After watching a ton of his videos and living local and dealing with this man for several years. I have to finally speak my mind. He is as down to earth in person as he is in his videos. This is for the people watching that don't have that ability, to walk into his shop. It's an amazing place. I love it. Hands down to me, old school vibe, no pressure environment. First time I met him, I walk in 5 minutes to close, and I'm like hey, I've got $500.00 and I want to get back into home audio old school, sold all my stuff years ago can you help me. He was like, I got you. Took the time to play this and that receiver and this and that speaker. Stayed late and even helped me carry them to my car. This was low budget entry level. Still old school solid state gear but, entry level. Got home and was in heaven!!! Friends came over and were like wow. Great sound etc. blah blah blah. I've upgraded since then got the bug like we do and tried several different things. Swapping this and that etc. He is spot on when he says, it's up to your ears, room, budget. Period. I've taking gear into him, and he was like, I don't wanna touch it. It's not worth it. Save your money, he said. Mind blown, the honesty from Kevin. He totally could have taken my money and done God knows what with it. Who does this!!? This day and age, we need more people like this in the world. Just saying.

This is a very subjective hobby, so the best system is the one that sounds best to you. Enjoyment of the music is the most important part. If that's from a transistor radio to the most expensive system, it doesn't matter as long as it makes you smile.

It should be called the Ugly Truth about sound snobs. I was an audiophile for many years and bought and sold equipment to support the habit. Then about ten years ago I caught myself listening to the equipment. It broke my heart. My stereo as a teenager was lo,lo fi. At the other end of that I have a friend with a system with names like Martin Logan, Macintosh, Linn ect...After sitting and listening to his system I came home and listen to mine and I like mine better. One of his amps is worth more than any system I can put together. I'm the guy who collects entry level amps from the 70s. Last night I put on a UK pressing of I Robot. Heaven, truely heaven. Rotel 833 with a Audio Technica cart (75 bucks maybe). AR cables. Toshiba SB 300 w 17wpc into a set of Large Advent (76-77 A3s, my favorite speakers) Pure heaven boys n girls.

You're being a reverse snob. "Expensive is bad. Audiofilin' is elitist!" So, you like yours better... great. Is that proof of something? Certainly not that your friend or anyone else is a "snob." You like your sound, they like theirs. I happen to love the midbassy sound of speakers like your Advents, and old ARs. But some people like "neutral." Others love super prominent treble. Whatever. Doesn't make them snobs, and you're being snobbish yourself, here.

Its about luck of the draw....vintage equipment is beyond the dollar amount .... What you find is what you get....my ONKYO 501 was in a trunk of an old car....gave the kid 20 buck. Sounds great....had no choice when selecting equipment....so I have Technics ONKYO PIONEER and Sony all mixed together....SOUNDS AWESOME....400.00 bucks worth of stuff people want to throw away...its more fun to be "assigned" with gear and then making it work together. ..hard to explain..if I had alot of cash Id go insane trying to select gear....

I really can't understand how hearing someone expressing a different opinion about audio equipment than one's own would incite hatred. Some people really need to get a life. Nobody "knows" shit. We are all just expressing what we believe. That is why we engage in conversations, to compare why we differ. One (or both) of us is probably wrong. I wouldn't be worried about people flaming at you. I don't waste my time talking to people who "know" things because the "know" people who "know" things. Life is too short.

There is very little point to arguing aesthetics - and the hi-fi hobby is mainly (if not totally) about aesthetics. What looks good? What sounds good? What works best together? As long as your system sounds good to YOU, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

I appreciate the “Mom’s spaghetti” analogy! I am relatively new to vintage hifi, but trained and worked in recording studios. So many people are willingly ignorant of their own biases when it comes to listening. I am guilty of leaning towards a “warmer” sounding mix in the studio, and when mixing songs I like a system that is similar to the end-user listening experience I hope to achieve. I remember working hard on my setup and being excited to show one of my contemporaries, who immediately started to badmouth it because it employed active speakers “which can’t possibly be good.” I actually respected his work, but later learned he uses a system with the high-end particularly cranked. So we ended up with similar results but by completely different means.

