Honestly this channel is amazing. Like an Asian Historia Civilis. The topic itself it's interesting, but the guy has some really good story telling skills and art and can turn a ordinary topic into something incredible. Seriously he's so gifted! Also it's nice to see a realistic lessons on Japan rather than people in the west insisting it's perfect and never did anything wrong. I wish he would make like an 80 hour podcast like Mike Duncan's History of Rome, about Japan. That way we could see every Dynasty and Technological wave in Japan from its early starting history to its modern day or something.

Many, many years ago (10+ years ago, I think), way before the mega-drought, at a farmer's market in Palo Alto, I ran across the most delicious organic olive oil I've ever had. It was smooth and spicy and didn't just taste like olive-flavored vegetable oil. It came in a glass ewer that I brought with me all the way back east and was amazing. I've never been able to find it since. I also tasted authentic Afghan food, which was delicious. They even had romanesco broccoli. I've always wanted to go back there. Farmer's markets are dope.

Japanese villagers living in isolation and being self-sufficient *is* rather implausible. Even during the age of the HunTer Gatherers, their life style limiting the family/clan group, this didn't mean they wouldn't meet on 'yearmarkets' once or twice a year. The various small groups of hunter gatherers could trade stuff from local non-hunter gatherers and they could improve their genepool by marrying new blood they met on these yearmarkets. That's not my own invention though, I saw the concept in the movie "The Clan of the Cavebear." The audience often get the wrong idea because when we watch a movie about hunter gatherers, they're always out hunting and gathering. But who's to say that's all they did month after month, season after season? A rather big misconception thanks to the movies is that British frontsoldiers would spent months in their trenches. Not true. German frontsoldiers did live permanently in their trenches but then they had underground shelters, lodgings, kitchens, etc. British frontsoldiers were only moved to the front in anticipation of an attack, be it from their side or the other. So they would only remain in those trenches one or two weeks I guess. British trenches did not have permanent shelters, only for the commanding officers... So unless the British wanted a mutiny every month or so, high command would make sure that not the same soldiers would have to stay in the trenches for any prolonged period of time.

Hmm. nice vid. The establishment of Dojima Rice exchange in Osaka, effectively created a rice futures market. This cascaded into the creation of rice merchant houses becoming banking houses (loans, tax payments, withdrawals, deposits, etc), which eventually led to formation of decentralization of micro-home-industries across the country, with local domain currencies circulating as well by the time of the black ships. Basically Japan already had a highly capital intensive market economy, by the time of the Meiji restoration. Such that within 15 years, The bank of Japan was established, and by 1897 Japan joined the gold standard.

Another hilarious but informative video, thank you! Also, my guess for the RPG class was mercenary, which isn't too far off of a merchant. Yeah, this is pretty relatable since markets are such a cornerstone of human society. But several times a month!!! I think we only had 2 a year historically, well, 2 big ones, probably a couple smaller ones inbetween. And as you said, while the dough is nice and all, markets fill other purposes as well. Like preventing the Alabama-stereotype.

At first, I thought the RPG job you were talking about was a merchant/peddler but after talking about gossiping while shopping I started thinking it was going to be a information broker. Basically, I thought it would a profession where they bought and sold info like which areas have the cheapest goods at the time, which areas/people were willing to pay more for certain goods, and/or what the price of goods are in the town so that a traveling merchant can avoid being ripped off when selling their wares.
