We do this too haha! We're a family of 7 + one on the way and I can agree that 1000s of onions are necessary to go a full year. We have a planter that is nearly identical that my husband made for planting our garlic too! The only difference is I can come in and take a nice hot shower after and run my dishwasher to make my life easier in other areas ;-)

Love the way they keep things so simple!! Beats the whole fast paced lifestyle these days. I can certainly see some cons of doing things the old way! But I can definitely still appreciate the old school approach tho!! Builds character! 💪🏼💪🏼

As a kid, I worked for a couple different farmers. We crawled on our hands and knees to harvest green onions, radishes and carrots. The was in the muck farms in Stark County, OH, just north of where you grew up. And, at home, we planted our whole garden by hand. Thank goodness it wasn’t on the same scale as your family.

I have RA so don't garden like I used to. I grew green onions in containers right outside my back door which is beside the driveway. I used to plant a couple of containers of green onions each year. I'd let a couple of plants go to seed to keep for planting the following year. I no longer have to do this though because many years ago some green onions took hold in the thin little cement crack between the driveway and cement stairs going up to my back door. Some seeds must've been blown there. It comes back bigger each year and grows wonderfully. Hey, it works for me.

I think it's cool how the Amish provide survives to the community. Idk if all Amish groups do that but a lady I saw on social media said she hired the Amish to build her a barn and the Amish people who built it for her were so nice and attentive. That's amazing. I also think kids in our public school could benefit from learning things like what you showed in the video.

I can arrest to lots of benefits from gardening like this, but on a much smaller scale for just 2 of us now. It creates relationship with the soil and the plants in a way machinery does not.

We are only a family of 4 now so 250-300 bulbing onions is my yearly planting goal. Planting is the easiest part. 😊

I have four 72' onion rows planted every 6-8 inches.. Haven't counted them but the quick math says about 140 per row.. Somewhere about 560 by hand

It sure is hard getting it out of your blood no matter how hard it was! It doesn't matter if you were raised Amish or English.

Planting onions or any plant this way is labor intensive yet makes them extremely aware of the soil and plant health. How kany famioy members depend on this garden space, surely not just your mother?

I have a question, nothing to do with onions lol. Where I live, the Amish do not put gutters on their houses. Do you know why that is?