Being a hobbyist in this since the mid to late 70's as a kid, please continue with these topics to enlighten everyone that nobody seems to want to talk about. Call it inside info or whatever. From snake oil products, audio snobbery and other bad tactics, I have seen them all. Just let it be said from your prospective as a repair shop or seller and also from a collector's point of view. I could share a few points.

Such an interesting topic, the constant drive for 'better' exists everywhere - audio, golf, photography, fly fishing, gaming, cars etc. You're right, there's 1000s of variables but it comes down to one thing, does it sound good to you? BTW, your videos are quite good, entertaining, fun to watch and are short. Your audio passion comes through giving you authenticity. Thanks for the Monday morning video.

Well said. I'm 60 now, and have been enjoying this hobby for about 30 years now. I've bought top line gear from each maker at low prices that would make your head spin; let's just say at 25% of what it goes for now or less. I have seen the good and bad of the enthusiasts out there. There are a few experts that everyone should bow down to, even if it's gonna hurt your pride a bit. In general, they will help you, but they may relish the opportunity to show what they know to the community at the same time. You just have to take the chest puffing for what it is, much like you'd respect your doctor's knowledge. Then there are people who are just plain fools. And I'll admit, if I went back and read a few of my posts over the years, I might put myself in that category at times. Most of it though, was my perception of a personal attack by someone else in the community towards me. I just got defensive and... well, became that fool I speak of. I have matured a lot, I hope. The one thing that I have found paramount in the hobby is this; treat others with respect. Not everyone has your technical knowledge or abilities. Don't be a jerk, be an asset. Help others if you can. What does it hurt of offer up that spare pre-amp board out of a unit of yours that has long lost it's way to be a parts machine? Be especially nice to those Millennials that we older people think are ruining the world. They hold their own given the right guidance, and once they catch on, you'd better get out of their way. They WILL out-do you. They are smart, resourceful, and eager. And if they become your protege, they'll even help you carry that heavy console unit upstairs. I know from personal experience. Bottom line? Just be nice in all things concerning humanity. Respect differing opinions. Shape the world in a positive way. Lastly, laugh a little more!

I love this hobby. I've experienced this pursuit for over 50 years. I haven't always been satisfied with what I own, but it informs me on what my next purchase might be. I never want to bother with cable comparisons. If other people can tell the difference between them, that's great, I can't unless it's cheaply made junk. I've heard some very expensive equipment, and sometimes I think this gear must be attractive because of the badge and the cost. I'm not suggesting that all expensive equipment is overpriced or overrated, I'm just saying you can't judge how good it will sound based on price or nameplate. I enjoy watching your videos. You seem to be a straight forward knowledgeable person. Best to you.

I really enjoy your posts! I have been an audio enthusiast since the late sixties. I still have my Sansui 9090DB which I purchased back in the mid seventies (paid $450 - sale price, original MSRP $999). Completely refurbished and re-lamped. During the past couple of years I purchased the following: Marantz 8006 intergrated receiver, Marantz CD6004, Tascam 202SK VII, Thorens TD 206. I have all my audio library (LPs Cassettes CDs). I wished I lived closer to your shop (SoCal LA native) because I would definitely take my 9090DB to service some of scratchy post knobes. Keep up the good work!

Kevin I enjoy watching your videos for many reasons but the easiest ones are, No stupid intro music or video short, Sick of that. 2nd, you just say whats on your mind, Bammmm! Done. No fluff. Thanks for that. You mentioned in the Integrated Amplifier video how ( All Roads Lead to McIntosh) and that stuck in my head. Of course I've always drooled over them but figured it wasn't going to happen. For a while now (7years) I've owned a Marantz 2250B and loved it. Every time I listen to it I always think that it's just short of what I'm looking for. Well buddy, Thanks to your channel I decided to take the chance and find out. Saturday I took delivery of my first McIntosh MA 6100. I've spent the weekend going back and forth with an A/B panel I made, actually it's a ABCD panel but I'm only using two. WOW!!!! This is what I've been looking for!! So smooth and proud with the tightest bass, and the voices are just on another level. The cleanest amplifier I've ever heard. Thanks so much because if I wouldn't have found your channel I don't know how long it would have taken me to get here. I mention all of this because of what you said in this video about the ability to A/B different amplifiers and speakers. I've been doing that for years trying to find what I'm looking for. Thanks Skylabs.

