Only a few exceptions like Elden Ring or Metal Gear Solid Collection for PS5 requires downloads. Otherwise, most Nintendo Switch first and third party cartridges still come with the whole game and I’d say 95% of the PS5 physical games out there can be played and beaten without the additional updates.

Imagine my surprise as a person whos had this happen to for games I owned on steam but required ubisofts login stuff for SP games and know friends who have had similar had game keys revoked and told to rebuy the game if you want to play it just because you didn't play the game in a long enough time. Until that system changes and you aren't buying a license anymore then this will keep happening. Is that going to happen anytime soon? Probably not no, the implications for software are too big.

Then years later, can't play it. One of my friends I forget what game it was for them. I'd have to ask but I'm pretty sure its SP since he mostly only streams SP games so he's a very SP oriented gamer, so most likely another SP game.

Unfortunately, since there's no direct law against revoking licenses and there's probably something in the EULA, developers will revoke licenses to paid games if it benefits them. However if a specific developer does this often, gamers might just flat out boycott all releases from said developer in case it happens again.

Actually there is since January 2022. European people have the right to refund their digital purchase for full price if they cannot get access to their license. I'm very surprised that out of all the big company's it's European Ubisoft who plays with the fire that is called EU law. Maybe european owners of the Crew actually got a refund automatically without them noticing. It would explain that their license vanished because that is part of the refund process.

At this point I actually wish I did buy "The Crew" when it was available, only so I could have the opportunity to directly participate in the formation of the current Super Weapon against Ubi rather than just cheering the effort from the sidelines. As we head to an all digital future it seems like piracy will only increase as people are literally forced to download a delisted game as it becomes impossible to actually purchase anywhere legitimately. You don't own the game though. You own a license to access the game, that they can revoke anytime. Sony removed a bunch of TV Shows that people bought in Germany some months ago. They revsered some of them I recall but some are still gone even if you purchased them. The same is true of physical, you don't own the software. You own the disk, which acts as a license to access the software but the diffyis they can't take it away from you unless they patch a kill switch to the console or make it reliant on online activation. As for piracy, it exists but is becoming harder and harder. Denuvo is very good and new consoles are hard to pirate. It will still exist but the industry is getting better and better at reducing it especially at the AAA level where they use the high level version of Denuvo and those games are getting cracked later and less and less.

Thanks again for the mention! You talking about exploratory territory into the legality of Ubisoft's actions is exactly what we're aiming for. As for my twitter comment, I get your logic, but the wizards among us who can (maybe) create server emulators would have had their copy long before having it revoked anyway. The reason I'm not focusing on it as much is because if Ubisoft lost on that, then all that would happen would be is that they're required to give you access to a bricked game, but can still brick your game. We're aiming for all or nothing, not crumbs from companies that took your money. Either these actions start actually saving games or it all goes down in flames, I'm not taking any compromise that still destroys games people paid for.

Ubisoft is definitely doing this on purpose. They know someone will release a private server and they don’t want that. So their response is basically you can’t access your files. I also think Ubisoft is trying to leave a path open in case they want to re-release The Crew as a remaster on future consoles. Of course at full box price. I’m honestly done with this company. I don’t care what they have to offer anymore. I’m not giving them another cent.

Not necessarily, pretty much all games are incomplete without updates these days. They can also lock physical games out. If you buy a GT Sport disc right now isn't it pretty much unusable without updates?

@@jjgator205 95% of the games work completely fine without any updates. GT Sport is one of the weaker entry's of the series. So not much value has been lost. GT 4 was peak. And that's still fully preserved on disc.

That's most likely all dependant on Square Enix and is probably out of Nintendo's control. Also, as has been pointed out, it's doubtful that FF6 will be added since it's already available on Switch via the Pixel Remasters. Same with Secret of Mana since that's also already on Switch via Collection of Mana. As for Secret of Evermore, Square kinda tends to pretend that game doesn't exist. In fact, given that it was never released in Japan, a lot of modern Square Enix developers may genuinely not even know it exists.

From a legal perceptive if it says buy or purchase or buy now then that overrides the fine print if it says lease. Courts have already reviewed this in the past on other issues and said a company cannot mislead the customer. That would be like a car company saying you're purchasing a car but then putting in the fine print that it's a lease and later after you pay 40 grand for it they come and pick it up in 3 years. The fine print does not override the original sale purchase.

I don’t do digital at all but wondering about updates and patches, do they ever expire from being able to get them later. I have a massive backlog of games. I buy a lot of games all the time. Lmao, regret? Not everyone is like you and can comfortably live without video games. It’s called going out and touching grass. Should there be laws updated to protect consumers? Sure. But let’s be real, everyone always has a choice of not buying digital and no sane individual is losing sleep over game preservation. No sane individual would lose sleep over game preservation. As an equities investor of 10+ years and a gamer, if my bottom line is continually met then I’m good. If not, I am debt free anyway and can still enjoy games (particularly physical). Win-win. Physical or digital, I really don’t care.

@@cbgg1585 it wont be continuous if they keep laying off the devs making their product and hiring the cheaper green ones and gutting their products then telling the customer to get bent. Eventually people stop buying, and the company folds or gets bought and dissolved. Then the ones who were booted go on to do things their way, starting as a skeleton crew working out of passion for the craft and people go to them instead. Laugh now, atari thought they were too big to fail, this is a sign of a storm coming for ubi specifically because a jenga tower eventually falls when you pull out the foundation trying to make it taller. The difference between sustainable growth and reinvestment versus number go up at any costs is long term viability. Look at ubi's stock ticker over the last several years and look how the spike becomes a cliff multiple times over.

I just replayed it for the first time since 2015 on Steam Deck a couple months ago. It’s still weak as a RPG, but the gameplay still holds up really well. I was blown away by how well it performed on Deck.

Ubisoft only made one mainline assassins creed game that was complete on disc. The first one in 2007. That was the only one without dlc, micro transactions, or a stupid pre order “bonus” that was actually cut content. (The psp and ds style games don’t really count imo )

You can create a Japanese account and download the Japanese versions of the NES, SNES etc and use your regular account to launch it and play the games only on the Japanese region ones.
