This film would be at the very bottom of the list for me, it’s one of the worst blockbusters in recent years. The script is abysmal, the structure of the story is completely broken, every character is hilariously underwritten with hollow motivations, it’s completely tone-deaf and all over the place, the music is honestly embarrassing, its far too long, it’s insultingly pandering with its references to famous comic stories for cheap points, it’s cynical and cocky with how it tries to ape the MCU by hastily building up a universe and it doesn’t give the audience any credit whatsoever. Say what you want about the Raimi films but at least they’re tonally consistent with their corniness and wonderful style of direction and presentation, they’re packed full of life and energy even though they’re dumb as hell. Love the show though, my favourite podcast at the moment! Can’t wait for it every week.

Jonathan Juan you are right. the "style" of a movie is not a value judgment of quality. its a classiciation of genre really. for conversation purposes we can classify Raimi style as "campy" or "melodrama" ie extravagant, theatrical piece with exaggerated characters. like the Schumacher Batman forever/batman and robin movies. They are of the same style, aesthetic, genre, what have you. But when we speak of quality. good vs bad. Batman and robin would be an example of a poor execution, while Spiderman-2 considered excellent most would agree.

If you're gonna nitpick one without any forgiveness for the time it was made in do the same for TASM, but if you can be forgiving to TASM why not to the Raimi trilogy.

Say what you will about the Raimi films, but the TASM series just weren’t good films. The pacing was horrendous, too many plot lines introduced for no reason, and to top it off they weren’t even well payed off. The Raimi films may of been campy and down right silly at times, but at least they knew what they were, simple superhero movies. Spider-Man 2 is faaaaaaaaar superior to any of the TASM films. I love how they’re completely nitpicking the Raimi movies, being unforgiving of every detail, but then they’re super forgiving of everything in TASM 1&2. This series of reviews is depressing. The more bland the film the higher they rate it. The Rami movies are pure CINEMA. They have dynamic camera work, great music and sound, memorable action sequences and interesting production design and they value none of it. They said Homecoming is WAY better than any of these. That movie is fine, but it's not very memorable and has no real interesting point of view or style. I know that these guys are not the only ones who feel this way. It's really depressing. THANK YOU I’m glad someone said it. Raimi’s direction is so much stronger than any of the other movies, even homecoming. It pulls you in, even when the character writing isn’t the strongest. And I do think it’s pretty weak at times. But even rewatching Spider-Man 3, the filmmaking skill that’s on display makes it way more pleasing to watch than even Homecoming. Homecoming is great but it still has a slightly generic feel to it, for me. So glad someone else appreciates Raimi’s filmmaking!

This movie always comes to mind when someone discusses the worst movies I've watched. The Electro "they hate me, they lied to me" theme song was what made me finally check out of the movie. Harry was so terrible and the dialogue was even worse. Character motivations and personalities were all over the place. The CGI looked like CGI during the fights. I didn't even enjoy the Electro power plant scene. The only reason this movie isn't a 5% on RT is because it has decades of Spider-Man stories to pull from and does with just enough competency to have a slightly coherent plot in the background and Garfield and Stone were actually dating at the time. Their chemistry was off the charts, but how is that enough to forgive almost all of the rest of the movie? It's not. Worse than SM3 by a long shot and it's my least favorite. They turned this into a bad live action cartoon. All of the zany musical numbers and song choices are just the extra rotten cherry on top. When you wonder how bad it was, just remember that Sony finally caved and let Marvel have at it with their IP they've owned for over a decade. It would've died otherwise.

