It matters. The Allman Brothers without Duane were a cover band. They degraded what Duane achieved. There was no replacing Duane. He arranged all the songs, wrote the solos and had incredible ears trained at FAME. Duane Allman BB greatest of all time. Greg Allman BB was rated at 50 in list of bands. Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell hire a black guitarist and tour as the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Same thing with Duane.

In 13 months after this concert, Duane would be gone and a year after that, Barry would be gone. Both crashed on their motorcycles within a mile of same spot of road and buried next to each other. Barry never had a day of peace, unable to get over Duane's death. After all these decades, it all still breaks my heart. They had only just begun. Their music got me thru my late teens, they showed me what real music was and were a direct influence on what I loved to listen to ever since. Each band member had top-shelf musicianship. Now Gregg is buried with them. Was wonderful that after so many years, he got clean, kept on with his music and helped others. He was a very grateful sober man.

And the same canned beat on all of it. Now, take "we can work it out" from the Beatles. It has 3 different time signatures and a key change within a 3&1/2 minute song. One thing I rarely see amongst the comments is the observation that this was a time of fertile cross pollination between many genres. Folk, electric, country, jazz, soul were being blended by Miles, Sly, Jimi, the Byrds after Gram joined were progenitors of what became country rock. The late 60’s were a volatile magical time and the early 70’s extended it. These guys got back together and began their long stand of shows at the Beacon and night after night, they were like Duke Ellingtons band, playing the repertoire just a little different, sometimes a lot different in the solos and order of who played first. Seeing this footage just reminds me of how much we lost after Duane rode into the sunset. Shalom

RIP Dickey - Been a Huge Fan of the ABB since back in High School in the 70's. Live at the Fillmore Album was the Best Live Album Ever. I used to have a Train Caboose in my Back Yard where we all Partied & Tripped out. Spent many hours listening to Live at the Fillmore Album. Thanks for all the Good Times. ABB Stole the show at Woodstock 2 back in "94". Say "Hi" to Duane & the Brothers for me. See you in the Next World..

I am grateful that we have these videos so available. Watching Duane play is amazing. I know the video was filmed in 1970, but when a guitarist is playing a solo, I would focus on the guitar - the entire guitar - where Duane is creating the amazing magic.
@davedawave47052 жыл бұрын
Cameramen and video editors to this day rarely have a clue about how to focus on the soloist. Diane is ripping and they show Dickey. Very irritating .

as much of an impact that duane and dickey's twin lead guitar stuff had on the sound of their music, the absolute powerhouse freight train that was butch and jaimoe had every bit as much an impact on the sound of this band. There aren't very many drummers who you could identify with no other musical context, but you can instantly identify this drum section as butch and jaimoe without any doubt. The ABB simply would not be what it was without those two back there laying a rock solid foundation on every tune. That sound they had was incredible even just by itself, but paired with the rest of the top notch musicians in that band it became even more alive and powerful. There has not ever been a drumming duo quite like those two.

@STSGuitar16 Жыл бұрын
@@BlindVeganRescue lmao what style is that? These days you’d can’t even hear Mickey in the mix (of course, he does play with a handful of uncooked spaghetti in each hand as drum sticks, which probably plays a part in how quiet he is now lol) to be able to discern a style 😂. He just bangs around on a bunch of bongos and djembes and stuff seemingly with no real rhyme or reason nowadays lol

You're right, I was thinking they play like a couple of jazz drummers back there with this song. Finessed it.
@STSGuitar169 ай бұрын
@@1viridis I also recommend checking out Bill Kreutzman’s drumming in the Grateful Dead from 1972. He had a totally unique and jazzy style that is every bit as cool as Butch and Jaimoe, imo. Billy is right up there with Butch and Jaimoe for sure.

1970 what a year. God blessed us with the gift called the Allman Brothers Band. Duane was the angel to what God called the prophet. I was 13 that year. My sister was going to this show. I wanted to go so bad it hurt. Things eventually worked out very well and I had the pleasure of seeing them at Watkins Glen in 73. Me and 600,000 strong. Tripped right thru it. Amazing simple amazing.

This still sits perfectly and sounds great after 54 years….notice that there are no dancers, choreography or bullshit…..just great music performed by cutting edge musicians - songs that demand to be heard over and over. Duane was 24 when he left is and boy did he leave a huge swath of burned earth in his wake…..a natural and tremendous player that worked inside the the music instead of on top of it - as so many of today “shredder” players do. You could play 1,000 notes per beat at 220 bpm and still Duane wins…..and Dickey then comes and smacks ya around for being a goof. Dickey was also tremendous and in my opinion played even more inside the music and structure with outstanding phrasing

These 6 young men were creating a part of American culture and history . Arguably , the Allman Brothers Band were the start of a whole new type of music . American art and a new way of looking at The Blues and the South's, African , American heritage . Rock and Roll had its roots in the South , and ABB made it pure .

Duane playing slide was like listening to someone’s soul singing, without boundaries or inhibitions. He gave the electric guitar a human voice, a human soul. Whether he was shrieking, or mourning, or announcing his youthful manhood with a kind of swaggering exuberance that was all his own, he sang to all of us thru that instrument, for the ages.

The 3/4 time signature and tempo of Dreams is such a fantastic treat. A Southern rock Waltz.
@jpalberthoward92 жыл бұрын
Amen to that. If you haven't already heard it, see if you can find John Coltrane's version of "My Favorite Things" it's also a triplet 3/4 time feel, and Coltrane takes a very ordinary show tune from "The Sound of Music" and transforms it into something that Rogers and Hammerstein would never have dreamed of in a million years. If you play it, and then listen to "in Memory of Elizabeth Reed" back to back, you'll be pleasantly surprised. You might notice a whole other level of Allman Brother genius. The boys definitely had large ears and well tuned radar.
