Introduced in 1985 and manufactured until 1992, the #Alfa75 was arguably the last old-school #AlfaRomeo, and it's also been the last rear-wheel-drive saloon until the arrival of the 2015 Giulia.
Well over 300.000 Alfa 75s were made, though, and not all were created equal: the beautiful example in the video is one of the most coveted models of all: the 1991 #TwinSpark ASN, which stands for Allestimento Speciale Numerato. Known outside Italy as either Limited Edition or Podium, it was kind of a sendoff, a farewell to two of the most beloved versions of the Alfa 75 as this model's production began to be wound down: the Twin Spark mentioned above and the Turbo Quadrifoglio Verde.
The collector's appeal of these run-out models, whose mechanical specification remained unchanged, primarily resides in their relative rarity, as only 3500 Twin Spark ASN and 1000 Turbos ASN were made, each carrying a plaque on the dashboard with the example's progressive number. Secondly, I must admit that these are perhaps the best-looking 75s of all, as the ASN package adds the finishing touches to a shape that's already got plenty of character and a unique personality.

Yup, especially for us from the former Yugoslavia :D I'm a fan of the period myself and love the cars from the era (have 93 bmw) and thinking about period makes me nostalgic, but then I remember that I was 10years old carrying water buckets to 4th floor, had irrational childish fear from dark because of the candle light and had sleep interrupted on few occasion because we were going to the bomb shelter during night raids. oh, and food was scarce. Strange life :)

Had only one time drove this beauty but the memory remains.. the year was 2000. Unforgettable experience. It was unlike anything on the road. Owned by my uncle. And the colour was the same as this one; Alfa Red. 2.0 T.S but not with Recaro seats like this one. It still special to me.

I still remember the first time I drive an Alfa, too. I already was an Alfista, but had never driven one. The first time was a run-about driving a friend's father's Alfetta 2.0. And there I felt a car different from all the others ...

Good 75s aren't rare, luckily. Well, at least here in Italy. But if you look for a specific version in a specific color, then it gets trickier. By the way, congrats on your Quadrifoglio! That's an awesome car. I've only driven it once, one of the rare manual-transmission-equipped ones... But boy it left an impression on me!

What a beautiful model this is, after 30 years it almost look new. I had a 1988 twinspark with the facelift look and it had also this sprinklers on the headlights, it was a champagne color 75 and it was a perfect color for this car, my 1986 75 turbo had also champagne color. Now i have a 156 facelift 1.8 twinspark, bit stil looking for a 75 twinspark, i think the perfect engine for the 75🍀😍

Good video! A very, very good car, made as a budget-driven reality from the shell of its predecessor and a few gems from the parts bin. The 75 was certainly more than the sum of its parts.... It hit the UK market at a strange time, when Alfa was still a bit left-field. It wasn't until the (Fiat) 156 arrived that Alfa hit the big volumes here. In perception if not reality. The 75 was left-field.... But in an excellent way; in the way that Citroen and Panhard and Saab used to be left-field. I do not recall the last time I saw a 75 on the road over here.... That is quite a sad thing to write. Good video! Evocative video! Excellent view of the interior, too... When these came out I was very young, driving a Citroen twin and riding a pretty but slow Morini. These sport sedans were a sort of impossible dream.

The 156 was (in Alfa Romeo terms) a massive hit indeed, with market share going up in pretty much every European market. The 75 was indeed much more than the sum of its parts, Italians loved it then and love it now... But it did not sell very well abroad, that's true.

This looks very similar to the 75 Twinspark LE that we got in the UK. A local garage owner and (ex motorcycle racer) had one when they were current as well as several older Alfas and other classics. I used to drive miles out of my way to buy petrol and talk Alfas with him...

In 1998, when I was just 18 years old, I got my first car, an 1989 Alfa 75 T. Spark. Back then, I was already a big Alfist (while my parents always drove VW’s and Audi’s) but was not that fond on the design of the 75. But It was the only decent performing Alfa I could afford back then. To this day, I still don’t understand my mother (I was still living under my parents roof) allowed me to drive such ‘high’ performance ‘dangerous’ rear wheel drive car. It was not a Numerata, but Some years later, I was able to buy a Numerata with 435000 km (!) on the clock for the equivalent of 250€. I swapped all Numerata parts to mine, and used the rest as a donor. In the end, all parts that I had to swap during the lifetime of my 75 were all ‘Made in Germany’. I remember that I had to swap the wiper motor. I dismounted it from my donor Numerata, and there was written ‘spider’ on it, so that Bosch part must have been remplaced on that car as well. The car started to grow on me and in the end, I drove it until 2007 when it was almost 19 years old and had 295000 km on the clock. Then, the car was really used up, and I replaced it by an 1998 Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0 V6 which I still drive to this day! Who says Italian cars are not reliable. By then, I got really attached to my 75 and I loved its looks and all of its quirks and features. I was able to store it somewhere for 5 more years, but unfortunately, it had to leave, and I had no other place to store it, so regrettably, I had to sell it. While my GTV is better in almost every aspect, I never loved it as much as my beloved 75. Over the years, my love for Italian cars expanded and besides my GTV, I currently also own a 1997 Maserati Ghibli GT and a 1978 Fiat X1/9 Serie Speciale. And as long as I live, I will never be without an Alfa Romeo, which is and remains my first and biggest love. With prices of an SZ that went up so much the last couple of years (and out of my reach), chances are that I will again buy an Alfa 75, preferably in Numerata spec. Man, I loved that car. Thank you so much for posting this video. The featured car looks so nice! Fond memories! Great KZbin channel.