So I watched it now... and I'm #TeamGreg&Andy. Seriously, there needs to be some kind of veto vote installed at some point that should prevent such votes from the beginning ^^ One thing also didn't click with me during the debate... That supergroup theme for Electro by Pharell Williams, Hans Zimmer, Johnny Marr and Mike Einziger was an interesting approach to emphasize the inner emotions of Electro and I kinda liked it very much. That being said... my list would be.... Spider-Man 2 Spider-Man The Amazing Spider-Man Spider-Man 3 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Last week during my flu of death I basically binge-watched in two days SM3, The Jack Ryan series, TASM and TASM2. Overall, I probably liked Jack Ryan the most... The thing that dragged most about TASM that it has basically the same problems as Spider-Man 3. Too many villains, too many side-stories. And too much set-up. If you watch any of the behind the scene stuff, you can see how much they already have wanted to tease for the third movie. Doc Ock, Scorpio, Rhino, Green Goblin I, Vulture... they hinted at the return of Norman Osborne who had his head frozen after his death, maybe Felicity Jones becoming Black Cat, Shailene Woodley as MJ (when she was still doing the Divergent movies in parallel and wasn't sure to commit to two major franchises at the same time), The Stacys (i.e. Gwen & Daddy) returning (maybe as clones)... The Amazing Spider-Man 3 would have been a 5 hour movie with all the shit happening... or it would have been spreading out in all directions as Spin-off movies... just like Sony does it right now. It's also strange to see Sony's fixation with the Sinister Six. They were trying to push them in TASM2 and probably 3, they were making them... spoilers... a thing in Spider-Man for the PS4 and Far From Home looks like they are also introducing a reduced version of the Sinister Six with Vulture, Mysterio, Scorpio... and whoever they find on their trip to Europe. I'm seriously wondering what Venom will be next week... It may be Sony's return to worse times... or it could be start of their new Non-Spider-Man Spider-Verse... Anyways, I'll still support KF and I even upped my Patreon to the Fan Mail tier... I wanna get some of this Shirtless Spider-Man thingies :-)

This movie always comes to mind when someone discusses the worst movies we've watched. The Electro "they hate me, they lied to me" theme song was what made me finally check out of the movie. Harry was so terrible and the dialogue was worse.

