When you’re sick or in pain and you need a doctor quickly you probably don’t stop to check rates for how much an ambulance ride to the nearest hospital will cost you.

Moral of the story: Unless you can't breathe, was seriously injured like shot or stabbed, don't call for an ambulance. Instead, call for an uber/lyft...

Any medical service provider charges and bills for medical treatment including tax funded hospitals. Fire service does not bill for the fire truck coming to your house 3 times for your smoke detector going off.

I had an injury right across the street from a hospital and I had no choice but to be transported via ambulance and the bill was $987.

20 years ago I was in a motorcycle wreck, single vehicle no one else involved, just going too fast on rainy road. No cops called, I didn't want an ambulance because of the potential costs. Called wife to drive me to ER. Broken collar bone and 3 ribs. No surprise ambulance bill.

It sounds like people with Medicare might also have issues. That is majority of seniors in the state of Texas.

I used an ambulance in 2021 for about a 3 mile run after suffering a stroke. It was about $200 out of pocket and as I recall about $900 total in Michigan.

Yeah, it's insane. I had a co-worker who refused to take an ambulance during a heat stroke but we had to bring it to him anyways. It also depends on how many red lights there are, they add on a ton of charges if they have to go through red lights

When the No Surprises Act was passed in 2019 they tried to include ambulances. But the ambulance business space is so fragmented and intentionally obfuscated that legislators gave up and ran out of time, unable to come to a solution. So much so, that AIR ambulances are covered, but regular ones aren't.

This is why instead of transferring my son to the children's hospital in an ambulance, we decides to drive him ourselves. Crazy that ambulances are free in other countries

@MoonRavenn, how can I find out about surprise ambulance bills, and how can I prevent them from happening? Just for future reference, what do I do if I have received a surprise ambulance bill, that I cannot afford to pay, and that insurance won't cover it? I am in Tennessee.

I suppose that they have to pay the salaries and medical items used n possibly the largest part is the cost of the truck itself! My moms retirement apartments had to buy a new mini van seats 12 78,000$ n that was 2 yrs ago Bet it would be more now. Although, if you are close enough there should be common sense.

He needs to read his insurance guidelines, if it’s out of network and it was an emergency the insurance should pay as an in-network provider, he can also appeal with his insurance.

So these thieving ambulances still get paid outrageous amounts by the insurance companies, just not by the patient? Premiums will just go up so the insurance companies can maintain their margins and everyone loses money anyway. That's not a win.
