A man that takes on another mans children is a treasure. It is such a fine line they have to walk. Also, some people think that romance dies as people age - for many people that is not true - physical love can be very beautiful in older marriages.

Doug's a keeper, he's just such a sweetheart ! You two are just so adorable. My hubby and I have been married for 46 years and he's STILL the best thing that ever happened to me. We laugh and talk a lot and now we are retired we enjoy the simple things in life so much more like being blessed to still have each other. I think you are right about some of the reasons why older couples bicker and seem resentful of each other. They probably were working hard when they were young so didn't notice how they had drifted apart till the kids leave home, they retire and have to spend a lot longer together. I think it's so sad as they must have been so in love when they first married/lived together. Forget the guilt about your illness and medical expenses lovely lady - you would do the same for Doug in a heart beat . God bless you both always from a sunny Wales - YES I SAID sunny !!! He doesn't talk to me much but that is his way and i find my contentment in Jesus and try to serve my husband in the way he needs. Study your husband ladies. He too inherited 2 step children and the journey he had with them was similar to your husbands. Unfortunately my children father was not present as they grew up, and my children now look upon my husband as their father even taking his name. Just a note about being chronically ill: I'm only 24, but my partner and I have faced some pretty major health issues (mine) in our time together. Like Doug, he swears up and down I'm not a burden and he wouldn't trade me for a perfectly healthy person. I COMPLETELY understood your persistence in this video. I can't believe my partner doesn't resent me for all of the time, money, and energy my health issues have consumed. But he loves me just the way I am, just as Doug clearly adores you. Thanks for doing this Melissa and thanks for Doug giving his insight into why it works and why maybe other couples don't work. My husband walked out just over a year ago now and the first thing he said to me when I asked why, he said I was so cruel that I never gave him a baby. His decision 15 years ago to refuse to go to IVF with me was why we didn't have children ( I'll carry that hurt for ever because I desperately wanted his children but was to scared to go against him and end up a single mother again) He has always made put down comments and making them out to be jokes. Even when he would take me to the jeweller to by me something special he would run me down with his comments, to the extend the sales lady one time was so uncomfortable she looked at me in shock. I tried to explain that it was bad behaviour but he just put it back on me. His nephew even said to him the comment he just made was really harsh and uncalled for. He answered his nephew with "she knows it's a joke" . The comment he thinks was a joke was to call me "A barren bitch" a few weeks after I got out of the hospital from having a hysterectomy under really traumatic time. So it makes sense that after years of his constant put downs and me trying to appease all the time but not understanding it, he was slowly hating on me instead of dealing with what ever his issues were. All round it's devastating the effects people can have on other people because they choose to live a lie. If he had left me when he knew he didn't want to be with me, I wouldn't have waisted 23years on a man who was hiding the fact that he never loved me. That is a nightmare I use to see in movies and hoped as a little girl that never happens to me but it has. Now I live with the constant wait for him to send divorce papers, it's sold destroying and in the last year I've found out that it is so many women treated this same way, when they were under the impression their marriages were extremely strong. He made me feel I was the love of his life when all he was doing was waiting to get the guts to leave. Still to this day I don't know what was his reason really for leaving. Up until an hour before he told me he was leaving, we were happily interacting and even was so happy looking and smiling when he asked me to come do our tax. A minute after we walked back in the house from the tax office he told me. Anyway I'm long winded. Thank Doug for his insight. I'm improving week by week as time goes on, so that's a positive and I wish the best for everyone that they never have such heartache :)♥

We have been married 47 years & still have fun, show love, and make future plans too. Being kind to each other is key! We've started praying together before bed, for the last two years. We've also had the illness thing and the children period...and now it's grandchildren. Two attend UTK and we love to see their games. We moved from Seattle to Nashville about three years ago. I went to St. Mary's school in Johnson City in the first grade, so I kind of know where you live. We visited my old house two years ago and I was shocked it was still there in Gilmer Park. Amazing! Anyway, I love your VLOG and totally respect your willingness to share your lives...thank you! Blessings to you and your family.