Bare with me, this is long, but It's literally the review I wrote when this movie first came out. I think it holds up. I think I pretty much nailed it. "The problems with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 began with The Amazing Spider-Man 1. I'll skip over the problems with that movie that don't immediatly impact TASM2, but first I'm gonna go into where this all went wrong because of the first movie. -------------- OSCORP Okay. First off, this series kicked off with a fundamental stupid concept - Oscorp is to blame for EVERYTHING. Let's dive into that for a bit. They've instantly painted themselves into a stupid little corner that makes no sense. Oscorp has become nothing but a supervillain factory. They've devalued EVERY villain Spider-Man has by robbing them of their backstory and going "Oscorp did it". Also, what the hell type of excuse is there for this nonsense? People are going to look at Oscorp and go "yea, that place is a supervillain factory. It should probably be shut down." This place requires actual scientists to work on projects and invent stuff that serves no apparent purpose beyond supervillainy. It's one thing to go "lolwoops, accidentally got turned into a Lizard" once, and maybe "we were building this glider/armor thing for the military and it was stolen by a crazy person", but when it's EVERYTHING the company does....there are scientists and staff who are going to go "Heeeey...I designed that for Oscorp..." when they see it rampaging on the news. And scientists who are going to go "And WHY exactly do you want me to build a winged flying suit that steals peoples' life force? That sounds supervillainous..." "WHY do you want me to build a huge ridiculous and impractical Rhino shaped power armor/mech?" It's not like Norman Osborn is building and developing all this stuff personally. Beyond the fact that people are going to notice that shit, they've removed the relevance of Empire State University from Spider-Man's universe, despite that Peter just graduated, and that's where he should be headed after TASM2....right? But no, he never took a class field trip there and got his spider powers there. And no, Doctor Connors isn't a professor there. It eliminates Peter's association with all his various ESU classmates and associates (all the people who give Peter Parker a life outside of being Spider-Man)....like Felicia Hardy, Debra Whitman, Harry Osborn, Flash Thompson, Mary Jane Watson, Eddie Brock (in the Ultimate version), etc etc. (seriously, did they just eliminate all reason for Flash Thompson to be in these movies? Given who Flash is nowadays(Agent Venom), that seems SUPER stupid) They've eliminated all pretense for Peter to organically know almost all of his major supporting characters. And what, now all these people are going to work for Oscorp? (Seriously, they made Felicia Hardy - the Black Cat - an Oscorp secretary. WHAT THE HELL?? She's fallen a looooong way from being both an heiress AND having amassed a fortune in stolen goods...) They killed off Gwen, Peter's only pretense for hanging around Oscorp. Harry knows he's Spider-Man, and he knows Harry is the Goblin, so I sure as hell don't think Peter is going to become their coworker now... Also, they eliminated the unique backstories of all those villains - you know, those things which one might build entire movies around. - They eliminated Doctor Connor's family and the fact that he was a victim of the Lizard too. Now he's just a "mad scientist" working for Oscorp. - The Vulture is apparently going to just be an evil version of the Falcon who was given a flight suit by Oscorp, rather than a aging/dying Adrian Toomes who was cheated and had his business destroyed by a scheming business partner (coulda been Oscorp) and now uses his wing suit to get revenge and steal the youth/health from people and avoid death. - Kraven the Hunter will now be some guy hired by Osborn to hunt Spider-Man, I guess? Nope, no longer Sergei Kravinoff, a guy obsessed with trying to hunt the world's most dangerous prey(Spider-Man). - Mysterio will now be a guy with an illusion suit given to him by Oscorp, instead of Quentin Beck - vengeful former magician/stuntman/special effects master who was disgraced by Spider-Man while he was saving the day. - etc For all his cool powers, Spider-Man is supposed to be just one guy in a huge crazy world where he can't predict if/when/where a new threat might arise. Here....oh, yea. Oscorp. Okay. I think that probably covers THAT fundamentally stupid part of this whole series. -------------- DESTINY AND THE DISAPPEARING PARENTS On to another fundamentally stupid thing! Peter's father created the radioactive spider! And it could only work on Peter! Blah blah blah! Destiny! Blah! The ENTIRE POINT of Spider-Man is that he's an accidental everyman superhero. Where other heroes are geniuses who invented their powers (Iron Man), invented the accident that granted their power(Hulk), went out of their way to learn their powers(Batman), was trained by a master to use their powers(Daredevil), was born with their powers (X-Men, Thor), auditioned to get their powers (Captain America), an agent of some force that equips them with their powers and pays them (Hawkeye and Black Widow)...Spider-Man is the one who just kinda accidentally stumbled into it. He's the "IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU TOO!" fantasy. He's not ultra rich. He's not a god. He's not a predestined champion because some convoluted string of events set him up to be. He's just some teen who randomly got powers and now has to figure out how to handle them, and learn what he feels he NEEDS to do with them. The way they handled Uncle Ben in the first movie was idiotic. They robbed Peter of starting out using his powers selfishly only to have Uncle Ben die and impart the "With great power comes great responsibility" belief that is the driving force behind why he must always use his powers to be a hero. They've rendered Spider-Man down to "It was destiny". "A wizard did it." -level hand-waving away of a need to create a plot. "God did it."-level blandness. The entire subplot about Peter's parents should've been totally cut from these movies. This isn't even as cool as their mysterious fates in the comics (they were pre-SHIELD Agents who were killed in the crash of a plane that was sabotaged by one of the Red Skull's assassins). QUESTION: How did Peter's dad get a high tech....subway car science lab in the NYC subway system? Did he build it? If Oscorp built, why didn't Norman raid it for research? Why build it in a subway car at all? Couldn't it just be a more useful lab format? Did it need to roll? Did it need windows? Why would Richard Parker leave his "confession video" in a SECRET lab? Confessions don't really make sense as something to hide in a secret place. Okay. Done with that. --------------

