I lost a son two years ago. He was only 17. This was the first song I connected to my loss. I hope I get to see him again. The song captures my feelings of boredom and apathy as time drones on, along with the intense pangs of loss and desperate hopelessness that hit me every so often. I first heard this song when I was a small child; it came out a year before I was born.

I had the biggest crush on a girl named Jenny since I was in the 6th grade in 1981. She was a year older than me and never knew I liked her. I was always afraid to tell her. I would see her and always wanted to tell her but never did. Finally, in my junior year in high school (her senior year) at a school dance, the last one of the year, one of the last few songs of the night, this song came on. I spotted her across the room and said to myself, “It’s now or never.” I summoned up all the courage I had and went over to her and asked her to dance. She said, “Absolutely!” We strode over to the dance floor and started slow dancing. I couldn’t believe it was actually happening. She was tired from dancing all night and just laid her head on my shoulder as we danced. Time seemed to stand still as I couldn’t believe the girl of my dreams was here and dancing with me so close. Then before I knew it, the song ended. She hugged me and went back to her friends and I went back to mine and sat back and soaked it all in. She graduated and I never got to tell her how I felt and never saw her agian. But for one moment in time, I had the girls of my dreams in my arms for five minutes and eleven seconds. I often think about her. A few years ago, I sent her a friend request on FB and she accepted. I check in on her FB every now and then. I wonder if she even remembers the dance, probably not, but I will remember it for a lifetime and that’s okay.

May 1981, when this song was all over the radio. I graduated that month from HS. I had 2 weeks until I left home for good when I left to go in active duty with the armed forces. I had made that decision months prior. It was my time to serve, my mother knew this as two of her other sons had previously served as did her husband during WWII. I was her last born. This song brings back the pain of me catching my poor mother crying over my imminent departure. While the excitement of what lay ahead for me was thrilling, the pain of seeing my mother so sad just killed me. But I knew she knew that this was part of life. She died 13 years later while I was deployed in the Persian gulf while still in the service. Part of me died then as I wasn’t able to be there when she left us. The farewell in this song is soooo haunting and hits soooo hard. But that’s life. Makes me appreciate the fact that I had such a wonderful, nurturing, caring and loving mother.

All these years later and this song still hits me like a dagger in the heart all over again and it's like being transported in a time machine to July 3rd, 1981....wow!!! I was sooooooo young and he wasn't lol....and it was as if they wrote every. single. word. of this song, that summer, just for lil 'ol me and my poor, young, impressionable, naive VERY innocent heart that was shattered into a million pieces, unintentionally...sort of... by my first and absolute worst crush on a dreamy super star member of the Canadian Equestrian team. All the girls at the horse shows had a crush on him but I caught his eye...lucky me!! lol To a young rider, he might as well have been the lead singer of a boy band!! lol I really didn't think I would survive the aftermath of our meeting and parting and the thought of our Good Bye being forever sent me into fits of hysterical sobs!! I listened to this song 20 times a day at least... sobbing my heart out, watching him on TV winning Grand Prix after Grand Prix like the awesome stud that he was... saving every news paper clippings and magazine articles like a psycho.... praying we'd see each other again....before it was GOOOOONE FOREVER...GOOOOOOONE FOREVER....GONE FOREVERRRRRRRRRR.. That poor guy nearly had a heart attack when we finally met and he found out how old I was!! LOL Yep, I was definitely 13 going on 30!! And nope, my parents never knew that whole story!! But I must say he was such a total gentleman, or terrified of going to prison!! lol And after all the shameless flirting he did, he even had a photographer secretly follow me around the horse-shows taking countless pictures like any good stalker/pedophile would lol... But I thought all that stalking meant that he would LOVE ME FOREVERRRR!! hahaha I had a lot to learn about love and stalkers! ha ha But even after all this TIME, I hear this song ( #10 by now) and it still brings me right back to those tears, the angst, the yearning, the dreaming ...for YEARS!! And no, we never saw each other again. So.... it really was gone forever as the song warned..... my worst fear back then. He's probably old and creepy looking now!! lol ML if you're out there, you old perv, you certainly left your 'mark' on a young, impressionable equestrian 100 years ago!! If he behaved that way today he'd probably get arrested!! lol Thank GOD he had the common sense just to fill my head with silly romantic notions and then swiftly jumped on his horse Damuraz and rode off into the sunset and refrained from taking advantage of a very young, naive, clueless, love-sick goof ball. Ahhh to be young and obsessed!! So, glad I grew up and lost all faith is that silly thing we call LOVE!! Life is much 'calmer' now!! Great song though!!! Thank you for keeping my tear-ducts well lubricated in my youth!!

Wow... I guess this is the first time that I like more the live version, than the studio's one... What a voice, I love this music since I was a child... Really special.

I remember PJ from high school days. We didn't go to same school, just knew who he was. I think he sings very nicely. Love this song, too. 🙂

Never ever under estimate the awesome power of music and vocals as in this performance it's just astonishing and mightier than the pen and the sword welded together like two hearts were once one.

I love APP. My favorite is "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You",and " If I Could Change Your Mind" they have (Eve) a lot of meaning to me. After a rather nasty breakup, it reminds me of a past that I deeply regret, especially as my gf was called Eve.
