Organism is the name of that game. Organism for the Commodore 64. It's a game soaked in Alien lore (or something akin to it), albeit without an official licence, and I'm here to play the living hell out of it. Along with a review, I'll be exploring the Alien films and how they fascinated me, along with an collector's box unboxing, featuring the Organism disk, along with a load of goodies and the accompanying soundtrack.

There's something wonderfully perverse about a game stored on Floppy coming with it's soundtrack on CD.

Outrun on ZX Spectrum came with the soundtrack on audio cassette. Of course, this resulted in a perfect soundtrack (not 8bit) seemingly coming through the computer. Genius!

It was definitely a unique and exciting experience back then... I can vividly remember unboxing games, smelling the fresh ink on its contents, and totally immersed myself in the experience. Ahh the good 'ol days... Also, you guys may recall, that back in the 80s and early 90s, there were a lot of games released based on the movies.... that was just so cool. :)

@@ctw195 Seriously? I guess you have to be a retro gamer to come across these things. Every month there are several new ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Commodore Vic 20, Commodore 16, Commodore Pet, Amstrad CPC, Atari 8 bit computers, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, MSX, TRS 80, Tandy Color Computer etc etc games released... the majority are on the C64 and ZX Spectrum though. Many are released free to download, some a digital purchase and others get a full release with manual, box etc either on disk, cassette or cartridge - sometimes all three. Some even come in fancy packaging with loot etc - check out games like Sams Journey on the C64 etc. In fact, for the past couple of years I find myself buying more games for 8 bit systems of the 80's than PS4, Switch and Xbox One games.... and in many cases enjoying them more.

I tell you what. That "Alien" game, the one that was basically a real time game where you had to move your crew around the ship, fight the Alien, or get them off the ship, that game, to this day, is the closest that we've gotten to recreating the movie. And it does a damn good job. It really does re-create the movie perfectly (with the C64's limitations of course.). But the game is more of a pure and very abstract, real time strategy game, which a lot of people used to more.. let's face it, more arcade style stuff or more modern games, might not be looking for in a game. It's more like a computer board game with an invisible opponent and a fog of war. And as a board wargamer, I took to this game like a fish to water. My friends, however, I could never get to play it. But, to this day, that game still is the one that most faithfully captures the movie. It's the only one that really does.

@BlackburnBigdragon
@BlackburnBigdragon 5 жыл бұрын
Oh man. That's exactly how I used to play it, and the best way TO play it. Lights out. The only light coming from the screen. The sound of the heartbeats of the crew. Thump thump thump thump. They get faster and faster. You need to get them to repair that damage in that engine room. Ripley needs to catch that cat. Brett just found Dallas's body. Thumpthumpthumpthump! ... and.. "WOOOOO WOOOO WOOOO WOOOO WOOOO WOOOO WOOOOO WOOOO WOOOO!!!!!" I know exactly what you mean. Haha! That game made me tip over in my chair quite a few times. And the funny thing is, probably if kids today would watch a video of a let's play of it on KZbin nowadays, they just wouldn't understand or get that same "feel". You really have to be playing it and really have to be "In the moment" with that game. It's like a really intense real-time strategy boardgame with excellent escalating tension, and jumpscares. I don't know if kids today would understand this game or it would have the same effect as it had on us. But I've tried every new "Alien" game that's ever been made including "Isolation" and they ALL pale in comparison to the original C64 "Alien" for recreating the feel of the original movie for me. Maybe it's because I'm an old man. Haha!

I had my ankle grabbed by an actual alien from aliens. Not even kidding. I went to "Alien Wars" in London. Was AWESOME! FOr those who don't know what it was, it was a short lived tourist attraction where you were guided through a "facility" by a "Marine" and of course, all hell breaks loose. Strobes flicker, and the aliens attack. The suits and much of the "set" was made from an actual collection of movie props collected by the owner of the business.

Nobody had disk drives? I did, I worked my arse off in 1984 washing dishes in a local pub to raise £145 during the summer holidays as Rumbelows were selling their stock off cheap. All distant memories now, especially Rumbelows, but I'll never forget the joy of seeing a floppy drive take as long as a turbo-loader cassette to load a game. The exception to this was Lucas Arts' Koronis Rift (sequel to Rescue on Fractalus), which employed some kind of techno-voodoo to make disk loading *faster* than tape. When I say faster, it really was impressively fast, and while it made the drive sound like it was infested by woodpeckers the game genuinely loaded in seconds. Now that's one for the collection...

Try ''Alien Demon'' for the Commodore VIC 20, this is based on the original Alien film. You will need a map of the ship to play the game (I can sort this for you if needed). One of the items you need to find within the game is a cat just like the film, Ripley's cat called Jonesy. The game is playable on keyboard only but is very cool in a basic way. I played this game when I was a kid, I've recently revisited the game using emulators years later after missing the game so much ;)

Left an imprint on YOUR mind? My mother, in her infinite wisdom, decided it was perfectly fine to take an 8 year old (me) to see this in 1979. Dadeland, Kendall, FL. That shit fucked me up for life. Great movie.

You keep saying that the game nails the atmosphere but really that’s all just the packaging and presentation outside of the game. If the game throws you in with “immediate goals” and “immediate threats” then it is a fundamentally different atmosphere to Alien. It’s also strange to hear the ship repeatedly being called “silent” when it’s literally crawling with face huggers and xenomorph doppelgängers. It’s one of those things that feels good and sounds good to say in a review like this even though it’s fundamentally contradictory to reality. Not saying it’s a bad game or anything. Looks pretty sweet, actually!

This looks awesome! Might actually order it, it wouldn't be the first game I order from psytronic, great company. And yeah, isometric view is the best way to have a doom like game on an 8 or 16 bit machine.

Does this make anyone else think of Metroid on the NES? Not in terms of game play but it seems to have that same feeling of isolation and exploration.

@@The_Str4nger oh I know, but not all Alien games capture that vibe, you know? Metroid definitely got the right mood, and this game is definitely following in its footsteps in those terms.

Yes, I immediately thought of classic Metroid when I saw this. A small opportunity was missed to have more items like Metroid games, but I guess if your goal is simply escape, their might not be a motive for that design.

I feel less nerdy for have written an LCARS interface in qbasic back in the 90s. It was pretty much just a calendar and To Do List. Screw the monitor re-creation. I just need a wall full of not-so-random flashing lights.

I actually did own a disk drive. I'm from North America. They were very popular here. I never did own a tape game for the C64. Owned lots of them on the VIC-20 though.

Everyone keeps saying "Nobody in the UK had a floppy drive", but I don't know anyone who didn't, and I had 2 1541's O_o. They were so much better than the datasette it was practically an essential upgrade.

Interesting looking game. Licensed alien games have always been a bit poor but this just resembling alien gives it some freedom. Nice package though, perfectly nostalgic with genuine 90s or even 80s badges.

I think I might have bought this game back in my C-64 period even though I was never into action games except for simulations like Elite and Gunship which are my top 2 favorite C-64 games. I also liked adventure games, strategy games (Even if I never managed to beat the computer at Ogre or Tigers in the Snow (I suspect the game cheated in both of them), and turned based RPGs.

I’m 55 and I have pleasant memories of games on large floppies with proper game manuals and the added extras you usually got like posters, strange amulets etc etc I still play games mostly downloaded via Steam or PS4 but always feel cheated without a box and goodies Thanks for posting this gem

7:30 There is a lot to be said about limiting your medium in order to get your imagination a lot more involved. Your brain fills in exactly the detail that you want. That's why books can be better the movies if you read them first. That's the reason Alien is so dark haha.
