My cousin married in New Orleans, I want to say in 1968 outside of City Park Stadium and the Allman Brothers were playing. They invited all the wedding memebrs to their concert. It was the first time I ever heard of them and have been a huge fan ever since. I was very lucky in life to see them 12 times.

I've never understood why fans...followers of ABB insist on going back and forth about who is better than whom. Does it really matter?!? None of this glorious music would exist in the form we all love without each and every one of the guys. Duane, Dickey...both guitar GODS. Why can't that be the one and only answer?!?

It matters. The Allman Brothers without Duane were a cover band. They degraded what Duane achieved. There was no replacing Duane. He arranged all the songs, wrote the solos and had incredible ears trained at FAME. Duane Allman BB greatest of all time. Greg Allman BB was rated at 50 in list of bands. Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell hire a black guitarist and tour as the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Same thing with Duane.

In 13 months after this concert, Duane would be gone and a year after that, Barry would be gone. Both crashed on their motorcycles within a mile of same spot of road and buried next to each other. Barry never had a day of peace, unable to get over Duane's death. After all these decades, it all still breaks my heart. They had only just begun. Their music got me thru my late teens, they showed me what real music was and were a direct influence on what I loved to listen to ever since. Each band member had top-shelf musicianship. Now Gregg is buried with them. Was wonderful that after so many years, he got clean, kept on with his music and helped others. He was a very grateful sober man.

I encourage us all to take a moment to note that this was only 5 days after Jimi Hendrix's untimely death. His autopsy was performed on September 21st, and he was not buried until October 1st-- he wasn't even in the ground yet. So the death of Hendrix would have been a heavy and fresh reality in the hearts and minds of these fellow true musicians. There's that little extra dark depth to this beautiful performance-- you can feel it... Rest in peace to all the departed... We will all be together again soon enough...

Yeah, it's all pretty cut and dried these days. You can thank the endless quest for digital perfection, auto tune, beat detective, Cutting and pasting without playing the song all the way through. If you do that long enough, the next generation won't have the faintest idea how to improvise. Most people are used to being micromanaged and told what to do from womb to tomb anyway. ......I think real jamming and improvisation would scare most people nowadays.

@@mjwolosz9224 to my ears, it's ridiculous, monotonous robot noise. It never changes tempo, there are no breaks, no key changes no bridges, no solos, no instruments except for the same digital keyboard presets on every song (?) What do you call this stuff anyway? And the same canned beat on all of it. Now, take "we can work it out" from the Beatles. It has 3 different time signatures and a key change within a 3&1/2 minute song. Within that short time span, it takes you on a little musical journey, and back home again like a good composition should do. If they heard this drivel that passes for music today, I think Duane and the boys would probably either laugh or throw up.

One thing I rarely see amongst the comments is the observation that this was a time of fertile cross pollination between many genres. Folk, electric, country, jazz, soul were being blended by Miles, Sly, Jimi, the Byrds after Gram joined were progenitors of what became country rock. The late 60’s were a volatile magical time and the early 70’s extended it. These guys got back together and began their long stand of shows at the Beacon and night after night, they were like Duke Ellingtons band, playing the repertoire just a little different, sometimes a lot different in the solos and order of who played first. Seeing this footage just reminds me of how much we lost after Duane rode into the sunset. Shalom

@@reddove108 one thing Duane was listening to and I’m sure the others, was Miles Davis Kind of Blue. You’re certainly on point with your comment. The late 60’s and early 70’s saw the birth of country rock, jazz fusion, funk and rock and soul….an amazing time to be alive if you had adventurous tastes/ears. Prog also came out and was great to a point and then became over bearing in self import and ego

@@michaelbrickley2443 I can see that with Duane. For Betts I was hearing traces of East/West" with Bloomfield and Bishop fronting Butterfield. Also towards the end where Betts is waving his palm over the pickuos, which I read as a jazz-like attempt to create new kinds of sounds. I was too young to see Duane but lucky to see Gregg twice and Dickey once. Sone of that playing can really hit home.

That crying tone in Duane's guitar always makes me feel high. And Butch and Jaimo are hypnotic. Berry was a master of rhythm, creating his own atmosphere behind the lead instruments. So sorry Greg's mike was off. Listened to this on vinyl as a teenager when we couldn't know about the technical difficulties. There never was a better incarnation of this band. RIP Duane, Berry, Butch and Greg. And, yeah, when Dickie is your rhythm guitarist, it really puts you on your game.

as much of an impact that duane and dickey's twin lead guitar stuff had on the sound of their music, the absolute powerhouse freight train that was butch and jaimoe had every bit as much an impact on the sound of this band. There aren't very many drummers who you could identify with no other musical context, but you can instantly identify this drum section as butch and jaimoe without any doubt. The ABB simply would not be what it was without those two back there laying a rock solid foundation on every tune. That sound they had was incredible even just by itself, but paired with the rest of the top notch musicians in that band it became even more alive and powerful. There has not ever been a drumming duo quite like those two.

This still sits perfectly and sounds great after 54 years….notice that there are no dancers, choreography or bullshit…..just great music performed by cutting edge musicians - songs that demand to be heard over and over. Duane was 24 when he left is and boy did he leave a huge swath of burned earth in his wake…..a natural and tremendous player that worked inside the the music instead of on top of it - as so many of today “shredder” players do. You could play 1,000 notes per beat at 220 bpm and still Duane wins…..and Dickey then comes and smacks ya around for being a goof. Dickey was also tremendous and in my opinion played even more inside the music and structure with outstanding phrasing

Duane playing slide was like listening to someone’s soul singing, without boundaries or inhibitions. He gave the electric guitar a human voice, a human soul. Whether he was shrieking, or mourning, or announcing his youthful manhood with a kind of swaggering exuberance that was all his own, he sang to all of us thru that instrument, for the ages.

Amen to that. If you haven't already heard it, see if you can find John Coltrane's version of "My Favorite Things" it's also a triplet 3/4 time feel, and Coltrane takes a very ordinary show tune from "The Sound of Music" and transforms it into something that Rogers and Hammerstein would never have dreamed of in a million years. If you play it, and then listen to "in Memory of Elizabeth Reed" back to back, you'll be pleasantly surprised. You might notice a whole other level of Allman Brother genius. The boys definitely had large ears and well tuned radar.
