First saw them in 1971 at The Warehouse in New Orleans. They started playing that night at 9:00 PM. I remember waking up at 2:00 AM and Duane was taking a break to re-string. I walked out of a side door into a blinding Sunday morning sunrise at 5:00 AM and they were still playing. No one like them since. They were Masters of Music.Period.

I haven't done acid since '98. I hitchhiked from upstate NY to Macon, Ga. I planned on spending a couple of weeks there. I spent almost 2 years there. I was in my 20s. I split with the girl I was staying with and was staying with a "friend" He told me he did a whole sheet at Woodstock 2. One night he asked me if I wanted to dose and I said sure. He ripped off 2 10 strips and said let's do'em. We did. 2 days later I had to call in work cause I was still wiggin' nuts. Shrooms are a gift from the Creator. Can't say I'll always do'em. However, at this stage of the game, can't say I'll quit, either. Shrooms area vital part of getting in touch with the core of the soul. As, I think, all hallucinigenics are. Peace

From an article on Butch Trucks: It was onstage, where the group's ability to meld into one unit - when they were "hitting the note," to use a phrase they said often in the Seventies - was best on display. "Hittin' the note is reaching that point where you can't do any wrong," Trucks once said, according to Skydog."With us, when we're playing music, it's where the brain goes away and the body just does what it's supposed to do, and there's no thought and there's no question, and no matter what you do, it's right. It's getting to that spiritual level where the communication is total, but it's not mental."

+AOB actually I'm almost positive that's Duane playing. He does a lot of his characteristic double stops and double bends and you can tell he plays continuously through after his slide solo. He uses similar licks in the You Don't Love Me/Soul Serenade cut.

+Erik Braun Yes, Duane is most certainly playing the lead during the section that I referenced in my original comment. I turned 62 this year, and if I lived to be 162, I will never tire of listening to EAP and Mountain Jam. Grew up in NE FL and ABB was ingrained into our youth in so many ways. I think each of us pauses and flashes back to a time and event when we hear our ABB song - mine was Mountain Jam. I believe this is what heaven will sound like when I get there. No other words to describe the incredible music and almost reverence for these sounds they made.Had the pleasure / honor of seeing ABB too many times to count in my days and due to forces beyond my control that "went up in smoke", while my memories may be a bit blurred, the effects of listening are not. RIP Skydog and Barry-see ya on the other side down the road.Also, if you're a ABB fan and you ever find yourself near Macon, GA, be sure to stop in at the Big House museum in Macon. Incredible tales and memorabilia that's been displayed there. Easy to spend a few hours looking over the house.

No musical acts of today can come close to the great rock bands of the 70's. I feel sorry for the youth of today that missed the great talent and musical legends of rock and roll. How does anyone give a thumbs down to this great impromptu jam unless one does not like long jams, instrumentals or electronic rock. Mountain Jam is the best electronic symphony without sheet music ever!

As a young guy learning how to cook, I use this song to judge how much better I'm getting. "Oh yeah, It only took me a half a Mountain Jam to make lunch for both of us." "I managed to listen to Mountain Jam twice in the time it took to make this pasta. Sausages took longer than expected." "Only took one Mountain Jam to get this plate sorted out"

This came out right after I returned from a tour in Vietnam. The first time I heard it realized where the title came from.....Donavon's classic hit "First There Was a Mountain". Of course, the Allman Brothers added much more to it and made it a classic rock hit. Eat A Peach was an awesome album, my friends.

Listening to them for 45 years. Live at Fillmore incomparable musicianship, rock, blues, jazz all rolled into one on the extended work. Also, Greg-blue eyed soul at its best. RIP Duane and Berry.

I must say, this recording deepened my appreciation for instrumental music, and for that I will always be grateful. Duane Allman's slide guitar solo after the bass feature, halfway through the piece was the first wordless music to make me shed a tear. Jaimoe and Butch Trucks are extraordinary throughout and opened my mind to jazz and the full texture of what drums sets can conjure. Gregg Allman's playing is supportive like a beautiful persian rug in a majestic, opulent room. Dickey Betts reaching on guitar, huge ears and his tone is wonderful. He is so underrated. The perfect foil and partner to Duane. Berry Oakley on bass with that big felt pick....moving it all along while being melodic and funky. Exquisite. I can't be objective about it. I will listen to it in it's entirety while cleaning the kitchen and making dinner for later. thanks and praises

That slide solo, at least the tail end of it, is Will the Circle Be Unbroken - an old traditional country-ish song.

