Watching this video back, I don't really think it does it justice on just how much work this has been and the crazy part is there is still SO much left to do. While Ty spent the last 2 days editing, I've been out in the woods trying my best to get a handle on the debris...slowly but surely, we're getting there but it's definitely been one of those weeks where we've been questioning is all of this really worth it? Of course...you know the answer. There's nothing that could ever replace the magic of an early morning kayak surrounded by thousands of acres of forest. HOWEVER, it doesn't mean that some weeks just really suck, that's just the reality!

Hey guys. Did you know that the wood ash from your burn pile is great to sprinkle on your compost pile? Save the ash and use it in the garden to help with the soil fertility. ❤️ So glad you both are safe, along with your fur babies. ❤️

Put the ash on before it is rained on. Don't water the pile to put it out. You lose the nutrients when it gets wet. In the fall it is great to use the white ash right on your asparagus plants when you mulch them.

I can't speak for any one else, but I love your "boring" content. As a city/apartment dweller, getting out in nature is a planned event - not as easy as just stepping outside my door. I live vicariously through so many people on KZbin who are showing mundane activities like tending to a garden or clearing brush around their homestead. Idk how to explain it better; its therapeutic to me.

Use the leaf blower to aerate the burn pile. It makes for a much more efficient and cleaner burn. I'm a 70yo widow living in my beautiful cozy cabin home on 12 forested acres in rural eastern Washington state USA. I mostly single handedly maintain the property and that includes unending tree debris clean up and burning. Last year I had 9 burns in Winter and Spring. The leaf blower and a metal rake are my primary tools for burning and after 29 years living on my homestead I'm something of a burn pile master! Best wishes.

Gosh, you two and the Vanwives put out the most perfect videos! Wonderful storytelling, perfect music, fantastic shots on the ground or using the drone. I am just in awe of the quality you put out every week. And the Fall colors as seen from the air are breathtaking. So glad everyone is safe. Yes, that is incredibly hard work cleaning up the fallen branches. Burning all that slash is the right thing to do. I remember being taught years ago that any dead tree will release the carbon that is in it whether it rots in the forest or is burned. Burning just does it a bit quicker. But as you say, leaving around drying piles of branches is a fire hazard that would endanger the entire forest….and your homestead. Love you guys and the pups. 💗

Just an idea for future tree falls... here in the UK, conservationists working in woods make habitat piles from the kind of stuff you were burning. Habitat piles are piles of brushwood and rotten trunks etc, which are left to rot down, and which provide habitats for all sizes of crittur as well as many fungi, mosses and lichen and are a really important asset in biodiversity conservation in woodland. It would save you a lot of work. You can even just leave it lying where it fell, wherever it doesn't interfere with your access. Huge love to you guys!

We lived way out in the woods on a river. Having to clear enough for fire breaks means some trees have to come down, old growth especially. That's what will come down and destroy property. The best & cleanest way to get rid of the unusable brush is to burn it. This city kid learned A LOT including how not so romantic living on a river can be as well as living 30 miles from the nearest freeway can be. It will only take once having a tree (just the top 20 feet in our case) snap off in a storm, nearly wipe out your vehicles & punch a hole through your roof. That is on a stick house, it would be worse for your dome. I think you guys are doing an amazing job.

I know how concerning it is to ensure your furbabies are ok during one of these as I lived through 6 hurricanes while a Mom to a Golden Retriever and 4 cats. It's crazy enough to prepare and look after yourself - never mind looking out for other little lives that depend on you. The worse of the storms I was in was a category 4 in the Caribbean so I understand firsthand the preparation involved before the storm arrives and the cleanup after. I absolutely LOVE your videos and look forward to each and every one. As hard as off-grid life can be it truly is rewarding! Love you guys! ♥
