The Ambusher: A ranged Fighter/Rogue Multi-Class Build | D&D 5E | The Dungeon

I'll share an ambusher build that's different from the typical fighter gloomstalker assassin. this will still be ranged but will be using spells. level 10 theorycraft as usual: "Scorched assassin" fighter 2, wild sorc 5, assassin 3 bugbear asi: shadowtouched-cha fighting style: superior technique-ambush metamagic: transmute spell, subtle spell key spells: minor illusion, scorching ray, mind sliver, invisibility DMs notes: works much better if the DM isn't anti-surprise role: burst striker tactics: pre-combat: cast invisibility. convert spare 1st level slots/sorc points into 2nd level slots. tides of chaos initiative. use ambush if necessary. 1st turn: action: upcasted scorching ray at advantage (resets tides of chaos) action surge: upcasted scorching ray at advantage bonus action: cunning action-dash away or hide if possible 2nd turn onwards: action: minor illusion/mind sliver bonus action: cunning action-hide in your illusion so you're undetectable so very straightforward build. here's the average dmg report on round 1 assuming no surprise: 16d6 (SR) + 16d6 (BB)= 112 if surprise is achieved: 32d6 (SR) + 32d6 (BB)= 224 if with surprise, every monster near this party's CR would get one-shot. if i suspected fire resistance/immunity though, i'd use transmute spell.

While you're obviously not as entertaining as other build/info channels (which really shouldn't be the main point anyway!), that doesn't matter at all. Ya, I did a video before using Ranger instead of fighter, and gloomstalker is just a great subclass. I like Horizon Walker too, but I think GS is my favorite.

Crit fishing is an unusually INeffective and expensive play style, and this build demonstrates just why. You're investing three character levels *AND*a feat here, which means you're giving up TWO DICE of Sneak Attack damage, in exchange

for a 10% critical chance and an extra attack once per short rest. This is a TERRIBLE idea and a terrible build.

It's a lot higher than 10% crit chance. You're rolling 3d20 on your attacks, with a 10% on each of those. You're actually around 27% chance of critting, and you can use action surge to set up sneak attacks on other ppls turn by readying the extra action. Doing that a couple times a day (which seems reasonable since you just need 1 short rest in a day for that to happen) adds a lot of damage. Anyways, sorry you didn't like the build; a viewer specifically requested a ranged rogue build and I thought I'd try something different than the usual hand crossbow with Gloomstalker and Assassin build.

i think for this build i agree. crit fishing is only effective if you have a great spike option (divine smite, eldritch smite, sneak attack) and that spike option is of sufficient enough dmg dice.

Rogue assassin and fighter arcane archer is a much stronger build in my opinion. I personally enjoy anything with a bow and that's my favorite multi class

Very good suggestion. Arcane Archer is very good, but IMO it's better with more Fighter (esp 7 for grasping arrow). Nothing wrong with that though. BM is also a pretty good option.
