Shoshana, you're marvellous! I find myself returning to this lecture, where you're showing the skill of connecting, of relating on a human level and expressing your views so eloquently. There's acknowledgement of shared interest, with a comforting and nurturing openness between the audience and you. Thank you, for teaching a lesson that occurs on more than one level 🙏🌞

'We think we are using social media but social media is using us.' Brilliant and catchy and largely true. A dilemma in relation to KZbin: Have we agreed to data processing or have we been mislead? Each platform provides a service, alternatives to each can and do exist. If you are here you probably already know about the threats to privacy and free will so help spread the message beyond the echo chamber. And thank this inspiring speaker and the people behind the event/upload for reigniting the fire and drive to defend our humanity.

Just as it is possible to be a deadbeat in the eyes of the credit card industry, it is possible to be so within surveillance capitalism. There is, however, a caveat. Though the wiley individual may profit due to diligence, practice, insight, and intelligence, people in general will be nudged, coerced, and swayed in the directions hospitable to the surveillance capitalists. And this will alter the landscape for all.

Dr. Zuboff, you are the best, and this is so important that everyone watch. Just look at the zombies walking around everywhere; branded and obese and bizarre, like soulless animals, some committing homicide over a pair of sneakers. People clearly not behaving in THEIR own best interests, but in the interests of the companies paying and being paid, to alter this behavior.

The ruling classes are called... The more we allow... assessment and control... - there are some valid comments to this video, no doubt. However, what I witness over and over and over and over and over and over and over a over over over again, is that nobody, I speak that loudly; NOBODY of all these commenters is willing to take action on their comments. While I totally agree with you, Shoshana, but you can release a million of those videos and it will change - Nothing! Humanity is a sad creature. It's all about itself. Hence, it all will go the way They plan it. Humanity will end up in ghettoes as we have seen in some movies. And guess what? Humanity deserves it! Gosh, someone starts a third world war, please! I mean, an old school war like we know from WW 1 and 2 where we use bombs. And with a little luck it will bring back the apes.

I appreciate her thinking but I also think warning is no solution. I’m expecting someone to shout out “opportunity” or “education”, sadly no one trace is heard even in the background of the sounds. Yes, we are USER to “Googles”, but google is no one person, the board members of Alphabet are also USER. Using parallel of aristocrats vs lower-class to draw the battle line is imprecise at best if not by intention. What is imperative now is to teach the mass how to keep up the pace with the roaring technology advance. Demystify it at first, differentiate the good and the bad, and the safe way to enjoy it. (Sounds like sex ed) As a data analyst I experienced first hand how much more people can understand the data with basic mathematical techniques (+ - * / %). Key point is to look data from different perspectives, the ones missed out from education. Quantitative literacy should be considered basic skill for future generations.

What IS the solution then? What IS the opportunity? What is, ..."Education"? I have watched a thousand videos and Shoshana is the ONLY one who provides the solution. The solution is in the opportunity just as she educates us through that opportunity. You gotta think outside your indoctrinated field of education to understand the message.

