To some, it's a brilliant running gag. But they are also arc words, similar to "Why so serious?", "Do you taste metal?" and "Interlinked," (from _The Dark Knight,_ the first episode of the Emmy Award-winning HBO miniseries, _Chernobyl,_ and _Blade Runner 2049,_ respectively.) Some of the sculptures give me the creeps whenever I watch this film, especially the prologue, because, for some reason, I fear that they will come to life because they're so realistic. Good introduction to a great Carol Reed film. _The Agony and the Ecstasy_ is one of my two favorite films from his repertoire, along with _The Third Man._

Great prologue to a superb film. Charlton Heston seemed born to play Michelangelo, with Rex Harrison making an excellent Pope Julius II. Sadly, such a production never would be considered today, for Hollywood wants nothing to do with promoting any of western civilization's greatest-achievements, as this movie about Michelangelo's painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel showcases so well. Such artistic-glories as were sponsored by the Catholic Church over the centuries never would be featured in any movie today, nothing with any religious-connotations in general. How times have changed, with western civilization at its weakest low-point since the early Dark Ages. Guess what, though, Hollywood? The Sistine Chapel ceiling, along with all of Michelangelo's timeless sculptures, continue to stand the test of time---whereas the vast-majority of your output is instantly forgettable!

Blame it on the audiences.... how many people would go and see a movie like this now?? Hollywood is a business, if there's demand they'll meet it.