GWEN STACY So, next one. Gwen Stacy MUST die. That's obvious. But it shouldn't have been in this movie. There was setup that needed to happen for that to work properly. The reason Gwen Stacy's death is SO devastating, and SO huge isn't just because she died. It's VERY specifically the circumstances in HOW she died. Spider-Man and the Green Goblin have a long history of battling each other. The Goblin is constantly trying to destroy him or enact some scheme and Spider-Man is constantly foiling his plans. They are long-time bitter enemies with a history. The Goblin is the Joker to Spider-Man's Batman. When the Goblin throws Gwen from the bridge and she dies it's a "OH SHIT, HE WENT TOO FAR THIS TIME" moment. But not ONLY that. The Goblin TORMENTS him about it, because HE didn't kill Gwen - Spider-Man did. The webline that Spider-Man tries to use to saves her snaps taught and breaks her neck before she ever hits the water below. The Goblin hangs this over Spider-Man's head and haunts him with guilt and drives him on an enraged quest for revenge. A quest for revenge that sees the Goblin accidentally impale himself with his own glider. Harry Osborn (who Peter meets in college) witnesses the battle and blames Spider-Man for murdering his father. For TASM2 to have worked the way it was set up, Harry Osborn needed to have been in TASM1 and established and SHOWN early on as Peter's best friend. But he wasn't in it. For Gwen's death to have any of that impact (most hated foe finally going too far) between Spider-Man and the Goblin, Harry killing her would've had to have the weight of a true friend betraying Peter in the absolutely worst way possible. The way it was....it was only slightly worse than if a random guy like Electro had killed her. That she died in the clocktower instead of the bridge is not irrelevant either. In the clock tower she was dead. Spider-Man just couldn't reach her in time. On the bridge it was snapping to a stop on his webline that killed her, and the water below creates the lingering "what if?" of her hitting the water instead. Would she have survived? It lends power to the Goblin's torment that SPIDER-MAN killed Gwen Stacy, not him. Gwen Stacy's death is probably the most horrible major death in comics. In this movie it's kinda just another plot point. ALSO, they went REAL obvious that Gwen was going to die. Like holy crap. If you know anything about Spider-Man's comicbook history it was just "oh, yea, she's toast" from the moment she begins that graduation speech. The way they hammered you with the "life is special" "everyone will die" speech and the "oh no, she might leave!" "oh no, they broke up!" "will they get back together?".....she was toast. I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if some people who DON'T know about Spider-Man picked up on the heavy-handed "SHE'S GONNA DIE!!!" foreshadowing. -------------- GREEN GOBLIN The Goblin being Harry Osborn instead of Norman Osborn eliminates Harry taking over his father's empire and seeking revenge for his father's death, and it eliminates Harry as a supporting character and Peter's best friend just in general for the future. That's kinda dumb, but whatever, I guess. If they had wanted to eliminate the second Goblin from existence, why not just....I dunno....NOT introduce Harry? Why have everything based out of Oscorp if not to have Norman Osborn build his criminal empire with it, and become the Goblin to lead it. The way TASM2 handles it is a weird series of mismatched plots that sort of stumble over each other. Harry Osborn comes out of nowhere. Where has Harry been? Well, his dad shipped him off to boarding school at the age of 10 because he was some kind of massive disappointment…at the age of 10, apparently? And Norman is also pissed that Harry left even though he was the one who sent him away? So, in spite of Harry being a complete failure who is unworthy of his father's love, Norman gives him complete control of Oscorp. Hooray for ALL of the shitty dad clichés at once. Norman Osborn almost never shows up at all, despite being the nefarious villain behind Oscorp and all this nonsense going on. He basically dies off-screen just in time for Harry's illness to set in at a dramatically younger, plot convenient age (like 30 years earlier than his father). Harry happens to instantly go nuts and embrace the taking over and running of a criminal empire/conspiracy he JUST stumbled across. Harry happens across the info suggesting Oscorps super spiders might be a cure (info about secret projects that is cleverly hidden in a folder labelled "SECRET PROJECTS", while the secret projects themselves are in the "SECRET PROJECTS" basement of Oscorp...) Harry assumes Spider-Man must have gotten his powers from those spiders. Harry happens to be friends with Spider-Man. Harry has been in town for just a couple days and is randomly observant enough to notice the tiny footnote saying his old friend Peter took the picture of Spider-Man. Harry assumes Peter MUST know Spider-Man because he can operate a camera (it's the ONLY logical explanation, right? Telephoto lens? What? Nonsense!). Peter refuses to give Harry the blood because....he's afraid it might kill him? But he's dying....and the blood is the only cure? He's afraid that giving Harry his blood might have side effects? Are these side effects worse than death? Oh, I know! It might turn him into a Green Goblin! Wait, yeah! That's totally what happens! Except...no...Norman Osborn had turned green and gobliny before he died too...so that's just the disease. He can't have the cure that will save his life and keep him from turning into a monster because it might kill him or turn him into a monster! Wait.... Harry and Peter could get this "cure" tested, right? If ONLY they had a scientific testing facility that specialized in genetic research... IF ONLY.... Too bad they're having this debate all the