This demo is a master piece.

Kinda... sad, that we're here watching a video that's dozens of megabytes in size, decoding it with multi-core 64-bit CPUs running at GHz, and dedicated hardware on the video card, just to play it back. Meanwhile it was generated from nothing in 64K with an 8-bit CPU that can't even quite make 1MHz.

I’m watching on an iPhone, that’s burning around 6 watts… whereas the C64 consumed 10-20 watts generating this, and displaying it on a CRT consuming anywhere between 50-150 watts. So I guess that’s more efficient. 😂

Seems that platform’s limitations (and fixed properties) actually spark the creativity - not choke it. They can also lead to better code - one is forced to think more deeply about the task. Thanks for sharing this marvelous demo

At the C64 heyday it wasn't limited. It was one of the most capable machines for an average user.

​@@mattx5499 when it was new and capable the software for it was terrible and the quality increased each year, when the computer was more and more limited compared to other platforms. History repeats itself. Many times quick and dirty hacks win and the stuff we work for for years with no limits tends to fail. The C64 itself is a good example. And Intel 8086/88, that were made as a stopgap product while they finished up the good cpu. Which sucked and failed. And what about JavaScript, made in 10 days. Constraints, be it time or resources, have shown time and time again to make better products. Engineers and artists are not good with no limits.

Had this been created in the 1980s then my younger self would've been utterly blown away. Would this even have been possible back then without modern hardware to assist in the tool / asset / artwork creation, not to mention the decades of demo coding challenges that inspired this.
