I guess this will be the test. The idea that less patching means more thoughtful changes - rather than simply chasing Engagement through new updates. If these changes actually improve the balance of the entire cast then maybe Capcom have the right idea ultimately. The longer they let things rock the more nourishing their changes should be. And the more time theyve spent testing and thinking about them.

They should do major balance updates twice a year. Post Evo and post Capcom Cup (so basically summer and winter update) because it really has been getting stale and I'm someone who thinks SF6 is a really good game.

Interesting phenomenon: I have mained Ryu since World Warrior (tes I am that old) and I would consider myself a good casual player. Inwas working my way up the ranks in SFV and got the message I was a top 1000 player in Europe. My son took an interest so I taught him to play. I loved SF2 so much I learned how to play everyone to a decent level so I taught him the basics before he mained Ken and I got into more detail with concepts. He became very good and the only character I could compete with was my main. I'd have to be at my game to keep a 50/50 win rate with him. I was sure he was ready to inherit my throne so I gifted him my SFV account but something unexpected happened. I start hearing groans of frustration, he was tumbling down in rank. I saw him lose a fight to Chun so I took the pad and went on to beat that player and the next 3 online opponents without too much trouble. Why?

Waiting was def the right move i think tho. Outside of fixing busted stuff like infinites, you can't effectively balance until a meta forms, a stable player base is estabkished and you see who is playing, and time allows tech to develop.

Honestly? If they increase the frequency to 2 balance updates, a mid sized one after the first half of the CPT, and a major one after CapCup, it would be fine. If the balance patches come out too frequently, then you get the NRS syndrome, where it's not even worth trying to master a character cause they could and probably be significantly different 2-3 months later. That would rob us of moments like UMA winning Capcom with Juri or Mena crushing EVO Japan with Blanka. Cause reminder, no one thought either character could win against the golden trinity of Luke, Ken, and JP.

Sometimes, it can take more than a few hours of testing to figure something out. Best example I can give of "it took a while" was the fuzzy-blocking against tall characters that developed during Season 2 of Dragon Ball FighterZ. It's technically possible to shut down launch Season 1's version of Android 16 with those fuzzy setups, but nobody had figured the fuzzy setups out until after he got hit with nerfs. I will agree that an entire year is too long, though. I think the sweet spot is about every 3-4 months. Gives enough time to develop changes to the meta while keeping things from getting too stale.

With Honda you can also DI their sumo Torpedo. Just need to do it extremely early and it won't work when they are too close as they can just DI back.

Honestly, I think Capcom did it right when it comes to balance patches. Yes there are characters that are lacking, and that isn't cool since we saw Luke, Ken and JP in top 8 EVERYWHERE. but I think the idea of constant update patches and trying to keep up is not great for casual players and the game is very close to being balanced. I like that they waited, and more fighting games should follow this trend.

I think it's honestly crazy that Honda gets nerfed while blanka has just a better version of headbutt, you were able to DI on reaction to headbutt and always get the hot, blanka bounces away far enough to punish you if you do

Uhh, no? DI has always been stronger against Blanka ball than Headbutt. Headbutt has 20f recovery vs Blanka Ball's 34+f, so while Blanka's heavy ball (not even OD, *just* Heavy), could land outside DI range, it's also 20f startup instead of 10f, and you'll whiff your DI, while Honda will outright punish a late DI tanking the hit using his own DI after getting control back and you get dunked on. You'd get pro players telling people to DI headbutt if it was a good option, but it's not, it's quite risky. But light, medium and OD Blanka balls get stopped by even flimsy DI attempt Pound for pound, headbutt is stronger than blanka ball, but that's been fine considering how many more tricks Blanka has when ball doesn't work. Even this nerf to headbutt just kinda brings the move merely closer to Blanka ball. The fast Blanka balls don't go fullscreen anyway (and are -23 on block), and the full screen balls are 18f and 22f. Tradeoffs. Honda deserves to become more of a fundamentals normal button pressure monster rather than 2-trick pony

I do not agree on Honda or any character, being nerfed on the base that is hard to beat for lower levels: other characters are hard as well to beat for beginners and still remain like so at high level because of their characteristics. Blanka is as well, but his Blanka Ball or Rainbow ball were not nerfed: blanka has many options and setups that honda doesn't have, off course if you give a character just 4 things, and headbutt being a move that is his main tool, people are gonna use it abundantly, still they were already pretty easy to deal with. I found platinums that were able to perfect parry most of the butt slams and headbutts, so in my eyes this is a nerf done because of bitching on the first months, and I am tired of people bitching for a little obstacle that to be overcomed, just needs you to play the damn game and learn. Honda needed also to have the hurtbox on buttslam to be reduced, because now it is MASSIVE, and even if your timing is a bit off you can still win with a normal antiair. Also OD headbutt should have not be grabbable, and it seem it still is: do not put a move like that if a simple throw can nullify it. I can understand Zangief SPD it, but a simple throw? no way. Another thing: people will go heavy on macros on PC version to pull off Demon out of the blue, that is for sure XD

As much as i like sf6 having no real changes (bar a few) for a year really sucked. Sucks even more when you see that the game is somewhat treated like a free game with battle passes and what not. Im hopeful that the extent of the changes shared by capcom via the creators who tried the game early is only a small fraction of it, but if its not, the game is going to play largely the same imo. Drive rush fireball (or in akumas case air fb dr) will still be strong. Luke got some supposed nerfs but also some buffs. The lower tier characters might get some buffs that are nice for qol but not really exciting enough for another year of the same gameplay. IF the changes are more significant across the board that would be great but if not, i dont see people who got burnt out on the game in year 1 playing season 2 for too long

Akuma looks like crap to me. His demon teleport loses to strikes, his demon flip lost the throw option for a super slow kara option, his raging demon has NO invulnerability and requires 3 bars + CA life, his air fireballs don't work from back jumps and only work on neutral jumps if you make them OD, and he has the lowest life. His strong fireball being charge instead of HCB also is a huge nerf

In my opinion from what we've seen this patch isn't big enough. Luke is still gonna dominate even with Akuma coming out. People are gonna return for Akuma because of the character himself, which leads me to my next point. Characters are important so with that said Capcom better add most requested fan favorites for season 2 or a lot more people are gonna stop playing the game. Season 1 was a complete let down because they literally sold everyone SF5 again after having to deal with that game for 7yrs. They should've mixed the pack with 2 fan favorites and then 2 SF5 characters I guess, but Capcom better get it together. I've seen Dudley, Makoto, C. Viper and Cody on most people most requested. Why isn't Capcom looking at these poles? 👀
