossovers between series on opposing networks, too. Talk shows on one network generally DIDN'T like to promote shows on other networks but conceded actors "from other networks" had promotional work so they let them talk about their shows a bit. Tonight Show historically gave preference to NBC series since Tonight Show IS an NBC series.

But what about Jethro Bodine vs Herman Munster or Lurch? Where does he fall?
@wardarcade745211 ай бұрын
Tiny Grandma Walton somehow bearing the Gigantic Lurch!?! Like a mouse bearing a polar bear! Ironically, Ted Cassidy was so HUGE that he spent his entire career fighting against being dismissed as a dim giant with a very deep voice despite being quite sharp and intelligent but he died too young to have more than a few fleeting roles that highlighted his intelligence rather than his proportions! There was one role in which he played a holdout juror during a trial who argued with fellow jurors about the defendant's guilt or innocence but Mr. Cassidy wound up playing the part seated but never standing or walking!
@TonyBoyOhBoy11 ай бұрын
Do you know the name of the program where he played that juror? I'd love to try to find it.
@wardarcade745211 ай бұрын
@@TonyBoyOhBoy As best I can tell (via my IMBD search), it may have been when he appeared in the Bob Hope Presents Chrysler Theatre in 1963! However, on a different note, it needs to be said that Mr. Cassidy ALSO played Thing on 'The Addams Family' (with someone else having to sub when the two characters appeared together). It's not so easy to animate a hand enough to give it its own unforgettable personality but he definitely went above and beyond the call in doing so (and despite the challenges of concealing his bulk onset below Thing-level) This was kept hushed up with Thing being only credited 'as Itself'!

Thanks! I did enjoy it. I had the impression that Lurch is more of a Ghoul. Unlike Herman Munster. The Adam's family was just strange. And not as interesting as the Munsters.

Both shows are favorites from childhood, tho' the Addams' get a bit of a lead in that Morticia & Gomez became my ideal couple (at age 5). In adulthood I like to look at the Addams as the idle rich, and the Munsters as working class immigrants (despite Grandpa's being a Count). Btw, according to imdb and wikipedia Gwynne was 6' 6", and you didn't account for the top of his head, which adds more.

Great take! I'd never heard that before but yes, the two families were from very different socioeconomic backgrounds. Funny how because they are all "monsters" that pretty much goes unnoticed.
