Yeah people the more you become truly aware of the talented musicians past n present on this earth the more it becomes apparent picking “favorites” is a fools errand. Don’t pick favorites because the next sound you hear may shatter your present beliefs. May the steps a person takes on their journey through the halls of musical greatness wear the soles down while uplifting the soul.. God truly must love us to bestow this ability to create and enjoy music. Thank you God.

Those drumsticks you mentioned are called brushes. The Allman Brothers are a badass band. And if you listen to more of them, they will be a favorite of yours as well. Hey, ain't nothing wrong with having several favorite bands. These are rock bands but there are so many genres of rock it is hard to settle on just one or two. And you nailed the name. There is a Duane in the band, Duane Allman, who played guitar. Unfortunately he died in a motorcycle accident early in their career. Bassist Berry Oakley died almost a year to the day after Duane, in another motorcycle crash. Duane's brother Gregg Allman was the keyboard player and lead singer.

Thank you so much, Van!!! What a great way to start the day! For the NYC confusion 😂. I lived in the Bronx till I was 10 (1970’s) and Brooklyn till I was 20; identify with both, lol! Live right across the water in NJ now, can see the skyline. Grew up with my Dad playing this album; this song makes me feel like I went to Church and a bar all at the same time, lol!!! Was one of my Dad’s favorites; he was a Deacon at our church in the Bronx; all colors together; NYC years were the best time of my life. So glad you dug it, and thank you!! The Allman Brothers is just fantastic; “Dreams”, “Whipping Post”, goes on and on. This song hits the blues, R&B and Jazz buttons just right! Gonna smoke a cigarette now and enjoy this ❤️

In my opinion the greatest blues song ever recorded. And Duane Allman is the greatest guitar player of all time. He only lived to age 24. But what he did in that short amount of time is truly amazing. He was a session guitar player for top R&B acts like Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. He is the most versatile guitarist . Just listen to him play slide on Statesboro Blue and One Way Out and then hear him pick on Blue Sky. I agree with others. You should listen to Whipping Post (studio version) next if you have not already reacted to it.

Jaimoe and Butch Trucks are the two drummers, Gregg Allman on vocals and piano/organ. Duane Allman on guitar/slide, Dickie Betts on guitar. Berry Oakley on bass. I believe Thom Doucette played harmonica as he would join in with the band from time to time. Duane and Berry both died in separate motorcycle crashes early on. Probably the best guitar duo of all time with Dickie and Duane. Try out “Outskirts of Town”, “Not my Cross to Bear”, and “Whipping Post”. Also Duane put out a version of “Goin Down Slow” that has some of the best guitar work that I have ever heard. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your channel.

The six musicians that made up the OG line up were together less than three years, but the music they made in that short time they had together is "beyond words" and standing the test of time with ease and grace. Mostly a blues band at their roots. This tune is a good example - Bobby "Blue" Bland and T-Bone Walker were among their influences, along with of course Muddy Waters and others of that period. A significant influence for many southern bands was that 30s-60s blues music of the south; kind of an interesting background given the racial biases and segregation of the time. There is a documentary about the Muscle Shoals studios that discusses that a bit. While Skynyrd was more to the country side of the southern rock genre, they too had some pretty significant blues influences. These and other groups of that time introduced me, white suburbanite from the northeast to the joys of the roots of rock and roll - like Muddy said: "The Blues had a Baby and they named it rock n roll". My wife was fascinated when we watched "Cadillac Records" - I know of every musician in the movie and recognized most right away. If you want to hear some of the more rocking side of the ABB blues, it's hard to beat Blind Willie McTell's "Statesboro Blues" (also covered on this album) and their cover of "One Way out", recorded in this session and showing up on a later album. Can't go wrong there.

You were talking about "brushes" and there were 2 simultaneous drummers in The Allman Brothers Band who played at the same time w/2 FULL drum sets, a White one and a Black one, and they were so great together. They DO have a Duane ... the main lead/slide guitarist, but they DON'T have a Larry. Dickey Betts was the other lead guitarist. This song was a cover. In fact, it was covered by so many artists that it might be considered what they call a "traditional". Every Bluesman has to know this song to be considered legit. It was written by T-Bone Walker (first appeared in 1947), but the cover by The Allman Brothers Band was perhaps the most famous version ever done. They played the shit out of it !!! That's my story and I'm stickin' to it !!!

