Great advice. Clearly comes from experience. 1. Your spouse is not God. They cannot complete you. 2. Communication is essential. Arguing is better than silence, so long as there is constructive communication happening. 3. You don't always have to be right. Listen more than you talk. 4. Fix yourself in order to perfect your marriage. Be the person you want to marry. 5. Friendship first. Romance second. Romance fades - are you really friends with this person? 6. Talk about things that matter and unite - things both intellectual and spiritual.

I just ended a relationship we liked each other in atraction and friendship, but not in faith. So, I truly worked hard to persuade her about the meaning and importance of Jesus' friendship in our daily relationship, but we couldn't make it. It ain't easy at all if we don't share faith. God bless!!!

I have just discovered your videos, and have subscribed. It might sound odd, given that I am not Catholic, and aged seventy six and widowed. We are never too old to learn, and what might not apply in my life could be helpful to another. It is refreshing to hear two young married people speak openly about the dynamics which undergird a successful marriage. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. 👏👏👏

This is a big thing, I hear the “they don’t complete you” and that’s true, but I’m not fixable before marriage. I can start, but I feel a lot of pressure from videos like this to be “fixed” first… just throwing that out there in case anybody feels the same…

God bless you and all listening.. True, when GOD is in the relationship the well-being of your soulmate is rooted in LOVE. Life has no guarantees but if you marry a person who brings out the best in you-that’s another indication...as a couple grows, the love grows deeper (even in the challenging times when we can’t see it in the moment). Always thankful for all my blessings - the big ones, the small ones and the ones we may not notice. May we never lose our focus ❣️

This sounds like perfect advice. Some of it is for before you are married and some after though this leans more towards before. I'd like to see a video on advice once you are married and you realize that you've already made a lot of the mistakes listed here. a) maybe you don't have common goals or b) maybe you don't have a friendship and can't talk about deep things together. How do you acquire these things once you are married and realize that you don't have them?

Some of the problem comes from one person being insistent of what they "need" but really, its just what they "want". Before imposing on your loved one, be strict on yourself remembering emotional independence is a good thing too, the best precursor to sharing emotions.

Jackie and Bobby, glad you're doing these bits. I really appreciate it. I have a few questions of my own. In these so-called modern times, we're often seeing a lot of talk about gender roles and the gender binary, to what extent is it inherent, or socialized, et cetera. What do you think are the ideal, essential, bare minimum roles for the husband and wife to inhabit in a solid, holy Catholic marriage? What is absolutely necessary, and what is not? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

I hate that line from "Jerry McGuire", I've told that to other people: "No one completes you, you're already a whole person. Marriage is 1 + 1, not half + half"
@ryancomiskey44794 жыл бұрын
I think what she means by "completes" is that when you marry someone, you are partaking in a covenant ultimately with God, and because of that covenant, and the husband and wife help each other through life by a special way (marriage) it more fully helps you to become in full union with God that you might've missed otherwise. This doesn't apply to everyone, obviously priests, and nuns and other clergy are called to become closer with God in a different way, but the general idea that a marriage can help "complete" you, is not incorrect because it points to God ultimately and not the husband or wife that is helping you become closer to God.

Hy there! Could you pls tell me according to your religion, when or if a wife has the right to refuse the sexual embrace of her husband ( if she feels sick, tired or simply preocupated of sth else, not in the right mood) Or, if she is not ready to get pregnant again , so soon? According to mine, married People should withhold during lent, but only if they both agree. Otherwise is considered a sin to say no bc you want to fast for it ( bc you "force" the Other one to do it against his /her will) What if the Other spouse is nota catholic and he disagree the catholic ideas about the reasons of having sex ? ( asking to do it just for physical satisfaction, but avoiding the possibility of procreation, or even not excluding the possibility of pregnancy termination)?

Going to therapy doesn’t just make depression and anxiety go away. It can help manage it, but at the end of the day, it’s going to come in to the marriage. It needs to be brought up and discussed before getting married. While it’s true that your spouse doesn’t complete you and can’t fix you, don’t underestimate how much your spouse can help anxiety and depression simply by being your spouse. Unless you have depression and anxiety, it’s hard to understand.
