The Allman Brothers Band's song "Blue Sky" was written by Dickey Betts about his then-girlfriend and later wife, Sandy "Bluesky" Wabegijig. The song appears on the band's 1972 album Eat a Peach. "Blue Sky" is a love song with a catchy guitar riff and a country-esque feel. It features alternating lead guitar performances by Betts and Duane Allman, with Betts's solo at 2:37

This brings me back to growing up in the Bay Area in the 70s. This was on the radio all the time, along with Beatles, Wings, Eagles, and of course the local Sly and the Family Stone along with so many other greats. Impressive era to grow up in on the radio. Sure left an impression on me.

For me, the greatest band ever incredible musicians second to none it was written about Dickey’s girlfriend, Sandy Blue Sky, a Cherokee Indian beauty witch Dickey is part Cherokee . Eat a peach album is a wonderful mix of the first studio recordings after Duane’s death +2/3 of the double album is from at the Fillmore East I dare you to play mountain jam and it is a jam with one of the greatest bass solos you’ll ever hear, Berry Oakley does not get the credit he deserves.A double albums, sold at the price of a single album which Duane insisted on. Since you raise the question Duane is always in the left headphone Dicky in the right. I hope you do a lot more of this album you won’t regret it. One other thing it is the first song Dickie ever saying on. He didn’t want to sing on it and Duane told him this is your song you sing it

One of my all-time favorite songs. One of the best guitar solos ever. Like you said, you forget that there are verses that are sung -it's a whole song in itself, and every note is perfect. It's not a 'jamming' solo, it's like one long, ever-changing melody. And the verse/chorus section is fantastic as well. It doesn't get much better than this. I have a very clear memory of driving down Hines Drive (a long, winding road that spans 20 miles just outside of Detroit, it's called Hines Park and there are picnic areas, pavilions, turnoff dirt roads, baseball diamonds... all along the road) on a beautiful warm, late spring day back in the 80's. The windows were down and this came on the radio and I was just soaking in the beautiful spring day and one of my all-time favorite songs.

Wife here. My favorite song to do walking at the track on a summer day. Those guitars such a beautiful jam!
@adamkenney6932Күн бұрын
A big element of that guitar sound is the way they play their scales and bend their notes. They use all the notes at their disposal and don't often just stick with pentatonic stuff, like many classic rock bands do. I think it's that jazz influence - a willingness to play around certain guitar shapes and squeeze as much out as they can. Very melodic players.

Smooth as a baby's ass. One of the Allman's calling cards is both Dickie and Duane loved to find a spot on the fretboard and just play as many inversions and variations they could before moving on to another spot and doing the same thing. This song is probably the best example of that. Unfortunately, it was also one of the last examples. 😢😢

You know you have made it as a musician when you have a scale renamed after you. 😁 The major hexatonic scale used by Dicky in songs like Jessica and Blue Sky is otherwise known as "The Dicky Betts scale" in many musical circles.

Well it's about darn time !! 😊 As many 70's-ers know, this song ... the --- those -- guitar solos will sound better and better upon repeated listenings. This "solo" and the one on Boston's "Hitch A Ride" talk to you. They are telling a story. They are extended lyrics. "Blue Sky" blew my mind when I first heard it. And obviously I ain't the only one who was impacted this way by this iconic monster of a track. "Hitch A Ride" hit me the same way. 2 other songs that have lyrical guitar solos but not quite as eloquent as the aforementioned ones are Styx' "Crystal Ball" ( main knock on this one is it's brevity ), and The Little River Band's "It's A Long Way There." Eagle's "Hotel California " is a no-brainer here.
@alconstantineau1063Күн бұрын
FIrst solo, almost always is Duane - that high, searing, achingly pure sound. Then Dickie comes in, tone more subdued but lot more funky little doodles that make your head bob. Both are fabulously melodic, kick-ass guitar players, Allman a bit more majestic and soaring, Betts more of a sweet country/funk feeling. Almsot always, though, Duane solos first on these cuts. Love your reviews, guys!
@alconstantineau1063Күн бұрын
As a Part 2 follow-up, now review "Jessica," which came along just after Duane died and the Allmans brought in ace session pianist Chuck Leavell who has played over the years with Clapton, Rolling Stones, etc. Long, melodic/funky guitar work by Dickie Betts and fabulous, rolling bluesy funk piano from Chuck Leavell. One of the best "Driving down the highway on a sunny day" songs ever recorded!