You two are super cute! I love how honest you are. It let's other people see that life isn't perfect naturally but it can be close enough to it if you work at it. I also have to say that I totally agree with the "not saying anything you'll regret" in a heated moment. My Dad insists that this is a key ingredient to the health of a marriage. Keep up the great videos! xxxx

Wow, that man loves you, Melissa, and you just love him, too! Correct me if I'm wrong now but you are the more vocal one I bet and he's the quieter one? You know I can tell you balance each other out. I understand what you said about still finding your husband completely attractive after years of being together. I feel that for my husband. It's like I still think I've never met anyone like him and never will again. Some of your discussion looked cathartic for you as maybe you haven't discussed some of this with Doug before? I hope it made you feel like you let go of some things that needed to be freed. The topic you chose here isn't discussed often enough. Great video. Angela xoxo

Thank you so much, Angela!!! Yes, I really do feel like I am the more vocal one. Doug likes to chill and just read and relax. Oh that is so sweet the way you feel about your husband! I had skirted around the issue before. Offhand comments, like, "I bet me being sick has been a pain in the butt for you", casually. I was surprised that he was surprised that I thought they had been awful times. Thank you so much and much love, Melissa

You guys are so cute. Melissa, I can relate to having a lot of illnesses and sicknesses. I am genuinely happy for you both - happy for you to have someone there to help you. I have never had that at all with family or anyone. And, I'm a single mom. My son actually helped me out recently after a big surgery, which means so much. I really hope your health is a lot better now. You two are so cute together - and you are so honest, and he is sweet for stating things were fine and didn't bother him. :) I'm also a big worrier..but working on it! :)

i just recently subscribed to your channel which i stumbled across because of my huge interest in skincare. i usually just lurk around youtube without commenting or subscribing to any channels, but you are such a likeable personality. i know this is an older video, but i wanted to tell you how much i appreciated you talking about your illness and the guilt you feel about being a burden on your husband. I too, have a chronic illness which at times is difficult on my family and i feel a tremendous amount of guilt. when you talked about it, tears came to my eyes because i can relate. my husband is also a very good person like yours. i had to stop working a few years back because of my health and so my husband now supports me and our daughter and pays for all my medical bills. i hope when we have been married as longs as you have my husband will also say he never resented me for the hardships i brought to his life. thank you for sharing this video. there is so much i can say about it but i will stop here.

I think you and Doug are just a lovely couple. I can see how much you really love each other. He seems like a wonderful down to earth man, genuine, and sincere and since I'm a big dog lover I just love the way he holds and cuddles Oliver. You can tell alot about people by how they treat their dogs. I can see how much Oliver loves you both. This is one of my favorite videos so far. You're both very sweet. I'm so happy I found and subscribed to your channel. Thank you Melissa, Doug, and Oliver.

Melissa...you have no reason to feel guilty. That's what love is all about...and it is very clear that Doug loves. you. The year my husband and I got married, 31 years ago, his brother was diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas. I was in college, working full time, and planning a small wedding, but there was no place that I wanted to be more than sitting with my "husband to be" at the hospital. I wanted to be there for my husband and his brother. I didn't know his brother very well then but I loved him and felt so heartbroken for him. Instead of this situation breaking us a part it brought us even closer. The two of you were meant for each other. My husband also likes to keep the mystery alive. I feel the same way about my husband Melissa. When he walks in the room my heart still skips a beat. I think having that chemistry is really important in a marriage. It gets you through the tough times. Loved every minute of this video. Love you! Laura

I do hear what you are saying, but sometimes your feelings don't always align with logic, I think. Guilt is one of those emotions that's hard for me. I love this story abut your husband and the love and support you gave your husband. And hopefully everything that you've gone through since has brought you closer, too. In the past few years, Doug has lost both of his brothers within a short time of each other. It was devastating for the family. And I had to learn to give Doug his space. Unlike me, he needed his alone time to grieve. So I think knowing what the other one needs is important, too. I love that you still feel breathless seeing your husband. I do, too, with Doug. Love you so much and thank you for sharing. Love, Melissa