I'm way late on this post, but your comments on FB are why I left the platform over 10 years ago. I found a few groups I liked and posted some of my "vintage" photos from my early days attending car races. I found one person taking the photos and posting them on sites outside of FB with no credit to me. I called him on it and he reacted as you would expect an idiot who doesn't care would act. That was enough to cause me to drop the account. That and the realization that FB doesn't care either about infringement. So I applaud your comments and look for more of your wisdom on why I spent a couple hundred dollars to fix my 50 year old Pioneer receiver just to have a decent radio and play CD's. The Technics turntable, Dynaco speakers and my vinyl went to my son long ago so he could create digital files for his iphone. And life goes on!

At this point, I am pretty set in what I like .. idler TTs through tube amps and BBC style speakers using Belden or whatever industrial cabling ... but my local audio shop helped me experience many different types of gear and setting techniques (not to mention some exotic music that I would not have listened to otherwise), which led me away from being too enticed by the hype machine (although I still do get caught sometimes...) and general audio-FUD. I will assume that your sincerity is helping other hobbyists gain similar experiences and insight. I enjoy your videos and appreciate what you do. Hope to be able to visit one day.

Really is great you sell in person only and not online for all the reasons you stated. I have loved audio all my life and good gear is good gear, regardless of the brand. Audio can be mostly subjective and suggestive. I wish people would not be so fanatical online about (their) audio opinions. Got tired of the nonsense of it all and don't visit forums anymore as well as I quit Facebook altogether and social media for over two years now. People defend what they own. And you're spot on about them not wanting to admit they made a bad purchase. This is human nature. One of my other hobbies is woodworking, and I watch a lot of woodworking videos. I sometimes run across videos comparing and rating various tool brands. Everyone has an opinion and experience, and wants to hear the results of the test, but secretly they're just hoping that the brand they own doesn't come in last place in the test and thinking they should have bought the Dewalt instead of the Makita. It's the same in hifi, if we're honest..."my Pioneer blows away your Sanui...because that's the one I own". And maybe there are objective measurements that put one above the other for certain things, but mostly it's about affirmation of our preferences and decisions. Listen to what you want, how you want. Enjoy the music.

My system probably isn't even worth £100. I have a fair number of old units (60's, 70's, 80's) and I swap things around fairly regularly but a lot of hi-fi types would most likely laugh at the gear I use. I don't care. When you're paying £20-£40 for an amp, there's no such thing as a bad purchase really as long as it either works or is repairable without cleaning yourself out. I have the advantage of being able to do the vast majority of repairs myself and parts are usually reasonably priced or often just downright cheap! I love tinkering with this stuff almost as much as I love blowing someone's mind with a pair of 55 year old speakers and then telling them I paid £10 for them... As for what some joker online thinks of my system, I simply don't care. Anyway, what I decide to do with my money and time is no one else's business.

As a former audio sales guy from 72 to 79 - and now at the age of 71 my thoughts 1- there’s a reason there are no college courses on CONSUMER audio gear 2- the stereo hobby as far as sound quality is mostly subjective by far 3- people follow trends in audio like crazy 4- audio sales people and manufacturers create very subjective hype and that’s all it is ( I did it myself ) 5- actual equipment comparison is extremely hard to accomplish with only one variable changed 6- don’t forget to enjoy the music and stop obsessing about equipment- at least after you had enough of looking for better upgrading 7- Never get tired of Cat Stevens albums

Audio: The "Food" Analogy is spot on. I always used the "Car" analogy..."That '71 Riviera is SO cool..." "you KIddin Me? That thing looks like Sh*t!" Eye, Taste, and Ear of the Beholder. I donot get involved in FB-groups as , like you said, there is too much aggression. Hi I just listened to your chat with Randall, loved it. Did as he suggested and here I am subscribed, and happy I did so. I totally agree with this video of yours. There is far too much negativity and one-upmanship on line. So much so that I no longer watch any of it. I must say that here in the UK it is not quite so combative. The only thing I'm interested in is QUALITY information laid out in front of me so that I can make my own judgement about how to use that information. Simple really. I love your common sense approach to life, that in itself is very refreshing. Keep it up you are definitely on the right track. I shall look forward to your next video whenever you decide to post it.

