I didn't think I would enjoy the Chinese Object 122MT much, but it's actually a very fun tank. It is basically a better T-62 that has missiles and a laser rangefinder. Not only is the tank itself great, but it has a lot of great backup vehicles like the WZ305. I actually ended up putting a talisman on mine. I'm honestly not quite sure if it's overpowered or not, it's certainly very strong, but it doesn't seem to do great in uptiers. Another case of BR compression ruining things for everyone, I guess. I hope Gaijin adds more unique vehicles like this in the future.

The entire development process was documented in a 2017 Ordance Knowlege article written by one of the project manager on the team. No one was executed, and many from the project went on to work on ZTZ-80/ZTZ-88. In fact, from the article, one of the few positive outcome of joint-project 24 (WZ-122, WZ-132, WZ-212, WZ-532, 120mm gun and hydraulic suspension) is that is provide experience for young designer to work on projects without constraints, as later army project are extremely conservative for the next few decades. The chief designer, 张锐生, for WZ-122 is actually very famous in that he became a huge advocate for tank turbine engines development as well as pushing for merkava-like front mounted engines layout for WZ-123 (later bacome Type 99). The only designer that did die was the lead for WZ-532 (Type 63 APC replacement that never was), but because of execution, but becase of the test vehicle capsized on lake during fording tests, which took his life as well as several other crewmembers.

This is one of the research projects of China's second-generation main battle tank. The project started in 1967 and accelerated after the Sino-Soviet conflict in 1969. The first prototype was made in 1970, and the factory code was 122. This tank used hydraulic transmission, hydraulic control and hydro-pneumatic suspension system (so called "three-hydraulic vehicle"). But these technical performance requirements exceeded China's industrial capabilities, and this prototype was quickly abandoned in favor of more reliable torsion bar suspension, mechanical transmission, and mechanical control. The program was completely discontinued in 1974. Also, while I know this is a joke, I want to point out that the engineering team for this project was not executed😅 They began work on the development of WZ-1224 shortly after.

Nor does the quote below the article say more about the fate of the engineering team. In addition, the 1223 tank project was established in 1978, when the Cultural Revolution had ended for two years. Considering there are some other mistakes too (like wrong use of WZ naming) I personally think they got some Chinese sources wrong.

The WZ122 series was an attempt to develop a tank by the 5rd mechanics division（五机部）, with the intension to develop a tank that would rival and defeat the T-62s in the 1970s(similar to how the PTZ-89 is meant to promptly fuck up T-72s a mile away), so saying its a better T-62 wont be exactly wrong, edit: this seems like to be a mixture of two tanks, the turret and the hull seems to be from differnt prototypes Quick fact, the gun used on the WZ122, being an enlarged 2A11 tank gun, is the first 120mm smmothbore tank gun in the world, even prior to the L/44, which was eventually brought by China too and is used on the L/50 of the type 89 In war thunder the fact that it is 8.3 is all it matters: its only France and China that has a great 8.3 lineup

Yea, this... thing. You should make a "historically accurate" video about it, it would be very, very long. The model we have in game is an absolute abomination - it's less historical than the one in World of Tanks, and that's quite an "achievement". It has a couple of problems: - It's name is wrong - I'll skip all the crap that's after the number, it's kinda complicated, but I believe it shouldn't be there. But what *definitely* shouldn't be there is the word "Object" - it's a Soviet/Russian designation for prototypes, it never existed in the Chinese nomenclature. It should just be called "122" or "122-1". - And why I said "or" above? Well, that's the best part - we don't even know which variant of the vehicle it is! The vehicle named "122" had several iterations, but the ones that we are interested are the first three: "122", "122-1" and "122-2". The first variant, the "122" was the most advanced one with hydropneumatic suspension, hydraulic transmission and hydraulic controls (hence it's also referred to as "triple hydraulic"), it shares the turret with the in-game model. It however had a different hull, as the variant in game has "mechanical controls". The second variant, the "122-1" was the simplest one with mechanical suspension, transmission and controls (this one is thus called "triple mechanical"), I believe it is the closest to the in-game model as both the hull and the turret fit, but the big issue is that the original 122-1 had the ATGM launchers removed. The third variant, the "122-2" was the mix between the two previous models, and it's also the WoT variant. It had mechanical controls and ATGM launchers, but it also had an autoloader, so the turret looked different.

I wouldn't call it an "absolute abomination" since the only major issue with the model is it being fitted with the ATGM launchers, since the model overall is the 1221. The 1222 variant is a questionable thing, it is merely speculated that the single remaining tank with the autoloader is the 1222, since there's no other tank that could fill the gap between the 1221 and 1223.

No. That would ruin the game. I hate CAS with a burning passion, but there are genuinely some moments where the game becomes more of a stalemate without it. Without CAS, matches would also be decided basically at the start of the game. Imo, we need to buff the M163, since the radar on it is unbeleivably unreliable. You could be staring at something, and it would take atleast 10 tries to actually get a lock, which by that time, the target flew away out of range. I think CAS should be more of a killstreak option. The fact someone can go on an AML90, capture a point, get 1 kill, and instantly die only to spawn in a ATGM heli is bullshit.

this thing is also in World of Tanks as the "122-TM" though there obviously it's ATGMs do not function. Though for a medium tank at tier VIII it had great armor and a high alpha damage, but one of the worst reloads at tier VIII for its caliber.

For anyone is interested, Object 122 or 3 machanics as ppl usually refer it to in Chinese was one of the three on going tank development lines in China along side the ZTZ-59 line and ZTZ-69 line. It’s more of a experimental project aside from those two lines in the 80s.

fancy star embossed front mudguards. the atgms being mounted forward a bit like that rather than on top would hopefully mean that if they blow due to enemy fire the turret front armor should help protect you better than thin roof armor, but reloading these would be a bit tougher

wait... putting ATGM's and modern sensors on old tanks seems like a great idea. There are plenty of vehicles made from old tank hulls but upgraded with autocannons and sensors after all. A number of tanks have had ATGMs. Centurions and AMX13s come to mind. I wonder how efficient this would is vs buying/making light vehicles.

yugoslavia did a similar thing to some of theirs since they could not get the gun launched ones from the soviet union, you can occasionally find images of them but they were widely used

? What little I know & having ✓'d the tech tree, the Object 122 could lead into a type 80. 🤔 I only bring this because I still harbor a belief that the TR-85 in some way came from the type 80.

I feel like North Korean tanks would definitely perform way better in War Thunder than most vehicles of their BR just due to the fact that they have a bunch of MBTs with ATGMs with even the brand new 2020 Popkung-Ho IV featuring two launchers on the right side of the turret. If your 2A46 doesn't do the job, a Kornet probably will. Though, I guess the balance would be overall worse/older ammunition. I sure do want to see an Abrams fight a Storm IV.

@@bigoof1105 Exactly, while completely a product of lower quality technology and smaller industrial capability in real life, in a game you it simply makes you a jack of all trades. Some of the Chonma-Ho and earlier Popkung-Ho models also get a twin 14.5mm heavy MG which would also shred helicopters and armored cars. Some also get twin 30mm grenade alunchers, though those wouldn't do much in game. Surprisingly, laser warning receivers appear to be present on some vehicles too. I think most of them would in nicely fighting the later variants of the M60 and whatever also sits at that BR. Now imagine something like the M1978 Koksan was added, bringing in the second largest cannon in the game so far. That's enough HE to kill two vehicles at one.
