The (Almost) Resurrection of Rebecca "Newt" Jordan

For a good portion of the audience who watched Dr Clemens tell an emotionally crippled Ellen Ripley that Newt had drown in her cryotube, this was an affront to everything that James Cameron had done with Aliens. And despite those early comics seeing an eventual republish with the original names restored, as well as a possible revival in Neil Blomkamp’s aborted Alien 5 and a thankfully deleted cameo at the end of The Predator, Rebecca "Newt" Jordan has remained firmly on the other side of that “veil of tears” when it comes to the big screen.But there was a time in the mid-1990s when Newt’s untimely demise was about to be undone. I would wager that most Alien fans are unaware of this footnote in the development of Alien Resurrection where we would have seen a cloned Newt, rather than Ripley, resurrected to combat our favorite acid-blooded extraterrestrial Xenomorph XX121.
I think it’d be a safe bet, not just because the film’s lack of popularity within the fandom leading to less exploration of it, but because until relatively recently there was just so little known about this direction that Alien Resurrection could have taken.

Dang, those Dark Horse comics in their original form…it’s almost as if people grew to care about Newt and Hicks during the course of Aliens and wanted to see more of them! 😑

I LOVE Alien Resurrection, but I'm a big Joss Whedon fan, so it's no surprise that it resonates with me so much. His signature dialogue and quirky character dynamics, and storytelling really shines through imo, even in a film that has such a unique tone within the Alien franchise. Good video! You shared a lot that I didn't know. Very interesting.

Book 2 was the first Aliens comic I ever read in the Aliens magazine. I think Book 2 might be one of the best comics I've ever read.

Newt had such potential to be a great main character and even new lead for the Alien saga. I love how she had many alternate fates in expanded universe (and unused Alien 3 scripts, they were done so much more tastefully than the actual film) and the Alien 4 script seems like one of the earliest attempts at a legacy sequel before it went cool (with Gladiator 2 coming out recently, where the kid in the first film is made into the main hero), yet seems like every opportunity to have Newt in live action was missed. I'd love to see Blomkamp's Aliens legacy sequel taking a Gladiator 2 approach where ideally, Ripley, Hicks and Newt started a family and Newt could be the person who Ripley after a lifetime of battling xenomorphs eventually passes the torch to.

I still need to see those Newt and Ripley endings from The Predator, it's such a shame they never released alternate cuts including those scenes as well as other deleted scenes! I'm also really interested in the AVP3 pitch that Brianna Watkins was talking about, and I genuinely hope they revisit it and bring it to the big screen eventually! Well, at least give us AVP3, as I've been waiting for a third film ever since falling in love with the first two AVP and AVPR movies!

I'm surprised they were thinking of such long-in-the-tooth candidates for play Newt. I would have thought going with a teenage actor would be a more obvious choice. Why would you be thinking to triple Newt's age? Instead Larisa Oleynik or Kirsten Dunst would seem a good casting choice at the time.

- The Marvel Collections, the 1st one has the stories with Ripley, Hicks & Newt (Earth War?) and as far as I know it's the unchanged version! Can someone confirm? Personaly I still don't have those, but that will change, rather sooner than later, I guess. - Make a real sequel-movie to "Aliens", ignore what takes place after, use the original characters & if possible their actors, make good use of "young again" tech like shown in that "ST: Regeneration" short-movie where Cpt. Kirk is alive & visits Old Spock before he dies. Push the story & worldbuilding further, the franchise demands it. Use the old comics for inspiration, leave the studio-ego behind. - THE PREDATOR does not exist! 😅

Killing Newt and Hicks showed that in this universe there is no happily ever after it’s not sunshine and rainbows the best you will get is that Weyland Yutani doesn’t get their hands on the Xenomorph

It was a poor creative decision from a writer who didn't know what to do with the characters and so chose to kill them off-screen. There's not much more meaning to it than that, even if you enjoy Alien 3.