Thankyou for raising this very interesting topic. Learning about hi fi audio is a good way for anyone to learn about the subjective nature of sound and music reproduction and, in so doing, learn something interesting about our individual nature. It can help us to appreciate what it is we instinctively like and enjoy and perhaps understand better why we like certain things more than others. This introspective insight into what makes us who we are, as opposed to someone else, or what we might share in common with certain others, can be enlightening and valuable in getting to know ourselves and others better and help us in gaining more fulfilling experiences on our life's journey.

I have a saying about the differences between individual people that I wish others would accept as "truth". When it comes to tastes in food and drink, music, whom you're attracted to, vehicles, etc..."how do I know the color blue for you is the same color blue for me?" The point with that is why I like something is most likely going to come from experiences and perspectives that are completely different than someone else. So, why argue about it (especially in an online environment)? Life's too short for stuff like that. FYI, I have had a couple pieces repaired/refurbished by your store a couple years ago and I have two comments. One, the work was outstanding and both pieces are used near daily today trouble free and sound wonderful. And two, visiting your store was an outstanding experience and well worth the 250 mile round trip. I only wish that you were closer by so I could visit more often. Keep up the outstanding work, and I look forward to visiting next time I'm in the Des Moines area.

Music only exists in your head. Every instrument. Every voice. Every audio system only makes air vibrate. It’s not music. It’s just air moving. It’s not music until your individual ears, inside and out translates it from vibrations to neuro transmissions to your brain. At that point your brain interprets it into the music you hear. no matter if it’s CDs, LPs, amps, DACS, speakers or even cables if it sounds better to you in your head than it sounds better. Period. Every person hears and interprets it differently. There is no arguing with someone on what they hear and like. Not even measurements can tell you what someone hears And likes.

There’s division and hate in every subject not just audio and that is because we have freedom of speech and we neglect to exercise good manner, common sense and respect . I try to remind my self every day, because when passionate about a subject I can become a monster lol. I do not participate on Facebook public discussions with people I do not know and as a general rule unless I have something good to say I don’t say anything at all. And I admit this has been years in the making to not be that person 🤣🤣🤣 Now moving on to you, your channel and content, I cannot believe you’d have any negative comments! Your content is always informative, interesting and pleasant to watch! You’re knowledgeable and successful enough to own a hi fi / vintage audio business so I respect and appreciate All you have to say. If there’s ever something within the information you share with us that I feel different about or disagree, I might throw a question at you, but Definitely never an insult LOL. Even though it pains me I do understand why you do not do equipment shipping! I do understand shipping damage and packaging appropriately can easily eat away on your profit. So one day when my crazy busy lifestyle allows me I will travel and visit your store in person! Rest assured that your channel and your information is very well liked, there will always be ugliness but please remember It’s not about you and what you say, it’s about them been miserable folk! A great post. Entirely true and its relevance goes way beyond audio. Otherwise decent people who would probably be a delight to meet in real life can become absolute assholes on line. It's a forum which encourages our worst impulses to come out and play. Part of the problem is that people become desensitizes to the incivility and aggression online and it bleeds into their real world behaviour eventually.

this is the same as people's taste in music or who's the best guitarist etc... . To each his own. I come to your channel because of the practical nature of your advice and your passion for what you and your mates do. I'm looking at a Kreisler Radiogram with a Garrard turntable from the 1960's. As a piece of furniture it's classic looking. This is the sort of stereo my parents had when WE kids started to play music too loud, according to them. Understandably Hendrix, The Stones, Slade, Led Zeppelin weren't their taste in music compared to Louis & Ella, Stephane Grappelli, Cleo Laine, Peggy Lee, Nat et al, but music is the universal language for cool. Thanks for being real cool.