Eat a Peach -- side 4 is some of the best guitar music ever recorded. Duane Allman and Dicky Betts were so in sync with each other when they were performing that it was as though they had rehearsed every riff before taking the stage; but it was all spontaneous improvisation. They had played together live for so long, they intertwined their guitar riffs effortlessly. Duane had already found his drummer, Jaimo, and was trying to lure Berry Oakley away from Jacksonville's " The Second Coming", but Oakley would not join Duane's band without Dicky Betts, the guitarist for The Second Coming. We are all fortunate that Berry Oakley stood his ground and brought these two guitar giants together. Long live the music of the Allman Brothers !!

Not only was Duane Allman a savant virtuoso, he told stories with his guitar, which separated him from just about every other great guitarist.

I remember listening to this when I was 14. My dad brought home this album. He actually had on vinyl but it didn't last so he got the CD copy of it. The whole 33 minutes of this jam, my mouth was opened, my eyes staring at the sound system in a trance, my ears clinging on to and savouring every note. It's the only mega-extended jam I know of that never bored me for even one second from start to finish.

american music. don't you just love it? this was the pinnacle of the blues soul jazz rock band whatever you feel like calling it electric guitar drums bass and keyboards dancing and tripping and psychic wandering kind of music. and all it ever said was groove. the message. as it is and ever shall be. just groove man. bring it down from the mountain to the street and slide it down the alley to the jook joint so we can dance all night to the sound of the water and the trees in the dark with our friends and our lovers and forget the city. a dedication to the peace and tranquility of our original soul using the tools at their disposal to the best of their ability god bless them, the Allman Brothers Band.

21:00 - 30:00 may be the BEST 9 minutes of pure RnR ever put down on record. No studio "help", no redubs or retakes... just nine minutes of the best music I have ever heard. I thought so 40 years ago when I first bought "Eat a Peach" and I still think so today.

An amazing thing about this recording is that band members have said this was not one of their best performances of the song (Butch says he thinks it was one of the worst!), but that it was the only one they had with Duane on it. Duane's emotional transition in the midst of his solo at 3:33 is iconic.

This was my favorite music when we would take off to the Mountains to spend a few days getting back to what really mattered. Spending time with a few good friends and taking in the best that Mother Nature has to offer. The seven mile ride into Roaring Brook at Baxter State Park (Mount Katahdin) in Maine was just long enough to listen to the whole Jam! I'll never forget growing up in the Seventies and how lucky we were in having some of the best music ever.

I did it Saturday night at a social club to which I am a member of. All these people OLDER than me were playing hip/hop, rap kinda of stuff, and were really being annoying, so I played Mtn. Jam, followed by Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull. I totally killed the vibe in the joint. Other patrons thanked me for playing those too songs which took over an HOUR to play!!

In 1974 I was thirteen and rode my bicycle about eight miles to a Woolco Department Store on a Canadian early spring day, and I bought the only vinyl copy of Eat A Peach they had. I knew they had one in stock, and had been saving up my money to buy it. It was quite a bike ride home carrying that LP in a paper bag on that blustery day. I knew absolutely nothing about life at that age, but I did know about great music, having been turned on to the ABB Fillmore East record by my older brother the year before. Being that young, I think perhaps it took a couple years for me to fully appreciate the the absolute brilliance of the entire Eat A Peach album, but since then I doubt I've gone a whole week without playing it. Words fail me in conveying how deeply this music touches my soul. It saddens me to realize today's kids will never know the thrill of saving up to buy a record, finding a way to the record store to buy it, carefully pulling it out of the sleeve and playing it on the turntable for the first time. To say nothing of the 'music' they listen to these days...

this jam is aptly titled : it is a Mountain Jam, as in a lot going with all the moving parts, and great solo's, a lot of people in my neck of the woods like to talk about the Grateful Dead in awed tones because of the ability to play live...frankly The Allman Brothers had it down and played with more verve and life and had more people who could solo and stretch than those guys all day!
@djroxanne44299 жыл бұрын
Dylan Higgins why do people like to compare? why cant people just like who they like? I'm not a dead fan , but why compare two bands that had their own cult following before ever making it big? theyre both great bands in their own right..and jammings been around since we invented instruments to play so come on dude chill and enjoy..
@dhigg367919 жыл бұрын
because it's a common observation among musicians in my area, especially people that like to jam
@djroxanne44299 жыл бұрын
Dylan Higgins but to say one is better than another only incites people, so I don't understand why people would want to do that. and you would have to be on here 1 minute to realize that..im so sick of the fighting especially over something that's subjective anyway..IMo.. which people forget to use IMO, cuz thats all it is, or are you the definitive word on jam bands?

Deej dawn-roxanne I like to compare the Grateful Dead to The Allman Brothers all the time. The Grateful Dead was the acid band and the Allman Brothers was the mushroom band. Both were great.
