I was 23 and in college at UC Riverside. I had just left class and was headed to the parking lot to go home, when I heard this amazing slide guitar coming from the quad. My friend Jimmy and I ran toward the sound and discovered the Allman Brothers Band playing Statesboro Blues. We and the rest of the small crowd were mesmerized, and I'm still in love with them 50 some years later. Thanks for keeping their music alive Harri.

The soul in Gregg Allman’s voice! He was only 23, 24 years old in 1971…

This is the one, Harri; my parents had the Live at Fillmore Album when it came out; I was very young and grew up listening to this song; Stormy Monday was my Father’s favorite track. He died too young in 2014; he played it just weeks before he passed. it hurts to play this song, but I do because it’s just so good, and I like to think that he is listening with me. Southern Rock Blues perfection. What a wonderful reaction; I can tell that you felt every note!!! ❤

A masterpiece from The Allmans. Great selection, Dave. Harri, the bass player was Berry Oakley, who died on the same stretch of road in an almost identical motorcycle smashup as Duane Allman the year before. Oakley got his heavy distinctive bass sound by adding a third pickup to his '68 Fender Jazz Bass. Also, as a former lead guitarist with his previous band, Oakley played the bass with a pick...unlike most bassists at the time. All of this added up to him being one of the most imitated bassists in rock. A lot of bass players tried to create their own version of his "Tractor Bass." Thanks Dave and Harri.

Back then in Los Angles Ca 1971, Friday and Sat. day night there was so many great concerts .... cost $3.50 at the door, you would go Friday night and if the band not your socks off, go back Saturday night. i"m 71 years something now......

I used to love to go to concerts, not anymore. Even ticket prices in the cheap seats are a luxury purchase now. Wife and I were on 6th street in Austin last weekend, heard some great local bands playing in no cover bars, that’s good enough for us, these people are talented. We can watch headliners on KZbin. We went to the Song Writers festival in Dripping Springs last Sunday, it was great to hear all the talent there. Didn’t even have to pay for parking. No reason to spend a fortune on the heavily marketed over priced artists tickets, there’s still great local talent around to support.

Damn right they tell stories about being there, it's one of the most famous live concerts in US rock history. Ushered in a unique genre, Southern Rock. Extraordinary performance and sound.
@KindCountsDeb37733 ай бұрын
the 60/70's was about experimentation, new music genre s, expanding music sounds and what a time in our society as well. A revolution of sound. Change, protest and peace. Southern rock really emerged, and the ABB were up front. My cousin Red Dog was their first Roadie and he introduced me to them at many concerts, other artists and the vibe. He wrote a book and others have as well> Gregg's autobiography is a good way to learn their history.

The first guitar solo was Duane Allman, the second one was Dickey Betts, they were unsurpassed magic together.

Yes! This is how we all felt the first time we heard this…and there are so many more jaw dropping moments throughout this album, which many would call the greatest live rock album, ever. Very astute of you to hear, and mention, Berry Oakley’s bass playing. He was the oft overlooked secret ingredient in this wonderful (and carefully crafted) recipe 👍
@julietate78069 ай бұрын
Duane Allman said the Allman Bros. had three guitarists: Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley and him. There will never be another live band that can touch them... and in my 63 years, I can say that with some authority.

The entire live album is ear candy, a masterpiece, certainly one of the greatest live albums ever recorded and produced. "Stormy Monday" was some of Duane and Dickey's most controlled, understated, yet emotional guitar work. Vocals and Hammond Organ by Gregg were also top notch. Berry Oakley was also such a great bassist, and while not as pronounced on this tune, the duel percussions employed by the ABB, resulted in such complexity and depth to their music. Touches of Jazz, Rock, the Blues, and even Gospel thrown into the "Stormy Monday" vibe. This is certainly one of the vinyl albums in my 50+ year old collection that I cherish the most. I recommend you listening to the wonderful tune "Fantasia Suite" or "Mediterranean Sundance" on the album, performed by three guitar maestros Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia, John McLaughlin, phenomenal tunes. Very different than the ABB, but variety being the spice of life, it is well worth a listen.

