How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid tiny house that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future.

My heart just sank when today’s post came up, I didnt realize that you, two total strangers to me,actually mean a lot to me. Your energy, ideas, enthusiasms, ups and downs, all inspire me, often keeping me company during chores . Speedy recovery to you both. It can take a while to get over hospital time, the anxious waiting, both being in pain and also having to watch pain experienced by a loved one. I was a critical care nurse for years. I saw much beauty ,pain, fear and love in that setting under harsh lights. Now,back to the fall garden and those loving pooches.

I have never been so happy to hear someone's voice as l did yours Tyler, and l've never been in such a hurry for a Sunday to roll around and this video come up. After last Sunday and seeing you on that gurney you scared the shit out of me. I know you don't know me from Adam but l have gotten so envolved in both your journeys l think of you both as sons, and it's terrifying when your kid is sick and l not there. My son and his husband, l am the same with them. My son had a kidney stone and severe strep throat a few yrs and l was a wreck. I feel your pain. But my big concern with you is your lungs and the air surrounding them, and not getting to know what your out come was or possibly still is, you left me with my questions then answers which has scared me more then you realize. Now l have to wait another week to hopefully get some good news. Just know l think about you every day and am now doing another count down to next Sunday. Great tip to ripe green tomatoes I learnt this year! Spread them out in the bottom of a paper or wood box with some dry wood chips in the bottom, with 1-2 apples. No mold and all of them has or are on the way to ripe! Warm best x

Hey guys, tip for bigger carrots, if you notice they are too crowded in the row just pluck and replant with some space between they will have space to develop that way. And the most important thing take your carrots for a hair cut every now and then, cutting their leaves will make the root grow bigger and thicker so you get more root from your crop. Love you :*

Hey Tyler, get well! You guys are amazing! Quick thought, I live in Denver and we also get early frosts. I pull my tomatoes and chili peppers and put them in a cardboard box or paper bag. Put a slightly green banana in with them. When the produce is ripening, they release ethylene, which encourages the other producer (tomatoes and chili peppers) to begin ripening. Check the produce daily and replace the bananas once they are fully ripened. This works pretty well; takes about 2 weeks

You bet I clicked this video as soon as I saw it up! Hope you feel better soon!! Tomatoes ripen from the inside out, its the ethylene gas produced in fruits that makes themm ripen. Tomatoes you see in stores are actually picked and shipped green and will ripen when they've arrived. So the green ones could take like two weeks to ripen. Add a ripen banana or apple to the mix to speed the process up too.🍅

To ripen a few green tomatoes, put them in a paper bag, close it up, and store in a warm location. Keeping tomatoes enclosed together, the ethylene they emit will stimulate ripening. Hey guys, my husband has had kidney stones (relatively recently even) they are no joke. We are thinking about you and hope for a speedy recovery. Now, as for the tomatoes, absolutely they will ripen inside. Go through the green ones every couple of days to a week and pull out the ones starting to blush and you won't have them all ripening at the same moment, you can have red tomatoes from your garden over a month after they are picked. I put mine on a rack covered in parchment paper to allow for airflow and I only lost one to rot. Much love from your NB neighbors!

I’ve had kidney stones for 10 years and all those goes with treating or breaking them up and the stent and passing them. I passed a huge one a month ago into the toilet and I kept it to show off lol. It caused me painful urinating and I was getting desperate to pass it. The blood continued for weeks. It was the worst one ever and took months to work it’s way out. I’m 27. I’ve had 3 stents placed over the years and lithotripsy 4 times. I hope he gets better. Staying hydrated helps tremendously. There are usually lots of them in the kidneys of those of us who have them periodically. I squeeze lemon in my water and that helps shrink a little or neutralize them.

Just a couple of suggestion regarding food storage and use. We used newspaper to wrap our green tomatoes but many of them got fried as in "Fried Green Tomatoes". They are very tasty and easy to make. Lots of recipes on line so check it out. We stored our carrots in dry deep sand to keep them fresh. Weed them out so none go mushy on you. String your peppers and let them dry, label them so you know what is which. Save your carrot tops to root inside and replant in the spring. We started at early spring to sprout. Save your healthy potatoes with eyes that are good looking, Come spring cut them into pieces with eyes on each piece and grow them. Info on the web. Many people are unaware how much protein and other very important vitamins there are in taters. See if you can work out a deal with a local farmer for eggs. They make taters a complete protein. You guys are hecka cute and I plan on lurking around. Be safe be well.

Hearing Todd's voice on that 911 call, my stomach flipped and I thought, "Gods, what did Tyler get into now??" I actually had a flashback of him falling into the trench. I'm just glad that you got into care so quickly. Praying for you both. And no, Tyler, don't leave the onions in the ground in the cold. They'll be mush!, and they'll rot. I'm surprised you guys didn't have smudge pots out to help prevent frost damage. Keep that idea in mind for next year. I'm grateful you guys are back this week, in spite of what happened with Tyler. We used to store green tomatoes from the garden in the cellar , each tomato wrapped individually in newspaper , in the pitch dark and dry they will not ripen and will not go bad , you then remove a few every week and lay them in the light of a window and they will ripen slowly .

So tomatoes are ripened/turn red with ethelyne gas, they produce their own at their own pace, but if you want them to ripen faster, banana peels produce alot, and you can sort of put them all in a container, with a banana peel near it, not on them but in the same container, and that should speed up their ripening but watch them so they dont over ripen too fast, thats why fruits next to bananas age faster.

Hope Tyler has a quick and gentle recovery! Just a few recommendations on the garden bed: Tomatoes and peppers start going bad once they freeze, so make sure to process them immediately or pick them before the freeze! Carrots can always wait to be picked til December… parsnips and such need to wait through the winter Your kale is flowering kale so it won’t preserve or taste as good as regular kale, but it’ll be goregous as decorations (even after they are picked) until well into December Give the green tomatoes some time in a bag or in the Sun in your dome to ripen if you want, or try any green tomato recipe Best of luck to you all once again!

So sorry you guys are dealing with this. Glad you have each other! If you feel like reading while you're resting, you might order The Year Round Vegetable Gardener by Nikki Jabbour. She's a long time garden writer from right here in Nova Scotia! This book had great crop specific advice informed by the Nova Scotian climate and conditions. You can try putting any unripe tomatoes, even your green ones, in a paper bag to ripen. Feel better soon!

I agree with everyone else here, you guys are so wonderful, I have fallen in love with you both, and I wish you nothing but the best always.