way up in the Oscorp tower SOOOO FAR AWAY from any scientific testing facility. Too bad they don't have time to come up with a better thought out plan. Norman had like 30 years to work on this. Apparently Harry only has like 3 days, because....reasons? [Seriously, what even IS this plot? And this is just like two or three scenes...] So eventually Harry finds the deceptively named "SECRET PROJECTS" basement at Oscorp and gets some of the super spider venom! ...and immediately takes it to cure himself. That's logically sound, right? Norman had all of this stuff in the basement, and he never took it because....?????? Harry's conclusion is apparently "because it'll work and I should totally take it". SIDEBAR I'm not happy about this, but whatever. Given everything else they did, this is of relatively minor importance: - Green Goblin's "costume" was stupid...again. ...and pretty much missing the point that the Green Goblin is INSANE and really thinks he IS the Green Goblin. - Also, personalitywise, same deal. This movie he was just angry Harry Osborn. Green Goblin is a criminal mastermind, a genius, and a complete LUNATIC. He is the Marvel Universe's version of The Joker. -------------- ELECTRO Electro's character was a rehashing of Edward Nygma from Batman Forever, except he gains lightning powers instead of...riddle powers. Mind you, he gains his powers by being electrocuted and falling into an inexplicable tank of giant man-eating electric eels....on his birthday. Instead of the striking, yet admittedly ridiculous classic green and yellow Electro costume, they made him look like homeless Doctor Manhattan. I understand not going with the green and yellow suit. It'd look INSANE in a live action movie, but honestly, given the character being portrayed as a rehash of Edward Nygma, maybe more crazy green spandex would've worked out just fine... XD For all of his unoriginality in backstory, Electro's powers were AWESOME. Dude is a PURE walking spectacle of visual badassitude. He was scary crazy powerful. He could've been a fantastic villain in his own right....but no. They went ahead and brought in the suddenly evil Harry to relegate Electro to the role of just being a henchman. Because apparently Electro's not important after all. QUESTION: Why were they torturing the guy MADE OF ELECTRICITY, who FEEDS ON ELECTRICITY, by shocking him? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? -------------- RHINO Paul Giammati must've realized how stupid this movie was, because he went into full-blown crazy Russian pirate mode playing the Rhino. They were wise not to try and do classic Rhino in live action. That guy barely makes sense IN a comic book, and he looks ridiculous just ALL of the time. But the Rhino mech. Man...there are several different ways that thing could've been cool. They chose ALL of them. Unfortunately those different ways DO NOT work when you smash them together. - Power armor Rhino would've been awesome. - Cyborg Rhino would've been awesome. - Giant quadrupedal "tank" with an armored ram would've been cool. - Giant mech would've been badass. But an almost armor, almost mech...thing...that can drop to 4 legs where it is shaped like a literal robotic rhino, or stand up and be a RIDICULOUS, clumsy looking bipedal rhinoceros shaped contraption with a trap door for a tiny crazy Russian pirate's screaming head??? That's what they went with? lolwut? As a character, he should've just cameoed as the villain Spider-Man catches at the beginning, and maybe they break him out and SHOW him the Rhino "mech" during the part where Harry's all "find me 6 dudes, let's start with this one". --------------
@ieyke
@ieyke 5 жыл бұрын
TONE The tone in this movie is just ALL over the place. - Hilarious, action packed chase of crazy Russian pirate Paul Giamatti! - Sad grim news that Peter's old friend's dad just died... - Goofy, underappreciated, and ignored, the zany dysfunctional engineer Max Dillon is Spider-Man's weird obsessed fan! - Pete and Gwen are in love! - Electro hates the world and hates being forgotten! - Harry and Peter are buddys! - Peter had to break up with Gwen for the umpteenth time because he's haunted by her dad! - Gwen is leaving to go to school in England! - Harry needs Spider-Man's blood and Spider-Man won't give it too him, so he goes all ragey and then embraces the darkside! - Peter and Gwen seem to still be doing pretty swell after all. - BIG CRAZY SHOWDOWN WITH ELECTRO! - GREEN GOBLIN KILLS GWEN! - Sad funeral. Sad graveside montage. - MORE WACKY RUSSIAN PIRATE! BUT THIS TIME WITH A BIG HILARIOUS ROBOT SUIT! -------------- THE ENDING They utterly FAIL at this. Look what happened in this movie! GWEN STACY DIED! It wasn't remotely close to what it should've been, but it was still well executed for what it was....and then they had the epic, and devastating funeral/graveside montage. THAT is where this movie should've ended. Fading from one graveside vist to the next, and then to black. Roll credits. Cue sad Spider-Man music. But no. No no no. They had to tack on another scene of Spider-Man battling our favorite crazy Russian pirate in a giant hilarious rhino-shaped robot armor. -------------- THE GOOD Spider-Man himself was far and away the best Spider-Man has been in any of the movies. Best webslinging in any of the movies. Seriously great stuff. Especially in that first chase trying to catch the Rhino and the stolen Uranium or whatever. Best Spider-Man costume in any of the movies. Seriously just NAILED IT. Everything about Peter and Gwen together/fighting/whatever was great. Gwen is actually a better character in these movies than in the comics. Peter and Harry hanging out again for the first time was a great scene. For what it was, and what it had to work with in this mess of a film, Gwen's death was well done. Gwen's funeral/graveside montage was perfect. Battles with Electro were just AWESOME."

