The impression I got from these films is that they were trying to portray Peter as more of an introvert rather than a full blown nerd; he's the guy eating the cake at the corner of the room whilst everyone else is dancing and socialising. He's the guy who skateboards in an isolated dock where no one else is around. I don't know if I'd call that faithful to who Peter Parker is but to me it explains why he's portrayed the way he is.
@bobbybrown22914 жыл бұрын
The Raimi Series aimed for a 60s comic feel, whereas this aims for a more modern (at the time) feel for Spider-Man, more like the Ultimate Comics Universe. In those, Peter had a shorter temper and came off more as a loner, rather than a more reserved and nerdy nice guy who was raised by saints. Neither approach is wrong, they're just such polar opposites that they've divided the fans.

My one issue with this movie is that there's just something missing, that would otherwise make it a great spiderman movie. I can't exacly tip my finger on it, but I think it has to do with the structure of the story. The story is trying to go into TOO many sub plots, that don't really end up going anywhere. It's like the movie couldn't properly decide what type of Spiderman story it wanted to be, which the Raimi and MCU Spidey for example do know what they want to be. In my opinion, it tried to hard to capture what made the Raimi films good, while also trying to do too much differently to justify it's existence. Otherwise, I really enjoy this movie

Garfield is a great actor and undeniably charismatic....but that's the problem. Garfield and Stone are beautiful people and virtually perfect as characters. I respond more to flawed protagonists. I've never gone into a Spider-man movie wanting to BE Spider-man, just wanting to be engaged by interesting characters and stories. Peter Parker in this movie never struggles with ordinary problems which is core to every Spider-man story I've seen in film, animation or print. In TASM2 it feels lke the writers try to overcorrect this, and it feels phoney.

He never struggles with problems? He's abandoned by his parents then finds out they were killed in a plane crash. Then sees his uncle who raised him killed in front of him. Its clear he already had some built up anger issues from his parents missing hence why he took it out on Flash and Ben. But then he goes on a revenge quest to find the killer, and never does. Gives the only guy who was close to his parents an equation that turns him into a super villain. Then watches hes girlfriends dad die. And ALL of this happened while he was still in 11th or 12th grade. What other Spiderman film other than Spiderman 2 could possibly come close to the problems Andrew had?
@soos87854 жыл бұрын
When he says ' I want to be that Spider-Man' is all spidey. When I was a kid I also saw spidey swing and be quirky, and I wanted to be that cause who wouldn't? Garfield nails that cause Spidey is to be a really entertaining guy. Andrew and Emma just got dealt a shit hand, and it's a shame we never saw how good they could have been. Plus your wrong about him not having ordinary issues, CAUSE HE DID.

This episode of First Viewing is actually the best, one of you loves TASM, the other one hates it. And when you give your points of views, I understand both of you and I agree with both of you, because you both make valid points and have actual reasons to hate/love this movie.

I think what’s missing in this movie for some people is nostalgia. I didn’t grow up watching the Raimi movies, I honestly don’t even think that I’ve seen one of them to completion, but I watched the Webb films in theaters with my dad so they have a special place in my heart. Also I think the camera scene would’ve worked a lot better if it said property of the high school instead of property of Peter Parker. You would think that would’ve crossed their minds at some point.

7:13-7:24. In this timeframe I think you bring it on to two factors. That’s what a lot of people felt when this movie came out. The shadow of the first films just over this movie. So it had to take so many creative liberties however as the years have gone on. They’ve had to evolve. They’ve had some breathing room and they finally have that shadow off of the Spider-Man brand. And it’s not a bad film. Just not great or amazing ( ah pun) enough to get the away from the shadow of the dump that spider man 3 had on the public. They decided to embrace their silliness in that movie and the people, when the spider man series had been shown to a lot of kids grown up at that point saw it.... it blew up in their face, and so I think this movie gets a lot of the backslash. Do I think it’s a perfect movie. No.... and the movie after. Hell no.... but I do think that if this was the first spider man movie made before the original spider man movie series. It might not have had such backlash.

Still my favorite live action Spiderman movie. The Amazing Spiderman 2 has lots of problems but I think it's a little underrated (and at least it's better than Spiderman 3)
@GManJR754 жыл бұрын
I agree. Amazing Spier-Man 2 suffered from major studio involvement and bad editing. I mean there was A LOT cut out of that movie that would've made it so much better. Even scenes that were featured heavily in the trailers and commercials were removed entirely. Even Mary Jane was supposed to be in the movie, being played by Shailene Woodley. But ended up being cut out of the movie entirely even with all her scenes shot. But it does have a lot of great things like the suit looks great, the swinging scenes are awesome, and Peter and Gwen being too damn cute thus making the ending all the more sad and tragic.
@videogamehunter8204 жыл бұрын
@@GManJR75 Right on. The Webb movies had great characters with an less than amazing story while the Raimi movies had a good story (repeated as it was) with awful characters. For me, I think having good characters in a movie is more important than having a solid story. That's why I like the Amazing series more. And at least that TASM2 had the balls to kill off an important, likable character in a tragic way. Spiderman 3 killed Harry but he spent a large chunk of the movie with amnesia so it wasn't as impactful in my eyes. I enjoy the Raimi movies but it was the same, safe formula in each movie. Peter struggles with being Spiderman, he's in an on again off again relationship with Mary Jane, a supervillain comes up that has a connection to Peter, Peter's friendship with Harry is tested, Mary Jane gets kidnapped, Spiderman rescues her, a villain turns back to the good side by the end, and the villain does themself in. I wish the studio stayed out of TASM2. Then we could have gotten the ending to the trilogy.

@@GManJR75 Yep, Avi Arad got onto Webb's back with tons of forced sequel bait and whatnot. Like originally TASM2 was just about the Gwen and Goblin stuff and also Peter's parents stuff finally being resolved. Then Arad said "too boring add Electro". Then he said "lol, add setup for Sinister Six". That said, I am glad they didn't use the original ending where Peter's dad was alive and HE used the "Great Power, Great Responsibility" line. That was trying way too hard to copy Dark Knight Rises.

Andrew Garfield is a perfectly good Spidey, apart from the age and the fact that he's the kind of guy Peter Parker would KILL to be. Great chemistry with Emma Stone, the city of New York feels like more of a character than in the Raimi films, and it has characters you care about as well as that wonderful Stan Lee cameo. BUT, Sony is obviously too aware of the previous films, and so the film tries hard to find its own identity while often recreating scenes from those earlier movies. Also, what exactly is this movie about...the Lizard turning New York into, uh, lizard-men?
