ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Mention Avery Fisher, or The Fisher Radio Corporation, to a vintage audio collector or restorer, and they will almost always associate this name with some of the most legendary audio products ever made. Avery Fisher, the founder and long time president, was driven to innovate so many aspects of the hi fidelity market over the years, that a list of firsts is almost beyond comprehension. He was truly a pioneer in separating and developing individual audio components, like tuners, amplifiers and speakers, making them the best in the industry. Prior to his new approach, components were unified into consoles, the flagship products of the hi fidelity market for years. He was also the first to produce an all transistor stereo receiver, the Tune-O-Matic.
But there is so much more to Avery Fisher's life. Besides producing the Rolls Royce of audio products, at super premium prices, he also started a business, AR Products, to source aftermarket accessories for foreign automobiles, then relatively scarce in America. It was a success. But his greatest passion was design, particularly of book covers. So great was his reputation that long after he was rich and successful, he was sought out by Winston Churchill's publisher to design the cover for Churchill's great work, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, published in 1956. Being a generous philanthropist, he donated his fees for this, and other design works, to charity. He also went on to endow the Lincoln Center's music hall, seeing it renamed Avery Fisher Music Hall. Years later, his family was compensated when the Hall was renamed, Geffin Concery Hall.