My favorite live recording is this song... and there is a LOT of great music out there. I know Harry is digging on Berry's bass playing, and that's cool but I would love to see Harry in 20 years when he realizes the Allmans get better with age and its ALL about the drumming. Many of their best recordings have an up-tempo shuffle break that just takes you on a magic carpet ride.

From "At Fillmore East", 1971, this tune was originally done by electric guitar pioneer T-Bone Walker in 1947, who inspired B.B.King to take up the electric guitar. On this Allman Brothers version, we find younger, stronger, raw vocals, that are wonderful and refreshing and the guitars so vibrant. Duane's guitar solo, so rich and soul grabbing with subtle changes in tone and attack, making worthy of being "So Dirty" as Harri would say. 😊 The organ, an absolute delightful delivery. The whole album is a masterpiece. Great and groovy reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Dave. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Harri, thanks for this. I have long history with the ABB. I heard that the drums and BASS were the driving force of a band, the under current. There is a term for that undercurrent, when it's really bubbling underneath, saying a band was "cookin' (cooking) and it's a good explanation of the sound. Be well and job well done Harri !

They certainly are great. One of my favorite blues bands of the era. I know the cover some other genres, but few bands can do blues as well as the Allman Brothers. I first saw them play live at the Boston Tea Party in May of 1969. They had only formed the band two or three months earlier and they were awesome. They were the opening act for The Velvet Underground. It was six months before they started recording their first album (although Duane had already done session work with some well known performers). It was also their first gig out of the south. A few weeks later they opened there for "Dr.John The Night Tripper" The following year they came back as the headline act for a two night appearance! The last time I saw them live was on the Boston Commons in August of 1971. One of their last concerts with Duane, Two months before he died. That was such a shock.

Hello Harri, Denny Laine, who was Paul McCartney;s main guitar player in the band Wings passed away yesterday Dec 5, 2023. Denny was an original member of Paul McCartney and Wings and was Paul's steady guitarist in the band even when other members quit. Denny always stuck with Paul. Denny was also a founding member of Moody Blues. I would like to suggest an old Moody Blues hit that Denny sang when he was with the group. -"Go Now" by the Moody Blues.

A reason I love your channel is that you often feature artists others either overlook, or of whom they are unaware. Isn't it time you looked at Joan Armatrading again, having only featured her once? I suggest the 1979 live video of Steppin' Out, a solo with amazing guitar virtuosity. Another to whom you've only reacted once is Arlo Guthrie. Why not try The City of New Orleans? Finally, a Caribbean-British diva you've so far overlooked is Cleo Laine. Please try He Was Beautiful.

Enjoyed your enthusiastic review for classic Aiimam Bros. Live, "Stormy Monday". They carried on after Duane's tragic death but Duane was the leader + heart and soul of the band. I saw them @ Watkins Glen in '73 and they were rocking but replaced 2nd guitar (Duane) w Chuck Leavell on keys/piano. They were very good but lacked the fire/ emotional feel that Duane delivers w his slide guitar. Hey their debut is one of best ever, to put your stamp on a new kind of music is incredible. Opening w "Don't Love You No More" into "Not My Cross to Bear" it's so unique it floors you on 1st listen. A fan ever since. My favorite deep cuts are "Revival" + "Please Come Home" both from underappreciated 2nd album Idlewild South. Peace

"The Fillmore, March 13, 1971, shows are considered to be the piece de resistance of Allman Brothers' live shows, and led to what many believe to be the best live album ever recorded, "At Fillmore East." The Allmans delivered a breathtaking performance, which started at 12AM and went for around 7 hours." My ticket stub for this concert ($5.50) is THE most coveted of all of the concert tickets that I have ever attended. I was in my second year of college, and the concert was held on a Sunday, as noted on my ticket. I had seen them one other time before this, and that was either late winter of 1969 or early spring of 1970 at Penn State University. They were already a spectacular groundbreaking band, especially live.