It all comes down to your own ideology. I’m more willing to accept good plot while forgiving marred and stained with extreme lows over accepting inoffensive mediocre plot while forgiving tepid lows. The inoffensive safe nature of the first two OG films easily allows for rose tinted nostalgia goggles, as the movies, in broad strokes, simply do the trick. As terrible as all the crammed in elements are in Amazing 2, the goods are actually great. Which ever ideology you have isn’t even necessarily right. It’s all opinion. Just a cool new movie series i wanted to tell you guys i thibk sounds so cool to cover. 80s action movies. Since it is a very definitive genre within all action movies and so iconic itd be cool to see everyones opinion. You guys could even make your selected list cover all the major actors in that decade and only one film from.a franchise. Meaning Arnold could be Terminator 1 and Predator or Commando. Russel Escape from NY or Roadhouse. Stallones got Rambos and Rockys. Wilis with Die hard. And theres still Steven Segal "im just a cook lol had to give that one a shootout to u guys" Norris, Gibson with Lethal Weapon. Van Damme etc

I respect this ranking almost as much as I think it’s insane. I appreciate that they aren’t being swayed by the commenters so intensely disagreeing with them. They 100% knew people would hate on them for making TASM2 number one but they did it anyway because it’s what they really believe. That said, man... y’all must be drunk. Spider-Man 2 has an actual story. It has real character complexity and a MUCH better villain. It isn’t just a trailer for a bunch of movies that never came to be. I could see preferring this to Spider-Man 1 but even that’s a stretch to me

the guy Andy is talking about at 18:36 kinda looks like if Zachary Quinto and Jason Schwartzman had a baby together

Chris Cordova I've been thinking about this comparison since the first time I saw this movie, so when Andy said "guy who work at Oscorp" I knew exactly who he was talking about.

Alright I’ve gone long enough in this review series, I gotta ask, why is Kevin always wearing sunglasses in these videos? No hate just pure curiosity.

I tweeted Tim that the next in review should be the Rocky movies leading up to Creed 2.... Am I alone on this? Lol

After watching these movies again, I think my list would be the same as Gregs. I also agree with what Nick said about Venom. I think its going to be number 1, I mean If I had to judge it on the trailers alone it would be number 3.