Had 2 Alfa 75 models. 1st a 2 litre TS model , with sunroof, steel wheels , then later a 3 litre. Always preceded the smaller engined car ,as the V6 was more nose - heavy, and the in line 4 cylinder revved higher which added to the character. Still, I love the 75 model , I don't know how many exist in UK but can't be many. Prefer a 75 to any Ferrari !

Great video as always. I’m seriously thinking of adding a classic Alfa to my garage, which already contains two Alfas used as daily drivers. I had had my heart set on a GTV6 but I find myself leaning towards a 75 now as well. I just love the design. I’ve never heard anyone explain the design of the handbrake but I’m wondering if it was designed that way so that it would suit both LHD and RHD versions.

It was well made, good handling and rode well. I did 90,000 miles in my Twin Spark. Did I have any complaints ? Only one, I could get the brakes to fade too easily when driving fast in hilly country. Could you tell more about that particular unit shown on the video as it looks like brand new. All the interior and plastics in and out look just as the first day. It is a collectors unit? How did you find it to make the video? It is difficult to find any unit in such a perfect condition

It is indeed one of the best 75s I've ever seen, a true minter. But it's not a museum piece: it's done about 130.000 Km and it's so nice because it has had few owners who took really good care of it. I found it by complete chance: it simply passed by while I was filming another car, so I talked with the owner and arranged a shooting day for his 75 :) Good 75s aren't rare here in Italy, but you rarely see them on the street, as collectors keep them tucked away most of the time.

Personally speaking i prefer nova Giulia over 75 every single time! 😜😄😄 But it is undoubtedly one of the most characteristic midsize Alfa's of them all! Especially in this mint condition! 👌🏻 (Matteo, my eye cought by the background building...is it some kind of factory or appartments?)

I had an Alfa 75 in the early nineties, i LOVED that car but it was very unreliable. It would just randomly cut out and often wouldn't re-start that a number of mechanics and the Alfa dealership couldn't figure out. A beautiful drive though when it behaved.

Sorry to hear your 75 ownership was tainted by technical issues... But the most impressive thing is that nobody could figure it out! Sometimes dealerships and garages contribute to some cars' poor reputations, with their inability to service them properly.

Despite its questionable, probably parts bin inspired, ergonomics the butch, devil may care edgyness of the interior actualy reflects the exterior. The trick with the black door extensions was inpired but I would not have chosen for the kink in that line at the boot but would have used a single arc, propably widening it to the rear to get to the same height. Still that kink is very much part of the cars character. So who am I to judge? The surroundings are also great by the way. Is that a real classic Roman Via? Which one?

Great work again, Matteo. Bravo! Personally i call the 33, 75 and Giulietta AR’s «boxy models». Great cars all of them. I recon more 2.0 engines than cars have survived, as its a popular swap to the 105. PS: i think you shold tip of Doug DeMuro about the «quirks and features» in the 75. 😅

It's quite common for the surviving engines to outnumber the cars, with classic Alfa Romeos, as the engines were overengineered... While the bodies succumbed to rust all too easily! Well, not the 75: those were already well protected from the factory.

I had a 2L Twin Spark in white. I seem to remember it was a Lusso model. The main problem with it was spare parts once it was replaced with the 155. I had two of those also, both 2L twin sparks one narrow body and the other wide body. I remember my 75 fondly! A neighbour of mine, an Italian called Alberto had a garage that specialized in Alfas. He was a great help in the running of the cars!
@Matteo_Licata

Spare part supply (or lack thereof) is a real issue with all old cars, but it does seem especially the case with Italian cars, yes. I constantly hear from owners that parts are no longer available even for much newer cars than the 155. Unfortunately, that situation is only going to get worse as time passes

Hi Matteo, fantastic video as always! Wonderful tribute to a wonderful car! Question: is there a way of distinguishing unambiguously which 75 cars are actually ASNs? Like, is there a VIN list of ASN cars? My car has all the exterior and interior features of an ASN but it lacks the numbered plaque on the dash. Does anyone know this?
@Matteo_Licata
@Matteo_Licata 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, ASN cars did not have specific VIN numbers. But what is certain is that all ASN cars were built in 1991, so the VIN of a genuine ASN should be within the numbers ZAR162B00 06232501 and ZAR162B00 06255860. During 1991, almost all Turbos and most of the TSs were made to ASN spec. Does your car have a rectangular recess on the left of the "Alfa 75" trim piece where the lighter is? Because that's where the aluminum plaque should be. Maybe it was simply lost over the life of your car.
@hanspeeters3246
@hanspeeters3246 3 жыл бұрын
@@Matteo_Licata Thanks for this detailed reply! Its a '90 car with matricola 6213773. There is no recess in the dash where the plaque should be. It has all the nice bits of the ASN apart from the wheels since unfortunately it doesn't have its original rims anymore. I bought it quite recently and it probably has had a dozen owners before me. My goal is to make it as pristine as the one you featured in this video! Thanks again for all the good work. So far you've covered 8 cars that I have actually owned (or still own) so its always a pleasure and I guess our tastes are aligned! :-) Looking forward to your video about the A112 Abarth which I'm confident is on your to do list! :-)

What a beautifully sleek design the Alfa Romeo 75 was. I was fortunate enough to own a 5-6 yr old 2.5 green cloverleaf in '95. One of the best car's I've ever owned, barring the Alfasud 1.5 Ti of course. Also my BMW E28 M535i was fairly special.

We got the Milano here in Canada, but the beauty of the 75 was still there in that model. The 75/Milano and the GT V6 were my favourite Alfa Romeo's from the mid to late 1980's early 1990's, true classics from that era.

I really should make a video about the Milano, as Alfa went to great lengths to make it a success: built on a separate production line at Arese, the Milanos were built with greater care and were much better equipped than European 75s