And that is why, Shoshana, with all due respect to your professionalism, I like to disagree with you in One point. In the beginning, at 08:33 into your video, you mentioned that: "...surveillance capitalists have been at this for twenty years, which is to say, only twenty years...: There I already disagreed with you. Then at around 23:30 into your video you confirmed my disagreement by saying: "... We have this vast asymmetries of knowledge, to the extend that has never existed before, ..." Wait, in only twenty years? Here is my point of disapproval. Yes, surveillance capitalism is young. Young but in what context? The fact that it is around only 20 years? Given the fact that we Are in the 21st century, the century of technology explosion, least not only because with the help of the internet, these 20 years aren't 20 years as we know from the past but perhaps more than a century and will shorten the time laps with every day passing. A year as we know it from the past isn't a year any longer when we consider technology evolution! Take the current moment as a best comparison. At the time I am writing this reply, today May 2nd, 2020, look at where we stand as in terms of surveillance capitalism! Governments use now available technology to control society. It forces society to accept technology to "SPY" on us, using drones and other devices to detect people who sneeze, etc. We already have no more privacy, we knew that, didn't we. Only, now we are deprived of our basic civil rights and must accept to be "Categorised". How long before we are - For Good - being tagged as a specific categorised species? Excuse me? I don't even want to imagine where we will be only a year from now. Perhaps even sooner. Hence, and to consolidate my disapproval with some of your statements, I like to stress; Our time, the time as we know it, love it, live it, the time of simply being "Human" has already run out. It is NOW, Today! That we need to take action against the control regimes that are aimed at us to literally - Wipe Us Out, as humans. There is now month, no week, no day, no hour to waste on taking that step or else, just forget about it. Prepare yourself mentally and socially to be placed into ghettoes. Some may laugh about me, I am just a simple me. A few will remember me, and a lot, will wish they'd have taken me more serious, ...in months to come. BTW, Shoshana, one of the best statements of yours was when you said: "...privacy policies are really, surveillance policies..." Spot on. I dis-continue to browse a site which forces me to accept their "Privacy" policy or else I can't continue. I welcome, however, the force these sites use so I can immediate make that decision. Think about, other sites don't force you but crawl into your privacy in the background because in their they state: By continuing using their site, you "Automatically" accept their privacy policy. On my site, I refuse to put up a privacy policy because I disapprove the sly approach of governments by forcing me to place a meaning privacy policy onto my website. I follow the rule of transparency and integrity. something neither government nor the big-shot business moguls even want to understand their meaning. So yes, screw the government and their deceiving practices they want to force onto people to "Accept".

@Norbert Harms. When I read your comment, I can't help feeling that 95% of it comes from being in your head entirely, and 5% is trying to touch the ground. The huge difference is that you could turn off the TV when that ad came on; you could ignore the ads in magazines and newspapers and those companies could not get into your house to see what you were eating for dinner. Not so with security systems like Nest. The difference is that when you went to the library to get information out of an encyclopedia, it didn't record what you were reading and you knew your face wasn't being monitored by a camera. The only track you would leave about what you read is if you checked that book out of the library. That's the important difference. Now you have no choice and most frightening, all of it is done without your knowledge or permission. Facebook makes billions in profit, not because they have been offering the site for free: Zuckerberger is indecently rich because he's a salesman, selling the private lives of Facebook's users.

To keep the machine oiled, with our tears. Six Dollars and twenty five cents an hour. Really? For how long? Waitresses making two dollars and fifteen cents an hour, Expecting those tips to make it up to the six twenty five, give us all a fucking break. Benefits? Savings? Even a sick day? None of that. Stop treating ANY human being like a slave, and maybe they will learn eventually not to behave as one, in return. Capitalism must be reigned in, tightly controlled and THERE is the give back, to the humans that make it possible.

That is bull. We allow technology what we allow outsiders, and we don't give up control for a single moment. You might as well say the opposite. It is true that there are market fiddlers. In difficult times, however, the hunters become the hunted. I'm not going to go into the idiotic details of their paranoia marketing (apart from the fact that the analyst has already intervened in my mindset and I've already become a victim of surveillance and manipulation). Judging by what she says, she doesn't make a particularly intelligent impression, I would say that the opposite of intelligence is shown here. The presentation stinks enormously. The interpretation of data is not the data. Appearances are facts, but not the whole story takes place on the surfaces of the faces. Put on your hat, wear a mask and just use spray ointment. F. Y. This argument is ridiculous. As usual the speaker fails to define her terms and succumbs to multiple logical fallacies. For example she refers to the concept of "surveillance capitalism" without defining what capitalism even is - at least according to her. In order to have clear and precise thinking on any given topic we need clear and precise context which means clear and precise definitions and examples. Capitalism is a social system - it is the social system in which individual rights (including property rights) are protected by Government, and in which *all* property is privately owned, and therefore we can say that it is the exact opposite of socialism. That is a controversial definition of capitalism but it is one with which i agree with. But hey, that is something more than what you got from Zuboff. Now onto her one of her key logical fallacies. She equates economic power with political power, but it is important to bear in mind that these are two complete different types of power. In a free market i.e. under capitalism, economic power is accrued by voluntarily means. A baker bakes a cake and sells it to his customer who voluntarily trades his money for the cake because he wants the cake more than his cash. Economic power is the result of win-win transactions. In a free market someone can only gain large amounts of economic power by the continual production of goods and services which we all value. Now contrast this with political power which is what our MPs have. Political power is the power to control people. It is the power to force and coerce through regulation and legislation. It is the power to create laws and then enforce those laws with a police force and military. It makes no difference whether you disagree with the law/regulation, if you violate it, however irrational the law might be you will be taken off to prison against your will. Business has no power, *NO* POWER, to force you to use their service or buy their product. It cannot coerce you to do something that you do not want to do. Only the State has that power. Therefore, the threat to liberty can only emanate from Government/Parliament. Wealthy Individuals can "buy off" politicians but that is because politicians allow themselves to be bought off; they hold the power to force and coerce and they are responsible for how it is used. If you are concerned about liberty what you want is better protection of the individual from the state i.e. you want individual rights objectively defined, protected and enforced by Government. Not only do you want protection from your neighbour, but most importantly you want protection from the institution that can compel you to sit in a prison cell.

