In the Germans trying to identify a Mithchell.... saying a Mitchell flying from Italy couldn't happen. My dad flew the B-25 as a Squadron leader out of Corsica. And he flew all the time, over the Alps into Germany., Hungary, France, the Balkans. And did bombings in the Alps itself. To take out bridges. Blocking supplies into Italy.

@@boris7797 Nope. Mitchells were Lendleased to Russia. P61s were probably not. The Mitchell could be fitted with an amazing number of forward firing machine guns and cannons. If germans were calling it a fighter, it was a fighter.

Obviously they are referring to the twin engine P38 fighter by Lockheed, not Mitchell. Mitchell was was the name given to the B25 made by north american. It was twin engine bomber they named it the Mitchell after the famous aviator general Billy Mitchell. The B25 was superior to nothing much. However the P38 was, top USA ace flew it. Richard Bong

An Australian RAF Mitchell was ordered to attack the Japanese on the Nth coast of New Guinea. He took on 5 I believe it was Zeros, he shot down more than one. A Japanese pilot was trying to get him recognised for his bravery and his ability to use a twin engine bomber in the role of a fighter. Yes, he was shot down and the crew never heard from. If not for the Japanese pilot who took part in shooting down the Mitchell nothing would ever have been known about the battle that day in the skies above New Guinea.

The B-25 was an excellent medium bomber used with great success in the Mediterranean, CBI, and Far East theaters. It was at least the equal of any British medium bomber except the Mosquito, and in some ways was better than the B-26. The P-38 was a good fighter but was most successful in the warmer climates of the CBI and the Far East.
@captainaxle438
@captainaxle438 17 күн бұрын
@@patrickmiano7901 ha ha ha B25 was simply a truck. Lessor pilots were assigned it. Slow and easy to fly. The only place it shined was in the Pacific with forward firing canons it was deadly against the many small vessels the Japanese navy used in the islands. And this was because it operated in air superiority areas with fighter escort. The better pilots went to the fighters and the heavy bombers. B25 was superior to not much, just like a Sherman tank. Only way better than B26 was it's easier to fly. The B26's have a true impressive mission history in Europe. That's why they made the B26 the B25 was nearly obsolete mid war

I wonder what model of BF-109 this is. Along with the two gun ports on the nose, does it have a cannon through the spinner hub? And are those single gun ports on the wings?

Emil - model E BF109. This was the main variant used in WW II up to around mid-1941 when the model F became available. The E model is the last which had this conical propeller hub, and still had the strut at the elevators in back. This E model was a step up in engine power from the earlier fighter plane models. The F model lost the strut on the elevator at the aft of the aircraft and in the change upgraded engine power. Each of these had progressively noticeably more powerful engines and related structural changes to allow these to be mounted and operated. Model F abandoned the wing cannons and had a rounded propeller hub, the guns were all focused around the fuselage. There were very substantial changes once it went up to the G model. the BF109 after model C-1 (up to and including the E, but not G forward) had two spots in the wings which could house a MG 17 machine gun or a 20 mm MG FF or similar cannon. This aircraft was a very capable fighter aircraft and allied pilots learned to have plenty of respect for what this machine could do it it hit you.

@@oceanhome2023 I understand the ME 109E always had the barrel tube through the hub like this, and often it had the cannon installed which ends near the feet of the pilot, but sometimes, rarely, they did not have a center hub cannon. I think that was somewhat rare. Some may have had option for more than one size of cannon. There were many of these aircraft made, and probably with many configurations

The DO 217 and the Mitchell B25 BOTH have the overhang of the engine nacelle (there is a small back section which juts beyond the back of the wing). So, this basis of identification is really super dumb. The DO 217 has a thinner, longer rear fuselage, and smaller dual tail/rudder assembly. At a distance the two would be very hard to detect from one another. This discussion sounds sort of fake or artificially made up, like it is NOT from actual pilots with actual WW II warfare experience. One way I detect this stuff is to listen for technical details of the operation of the aircraft equipment themselves. Often there are idiosyncrasies of each aircraft, which would indicate the pilot actually did fly that aircraft.

Lots of old time German people in America right from the earliest days. They in fact developed the Kentucky Long Rifle that Daniel Boone used and the Revolution sniper group Morgan's Riflemen. The special forces of the American Revolution. America never hated the German people after all so many of us are originally German. We hated Hitler and all he stood for. The German people were taken in by his propaganda and rhetoric. I personally knew a very smart and kind Luftwaffe pilot that was originally a bomber pilot and forced to fly fighters who came to the USA after the war.
