If you took the engine out of the casing, made an adapter plate for a car transmission, you’d be able to stick it in a car. It’s got the potential to be an awesome hot rod engine, put it in something like a 1940 Ford or a Willys coupe.

Based on the engine specs it seems to be closely related to the J-series automotive engine. The BF250 was already closely related to the J35 and this seems to be that but with 2 extra cylinders, hence the same SOHC 4v per cylinder VTEC valvetrain.

My only concern when it comes to Honda's, and Suzuki's for that matter, is service centers. There just aren't enough of them, or qualified tech's. At least compared to Yamaha and Mercury. I'm sure it's a great outboard. Just won't be seeing them on any inland waters. And coastal waters will be limited to where they can be easily serviced.

@@joephysics5469 It's not even that. The U.S. market for outboards is heavily Yamaha and Mercury. Honda and Suzuki are very popular overseas. For every US dealer that sells Honda outboards there are 10 that sell Yamaha and/or Mercury. So it doesn't make sense to buy a Honda or Suzuki depending on where you are, or how local the nearest service center is.

@@riccochet704 You are correct. My comment was generalized to indicate there is a shortage of trained mechanics across the nation. That includes marine techs. That also drives up the cost. Simple supply and demand.

slight error - it's single *overhead* cam - one cam per bank of 4cyl, so each of the 2 cams runs 16v.

You can use conventional hydraulic steering. Most of the boats were fitted with dometic steering.

I'm sure Honda puts out a good product but I'd prefer to stay with the brands that are more popular and proven.

Not for nothin, but Honda has made 4 stroke outboards for way longer than any other outboard manufacturer. They were the first. And they are very reliable, well made engines. Also, they do way way more development on their engines before release. So by the time they get to the customer there are no bugs to work out. Which puts them behind the other companies in the innovation category. But you can bet this new motor will be a good one in this category.