The main takeaway is that certain entities (at the moment, a few huge businesses) are accumulating a LOT of data and knowledge about us. You say that business has "no power to force you to use their service or buy their product", yet this data _can_ be used precisely to get us to to buy products or services. Not using force, but insidious means which are barely even visible to us. Also, it is interesting that you believe the economic and political spheres are largely independent. They haven't been for a long time (probably ever), lobby groups have a huge influence over what decisions get taken. And specifically concerning digital giants, have you heard of the "Cambridge Analytica" scandal? If not I suggest you research it -- this is basically targeted political advertising at best, and at worst it is information warfare. In short, there are many ways in which economic power can translate into political power, and the newer ways are more obscure and more powerful than their predecessors.

@@kevalan1042, spot on. Economic power is far from independent of political power. In US, the campaign fund has passed $1 billion! These political "donations" from large corporations are used to buy favourable legislations. Americans do not have representation. Their votes have no real tangible effect. Covert Surveillance Capitalism are used to manipulate, control, brainwash and condition the population to drive political objectives and economic objectives. So, the political structure determines the economic structure. They are not independent. Mega corporations like Google, FB, Amazon. Microsoft, mega banks, etc dictate how voters vote and react by using advanced techology, AI and big data surplus to manipulate predictive behavior. They even used it in Jury Consulting to select jury panels to return the desired verdict. That's why all companies found guilty paid the fines WITHOUT admission of wrongdoing. No jail punishment for criminal violations. They always get off scottfree. Not to mention unfair, misleading, abusive and fradulent business practices. Example, credit cards interest rates are regulated by usury laws. Today, it changed. Credit cards int rates are out of control, as high as 25 - 30% APR. Transfer bal @ zero percent offered for 12 months but they mail the offer 2 months after ( bal of 10 mos offer left). Then it takes about 60 days to post the transfer bal (bal of 8 mons left for zero int). When the offer states it end in Nov, it misleads the user. The zero rate actually ends Oct 31, NOT Nov! When the bal transfer check expires on, say 6/30, the credit card company can delay the posting after 6/30. That will be at a regular rate of 25%! Why? It can be abused when you use the check less than 60 days required to post the transaction. All the company has do is to delay the posting after 6/30 (expiration date) since you use the ck less than 60 days (takes 60 days to post). That's passive fraud perpetrated by cr card company. Lastly, they sent the statement after the zero int rate expired at the end of the term, causing the new rate @25% to be chged. Other examples include small print disclaimer, disclosure, "free" with asterisk, etc. And, huge penalty for late pymt. I specialized in business anti-fraud for over 20 yrs, have used data mining to identify frauds and abuses using predictive analytics, patterns, trends, and tendercies. They use Surveillance Capitalism to undermine your freedom and privacy in very subtle ways undetected.

@@HeresMyView Well done. Much of the financial manipulations you discuss, we have Candidate Joe Biden to thank for.

@@toddvanfleet8576, yes I agree. Why do you think there are so many Americans still support Biden? A career politician for > 40 yrs and become filthy rich on a goverment salary paycheck. The math does not match his financial assets. And, his son laughing all the way to the bank. 😆😆