The Allman Brothers are my favorite band. Live at the Filmore east is by far their best album. Probably the best live recording ever. Stormy M9nday is my favorite song from that album! It takes me to church every time I hear it even after almost 50 years. I didnt hear it for the 1st time till around '76 or '77. lol

I think you had the same reaction to this song that I did when I was about 17. I always liked the blues but this song showed me what the blues is really like. I love this song and the whole album is killer!!

Allman Brothers are the best Blues band.Very Southern crafted...and boy did they learn their craft. They studied all the greats and heard the Black Gospel Church choirs singing on Sunday and much like Elvis appreciated this music growing up.Greg Allman studied to be a Dentist before falling into music. They have two drummers Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson.

The Allman brothers one of my all time favorites. Love for you to watch a video from their concert at Fillmore East 1971. This song is from that concert. The whole album is phenomenal. But you should watch them live doing MELISSA or WHIPPING POST. You will be forever changed.

Thanks for reminding me why I DID NOT have a "favourite band". But if I had to make up a top 5...nah, screw it, can't even do that. We were truly blessed in the late 60s and 70s with music.

Now that is the blues/southern rock! My first concert, 16 years old in Boston Mass. They are amazing. Zeppelin has always been my favorite band. Santana, Allman brothers and many more come after. Music brings me joy! We all sparked to this! it' a mesmerizing experience. You'll be sitting there for about 30 minutes after!

Loved watching you move your head listening to the guitar solos. I remember my friends wearing headphones and doing exactly the same thing when we listened to the same tracks 50 years ago. Enjoy the whole album -- and every other one by the Allmans (possibly my favorite band).

I was in ninth grade, and "Live at the Fillmore" was THE Bible for thousands of us young guitarists. Every note of every song is permanently impressed into my brain. Not just guitarists, either - if you put it on at a party a large percentage of people in my high school (22%? 30%?) could SING THE FUCKIN' GUITAR SOLOS! Like, nutty - No shit - straight up honest. I don't specifically remember the John F. Kennedy hit, I was like 5 years old, but I INDELIBLY and exactly remember the morning after Duane Allman died. It just seemed... _impossible._ I am SO glad this is coming up and around in the world again. You'll work your way through what we now can glim as an absolute Golden Age, so: I'm gonna go off the rails & take a sharp turn suggesting the next album. And that was - the ONLY music with enough WHAMMY to wean me off that Allman Bros tit - "BIRDS OF FIRE" by John McLaughlin's MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA. Absolutely another world changer, you might should put the ambulance number on your speed dial if you get bouncy thataways.... It's kinda got that heroin/oral sex vibe, even if you don't "like" it the first time it'll just KEEP COMING BACK AROUND, like a fuckin' ghost you can't shake - once you let it in the door it can't EVER leave. I could play Igno and say "well after all, it's just music it can't HURT you" - but I'd be lying, this shit could KILL weaklings. the Mahavishnu Orchestra's live album "Between Nothingness and Eternity" is maybe TOO hairy for now, but: now that you KNOW... heh heh heh....

Ahhhhhh, the early, to mid 70's and Southern Rock. Yep, The Allmans, Charlie Daniels Band, Marshall Tucker, The Outlaws, the cream of the crop. Though not Southern Rock, you'd also love Santana's first couple albums right up to the double live album, Moonflower, which it's an excellent live album right up there with Live at the Fillmore, the Song Remains the Same, and Frampton Comes Live.

The names of the TWO drummers are Derick Trucks and Jaimoe Johanson. The drum sticks you were curious about are called brushes- usually a stick with thin, stiff wires. This is a cover originally done by T Bone Walker...

Those sticks are called BRUSHES, they're strands of steel wire pulled into a handle for that softer sandy beat. And the Allman Brothers have always rocked TWO drummers. Mr.Johnnie "Jaimo" Johnson, and Mr. Butch Trucks.
