Thank you Mark Coleman for reacting to "Not my cross to bare". It has taken 2 years for someone to react to this song. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I always have enjoyed the Allman Brothers Band! Thanks again! I am sure you will enjoy more of their songs. Whipping Post, Melissa, Soul shine, Adams song & many, many more of their music. He & his brother Duane had beautiful souls. Thank you again!

I have been very blessed to have seen them live, at my small college, in the springs of 1970 and 1971. IN 1971, I was (easily) recruited to go pick up Dwayne at his hotel shortly before the concert. He was kind, appreciative, and down to earth! Sadly, he had only months to live.

A few years ago there was a special concert to celebrate Gregg Allman. Tons of outstanding artists each played his most memorable songs, and as I listened to it, I realized that as good as those songs were, and as great as the artists were that were playing/singing their songs, it just wasn't the same without Gregg's soulful voice. Best blue-eyed blues singer I've ever heard.

anyone who loves blues guitar, or plays themselves, will tell you that the guitar work on this song doesn't get any better or more perfect! Enjoyed the reaction! I watch quite a few reaction videos. I'm 65 and am always surprised when I find out how many younger people have never heard music I grew up with. I am glad newer generations are listening and loving!

Their Album "Live at Filmore East" is considered by some, even Rolling Stone, as maybe the best live Album. ever. The instrumental "In memory of Elizabeth Reed" punches all the buttons.

It was really a shame with the death of Duane Allman. They were at their peak, Duane's slide work and his playing were being recognized by people like Eric Clapton. Everything about them were unique for the times. You had 2 drummers working together that gave them a solid rhythm, Greg Allman and his natural growl in his voice then having 2 legendary guitar players in Duane Allman and Dickie Betts that had their own sound and if you listened long enough you could pick out who is playing what I'm thankful they were able to put out The Allman Bros. Band Live at the Fillmore East so their Music was put down on tracks so their Music will play on and on.

The guitarists, Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, are considered titans of rock guitar. In fact, Duane is considered one of the top two or three guitarists of all time. He played on many other artist's albums that recorded at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama from around 1969 until his death in 1971......Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, etc, etc. He's also the guitarist that tears into the famous solo on Eric Clapton's song, Layla.

In an interview, Dicky Betts once said he was heavily influenced by essentially all of the great blues harp players, and harp player Thom Doucette later became a member of the Allman Brothers Band family AND sometimes live contributor so that was a spot on observation you made about the tone, texture, and sound frequently produced by both Duane & Dicky Betts' guitars. The Spencer Davis cut that opens the Allman's eponymous first album was recorded and meant to be played as an introduction to the band and a fitting lead-in to -- and meant to be played together with -- the masterfully performed and now legendary "It's Not My Cross To Bear." I enjoyed watching you "get it" as much as I always enjoy listening to it. As a side note, Duane Allman created this band as a vehicle for "real" music played by "real" musicians; a band he hoped would stand the test of time. The success of this band is that it certainly has stood that test and more. The tragedy? That Duane Allman & original lineup bass player Berry Oakley were taken from us WAY too soon. Had they lived, it's anybody's guess what body of work they potentially would have produced for one and all music lovers to be touched & moved by. What would have happened had Duane & Berry lived and found/developed a comparable "band" lyricist such as the Grateful Dead were blessed with in both Robert Hunter and additionally later on with John Perry Barlow? One can only imagine the impact a development such as that would have had on a later Allman Brothers Band repertoire. In my most wistful moments, i conservatively conclude that such a band would have conquered the world -- or at least that part of it that's worth having -- the music appreciating world. Then I snap out of it and embrace the fact that what they left behind for us will always stand on its own merits, and is probably more than any one of us probably deserves anyway. Loved your reaction! Keep 'em comin', Mark, & best wishes!!!

I would lock you in a room and force-feed you and everyone else who's never spent a week with nothing but the Allman's first album as their constant, 2-times-a-day listening schedule. There is a reason Album Rock became The Thing. And why Southern Rock started - and it's that first Allman Brothers album. I know these Reactions require single-song views, but listen to the whole album, over and over and over. Digest every nuance of it. AND study the band's make-up - two drummers was unheard of. TWO lead guitarists were unheard of. And NOT MY CROSS gives our ears the treat of two lead guitarists at the tops of their game. (I'd say WHIPPING POST gievs us that taste in separated solos - but NOT MY CROSS jams those solos together. WHIPPING POST also is why God invented two drummers-!) But DREAMS and every other track - IN ORDER - will create a wonderful event in American music-fans' lives, I believe. Then, after a week of that... go get LAYLA and spend a week with THAT.
@BuffaloC305
@BuffaloC305 5 жыл бұрын
(I'd also add that, in general, all live recordings before 1977 SUCK. That's because the audio-equipment - speakers, PA systems, MIXBOARDS SUCKED. Even cables were bad. AND expensive so that when anything failed, or started to fray, it was difficult and expensive to replace. And the concert venues were anti-acoustics - they were invariably ex-warehouses or ex-movie theaters that never needed volume control or acoustic mixings. Those were so expensive because the Good Equipment (1) didn't exist and (2) was rare when it was first coming out. Two good exceptions: ONE WAY OUT from the Fillmore, and Chicago's 1970 performance at Tanglewood. Maybe Quicksilver's Happy Trails live-segment, but that was so few instruments... one of the greatest things about Stevie Ray's Hendrix covers is that they do justice to that music because Jimi never had THAT quality of sound-reproduction equipment. Heck, if the Beatles' playing venues couldn't give THEM great sound, no one else had it either.

Ok I'll display my ignorance here. I always assumed that the intro guitar solo had to be Duane, cuz it was so good. But now I believe it's Dickie. Can someone confirm this?
@johnhoerl7326
@johnhoerl7326 5 жыл бұрын
In fact your initial assumption is correct. The intro solo is Duane, as is the first solo break in the middle of the song, while Dickey plays the second mid-song solo break. Duane has a slightly brighter, cutting tone and Dickey’s tone is a little warmer and fatter. Don’t sleep on Dickey! He stood toe to toe with Duane every night. Check out his epic solo on You Don’t Love Me from Fillmore East!
@filthyphillyboy
@filthyphillyboy 5 жыл бұрын
@@johnhoerl7326 Thanks for your explanation. In Duane's intro solo it sounds like he's deliberately using feedback, for emphasis, on one of the notes. Or, I could be wrong. Yes, I'm familiar with all Dickey's solos on YDLM off of Live at Filmore. I think in the one you're referring to he's damn near shredding--in 1971! Thanks for the info.
@johnhoerl7326
@johnhoerl7326 5 жыл бұрын
filthyphillyboy I agree about the feedback. Duane was a master at incorporating his guitar’s natural harmonic distortion into his solos. Interestingly, by the time of the Fillmore album Duane was using a 50 watt Marshall head and Dickey was using a 100 watt head. (I don’t know about this first album, though) As a result, Duane tended to distort earlier than Dickey at a given volume, giving that nastier edge to his tone. Both of them are amazing!
@filthyphillyboy
@filthyphillyboy 5 жыл бұрын
@@johnhoerl7326 Yeah I remember hearing that intro solo for the first time around 1972. Every note just quivering with that blues feel. And then the feedback note. Astonishing. Thanks for your perspective.