Exactly what I think. We develop a taste in many things when we are young and we have differently developed senses and that comes down to vastly different experiences. But because we agree on basic stuff, many ppl who don't self reflect think, that all our experiences are the same and then they absolutely don't understand why somebody else comes to a different conclusion in appearantly 'the same thing'. And then they bring it down to 'either you are right' or 'I am right', because they can't think that both are right, because of different viewpoints. And then they get defensive, because they feel challenged and if their social standing in the peer group (aka forum, facebook group or whatever) is at risk, they start to get toxic. Thats not a new phenomena, it just happens more easily online, because things get more easily toxic in a medium where social mechanisms don't apply. Means, if you get toxic in the shop, you got ot leave at best. At worst you'll catch a flying fist with your face. Online this can't happen. So some keyboard warriors get way more toxic here, than in real life. Not that I advocate for violence, but the chance of violence evens out some toxicity in real life, for sure. At least among men. And btw. that happens in many hobbies, where ppl invest a lot of time and social reputation (read: money spent) and social standing in a peer group (read: being an acknowleged expert) are at risk. Then it doesn't really matter, whether you talk about cars, wine, audio or stamp collecting ... things can get out of hand real fast. Unfortunately. And the solution is so easy, instead of trying to discuss others into your opinion, which doesn't work anyway, find ppl who have similar experiences with stuff you know and follow them, because most likely their impressions will be most helpful for you. I did that with wine, I now do it with audio. Helps me way more than discussing, whether wine should be oaked, or cables should cost XY. Quite a rant ... time for some music. Unfortunately the wine has to wait until later ... ;P

Whenever these discussions come up I always think about the number of variables involved. Once you start adding them up and consider the number of combinations possible, it seems pretty clear subjectivity is here to stay. I mean your own system can sound different to you from one day to the next, so that should tell people something about how contingent listening to something really is. Anyway, keep up the good work.

Couldn't agree more. I've been a member of various audio groups, attended their festivals and pretty much gotten along with the members face to face, but when the debates rage online, I'm outta there. Can't believe how fanatical they all become. Really. I'll admit, I'm a skeptic when it comes to a lot of Hi-End myths. But, I don't categorically rule them out. Just hard to believe some things that run counter to logic and experience. Also, in the last few years I've drifted away from these sites, mostly because there are some people who are detestable, or there to show you HOW MUCH THEY KNOW AND YOU DO NOT, lol. Whatever floats your boat Dudes! And, some sites lapse into POLITICS, that's the WORST, when the good 'ol boys roll out their righteous sanctimony and everyone else is, you know, lol. So to be honest, I haven't frequented those forums for years. And that's sad. Because there is a lot of knowledge there. But at what cost? Audio EGO, POLITiCAL EGO, competitive EGO. Give it a break. You all know that face to face no one would put up with that, right? So, it's nice to see someone who is more reserved and humble. That's refreshing!

Makes me sort of glad to be too poor to care about that crap. Long before I ever consider a $750 cable I'll be spending that on truck tires or paying off last year's vacation. Instead of wanting some ultimate piece of gear I'm happy being amazed how nice of a sound can be bought these days for a few hundred bucks total. Sure, I'd like (and will buy) some nicer equipment along the way, but as long as I'm paying more attention to the music than the system, I think I'm in a good space.

IMO a perfect system is unachievable, being that sound will always be subjective. I truly see no need to chase a perfect system, as my meager system works extremely well for me. When I got back into this hobby some years ago I was really taken aback with all the different camps, the "hatred" and the condemning personal characterization of people if you didn't agree on certain things. I don't think people who are into audio are anymore crazy than those who are into cars, movies, stamps, or whatever but it has sort of become viewed as a weird hobby much because people within the hobby treat each other so badly. It is just audio, we are not solving anything important. Just have fun. If you get into the "right" communities where obvious things like having good manners, an genuine interest in the hobby and most of all fun I think it can be a nice rewarding hobby. Nothing wrong with a good debate, but all too often it becomes just cesspit - especially online (of course, where else do people behave that badly?).