I stumbled on your beauty videos and I am watching them. I thought I'd check this one out too. I love that you respect each other so much and are kind to each other. Once the respect is gone its downhill from there. I'm very happy for you. You found a living caring man. Let him love you. You are conscientious and so you worry about all you think he's had to bear through your health issues. I can tell you would have done the same for him had the tables been turned and been right there to care for your loved one. You two are a inspiration. I'm having my husband watch this. And you are right to make time for each other and nurture your marriage. Usually if you don't when the kids leave you find you no longer have anything in common. I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you both for sharing what is working for you. God Bless you both.

You seem an amazing sweet woman and your husband looks a great husband. I can tell how you love him. You are absolutely gorgeous. I just discovered your channel and I like the fact that you are feminine and classy but not overly sophisticated with fake eyelashes and a ton of make-up. I love make up, don't get me wrong but when it is too much, we don't look natural at all and I think we are not ourselves anymore. I am 47 years old and I had a lot of problems with my health too, mostly the last years. I try to take care of me to feel myself again. I hope I will find some great tips with your videos.

Hello Melissa. I saw this yesterday and it gave me a great deal to think about. Tell Doug that I am so glad he agreed to it. My husband and I have been married 48 years August 30th. Despite the longevity of our marriage, your video gave me food for thought of what the "glue" is that keeps couples together. I find all of your chats thought provoking and insightful though I do not always comment. I cannot thank you enough for being willing to be vulnerable to help your audience. My husband and I have been through many challenges and as we age, we are facing even more challenges. We also try to have "something to look forward to." I can't stop thinking about your video and I am going to watch it again. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your soul with your subscribers. Hugs.

Thank you so much for this. Many congratulations on your marriage. You are such an inspiration. I don't feel like any kind of expert. I feel like a failure in that my first marriage ended in divorce. It was such a hard thing to go through. I just never wanted to go through that again, and neither did Doug. So I did think that made us more determined to make it work. And it is work, isn't it? But I think the respect I have for Doug and I hope he has for me, has really made a difference. I think he is absolutely wonderful and I try to remember to tell him that daily. Thank you so much for this. Much love, Melissa

I can't tell you how much I love and appreciate this video! Your husband reminds me of the men in my family, my father had the same disposition and kind nature and my brothers both took on the same quality. My Uncles who I remember fondly and loved dearly again same qualities. My husband is also the same! It's just wonderful to see and I hope for today's youth that seems to be moving at such a fast pace that young men still grow up with this same nature to them. Wishing you both continued love and happiness. Have a wonderful Easter!

Just a few thoughts on this video...any man would kill to have his wife look at him the way you look at Doug! He is your hero, your knight in shining armor. He can completely trust you, especially with his emotions. You have utmost respect for him. He has earned that respect by taking care of you in your weakest moments. He meets your emotional needs by his tested love. A beautiful picture of what marriage can be. Also, I have got to get one of your off the shoulder tops...SEXY!

Wow, what an amazing comment. I really loved this. He is my hero. It's hard to describe what an advocate he has been for me, especially when I was sick. He would get on the phones to doctors, hospitals, whoever and really get things done for me. Yes, He can trust me completely. It's very interesting thinking that. Doug lost two brothers a few years apart. They were his older brothers and each one died about the age Doug is now. One of the losses, I tried to hug him and hold him close. He told me not to touch me. It really hurt my feelings, but I realized it wasn't about me. It was about him and his grief. At that moment I think if I had touched him with compassion, he would have lost it, and he just didn't want to do that. So I do think trying to understand the other's emotions and feelings is important, too. I wish I had remembered to discuss that in the video. I think it was something very important that happened. Thank you so much! Love, Melissa
